SwissTool Adventures , Episode Three
on: February 21, 2009, 04:04:05 PM
Continuing on from this thread http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,2386.0.html

Heres part Three...........

SWISSTOOL THE HAMMER

Thursday night I found myself on exercise with the lifeboat doing search patterns in the dark .It was a really dark night too and we had to rely on the GPS/Chartplotter to guide us through the sea defence reefs .The launch went smoothly and once clear of the bay and reefs we put our radio call into the coastguard to advise them of our exercise , duration and crew onboard .Once underway we noticed the compass on the helm position had no light to illuminate it . This wasn't the end of the world as we had the chartplotter but it made things very difficult as we couldn't just tell the Helmsman a course to steer and really made the point of our exercise difficult . So the first thing we did was to check the wiring and fuse . To do this we needed to unscrew and remove an inspection cover but it wouldn't budge . No matter how hard we tried it wouldn't budge  :( So I grabbed the trusty Swisstool and used it as a hammer to knock the inspection cover in an aniticlockwise direction . I must have hit it hard about 9 or 10 times before it budged  :D
Well we looked inside with a torch but were unable to see anything wrong  ::)
In the end the problem was solved by picking up another crew member  ( now 4 in total ) and held a torch on the compass so the relevent bearing could be passed to helm .

It was as great night and was quite exciting speeding along in total darkness .
Most important though was no swisstools were hurt in the making of this thread .

Heres a pic of the inspection cover

I took these two pics when we got back . You can clearly see the track the boat made and the search pattern we did . You can also see the 9 reefs which we passed through and had to make sure we didn't run into them while doing the exercise . They are huge but were invisible in the dark .The plotter is in night mode hence the strange colours .

Reefs in daylight

Good work Duncan, SwissTool to the rescue again! :)  Did anyone ever admit to being the gorilla that over-tightened the access cover? ::)
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

:-\  Dunc gets to use his MTs adventuring on the darkened waters.  Me, I get to pull a bit of plastic out of the kitchen sink's plug hole.   Not quite the same :)

I suppose I could make up some tall tale of polar bear ambush in the local woods  :D

Nicely done Dunc

If I had one then it would have been my first choice  :D

I will just say that on the boat if I didn't have my Swisstool I would have used my Sebenza as that was close by too  ;)

I have used my beater EDC SURGE as a hammer numerous times; it works flawlessly!  :D I have also tied some 550 cord to the SURGE's lanyard ring and thrown it over a high branch!
