Ode to the Leatherman S2 !
on: February 22, 2009, 12:05:54 AM
Just got one , gotta say I'm very impressed with it . The Fenix electronics are well proven , build quality and the proprietary metal work is very nice .The light levels and user interface are nice and simple , got the features I need without a lot of stuff I'll never use . The pocket clip and lanyard arrangement are well done and strong . I don't see any reason why anyone would want the S1. The stainless bezel makes for a comfortable hand feel , and rugged front end .

I'm gonna try it with Eneloops , and Lithium AAA's .

I would like to see a two cell /penlite version of the S2 , not for reasons of greater brightness , more for longer runtime and better tasklight ergonomics . I hope they also make an AA version , in order to tap that source of readily available batteries .

Chris

I finally picked up an S2 myself, and I am pleasantly surprised.  I was killing some time at MEC and saw them and decided to grab it to get my mind off some of the BS we are currently putting up with at the freaking bank.

Most of what you said I would agree with- for some reason I thought it was a plastic body, so I was pleasantly surprised at the metal.  It's a little thinner in the body than I normally like, but on par with most other AAA lights I have so nothing I can really complain about.  The switch is nice and solid feeling, which I also like.

What I don't like is the same issue I have with the Streamlight Twin Task series, where the mode alternates when turned off.  This means that the light comes on at the lower level when the button is clicked, then when clicked again it turns off, then the next time it's turned on it's in high mode.  I like to know what mode the light is going to come on at, without having to try and remember whether I fried my retinas last time.

Other than that it's quite nice, and if you don't mind that kind of interface (someone must like it since so many lights are set up that way) then this might just be the light for you.  For me however, this one is probably going to be kept in my laptop bag or glove compartment as a back up light, which is something that still see's a lot of use with me!

Can you do the half press like fenix to switch mode? and wait a few seconds for the mode memory to reset? If it's really like what you described it's an automatic no go for me.

I'm still very pleased with mine , glad you like yours . I gotta admit I think off AAA's as backup lites mostly . They are a tad too slim for my large mitts .I find the S2 is a very nice shirt pocket carry . The Leatherman split arrow clip just looks like another pen . I'll probably end up getting an S3 for more primary carry .

It seems I was wrong.  Clicking it once turns it on low, then turning it off then on again turns it on high.  But, if you have it on low, then turn it off and don't turn it back on right away, it seems to reset, so it will turn on low again.  So, unless you turn it on low and turn it off, then immediately turn it on again.

This is a much better set up than the Twin Task, and makes the S2 significantly more acceptable than I thought.

So it's basically same as regular feinx UI then. If it's a momentary switch you can just tap and click on to go directly to high.

I've been carrying one for a month or so now.  I love it and I'm not just saying that because I sell them.  At first I thought I would want to carry the S3 but after using them all I fell in love with the small size of the S2.  Everyone I show it to is very impressed with the little thing.

For general EDC ( Ie: non tactical ) tasks , its all you need . I'll probably get a second one , as a backup/spare battery carrier . I'll prolly stick with my Surefire E1B in applications where I need uber throw .

Hmm, I'm feeling the pressure to get one now. Mainly because there's a void in-between the S1 and S3 on the shelf here.......

I used to come here a lot.

House is hunted, targeted, aimed... waiting for the bank to show up with the damned bullets.

I was at MEC today eyeballing the S2.  It looks better in person than it does in the pics.

I already have a Fenix L0D Q4, so not sure how much value the S2 would really give me other than a clicky versus twist switch.

Black Rose , I think you'll come to prefer the clickie . The stainless bezel gives a better hand feel , and ruggedness . The clip and lanyard system is very nice too .
