Odd Grand Prix Variation - Any information?
on: November 22, 2025, 06:51:50 PM
A quarter century ago, when they had just stopped making these, I would buy them on ebay for $5-$30 each (thank you TSA for stealing so many for me).  This is one I remember at the time was weird but I had forgotten about it until I went through the batch.

I have 20+ Grand Prix knives and a few of the thinner Automobile version.  I was given one that my grandfather found in his business shop back in the early 80s and as my brother and I joke "we'd rather lose a finger" than give up our favorite SAKs.  So a Grand Prix has been in my pocket for a very very long time.

Has anyone seen one like this?

Anytime I see the back Victorinox shield, etc. and the other side blank, I assume there used to be a logo or company name on the other.  Since removed.  I have several (not that model) with the back shields.  Most have had the advertisement panel removed.  Best wishes.  G

That was my first thought but I see no evidence a logo was ever there.  If so, it was very cleanly removed.

I've seen other SAKs with the logo and those variants show up on other web sites and usually pop up on ebay.

I had just never seen this version like that anywhere before or since.

Possible the advertising logo simply wore off, as they were commonly screen printed.

Another possibility is that the front scale was intended to get a logo, but for whatever reason, never did.

I've removed the advertising from a from a couple knives. If you polish the scales after sanding you can't tell anything was ever done.

I guess I find it surprising that they must have run a whole batch of special/custom scales with the car inlaid on the back and I can't find a reference to it.

Usually a company is going to run a batch numbering in the hundreds if not thousands, otherwise it's just prohibitive.

I figured more would have been spotted.  Looking on the web and the lists of variations here and there, I have never seen another one.

From reading through SAKWiki I know Victorinox has done quite a few runs of only 50 knives. I know I saw one run of 35 mentioned and I think I once read of a run of 10. I could see a car company commissioning a small run these for a few select people. If it was less than 50 it's possible very few have made it the secondary market. Regardless of where it came from it's a beautiful and unique addition to your collection.

Wow - Never seen that before - ie the inlay on the reverse side .... Nice  ..... But agree w comments ....
And possibly whole scale was replaced .... hmmm .... but then you'd have the regular shield I guess

PS. And lucky you - 20 Grand Prix s   .... I love the inlays - especially that one!!

So I was looking at this knife again and just happened to set it down next to my other one that I carry everyday and never realized the car on this one is definitely smaller.

So they not only made a run of oddball scales but they had to make a bunch of smaller sized metal antique car inlays.

Very interesting! That’s what makes SAK collecting so interesting (and eventually  frustrating) -  you may think you have them all (or at least being aware of all variations of certain item) and suddenly you learn about smaller reverse inlay! And the search starts again  (which is of course the fun part of it 😀). I am lucky in this case - not collecting Grand Prixes.
