Old leather working tools I've got since 30 years
on: January 26, 2026, 10:39:12 AM
Good morning (10.32 AM here :D )

I've got a few Leather working tools, which came from my wife's family. Her Great Grandfather was a Leather Worker (probably for the farm, horses, cows, whatever).

A few of them are stamped "Blanchard - Paris", and if I can guess, for some tools, what they are made for, for fome other, I don't know at all ;)

Anyway, here is the tools, maybe that could be nice for you Leather workers, to see that, as it's some very old tools, for some of them at least :)

Edit : I have asked ChatGPT about some of the tools, it seems that they are pretty old. End of 19 century / early 20 (between 1875 / 1905 for one of them, which seems to be an edging / folding plier.

Well, it's some archeology :D

Oh nice! I learned my basics in leather craft all so I could make a special sheath, but they don’t make tools like they used to!

Oh I'd like to know hown to work with leather. I saw some videos on youtube, but... well, I guess I should buy a piece of leather, take a random knife from my collection, and try to make a sheath.

After all, I already have some tools

Morning, well, it should be like after noon on your side of the pond, yeah getting a piece of leather would help start your project, that and string, not thread, wherever you get the leather should have what you need, but the best thing to do is just try it out, get a feel for the tools, and work your way up, don’t just try to make a sheath, start more basic, something simple, like a keychain flap, or a belt, it’s more to get the feel and idea of how to work the tools, then work your way up, here’s a pic of my work, I soo wanted a dual carry like the leatherman on the top, but I got that monster of a flashlight on the left and they made nothing that would fit it, thus I started with that fabric one on the left then moved into leather, that first one is the first thing I made, then after I got the hang of it I moved to the center one, I made it like what they call a pancake holster, it was perfect for what I wanted, one of the tools you have, the one above the hole punches with the long but narrow opening would have been perfect for making the belt slots, I had to use a knife to cut what you see, thus why they ain’t cut that good, but leather work can be interesting, it can also be stressful depending how things go! But pick up a piece, a leather store should have some very nice cuts, and in order to get them they should have a bin full of scraps for cheap, start there, find a few good pieces, not to thick, and give it a go, then just work your way up! We have a few members on here that do leather craft, so don’t be afraid to ask, that’s the unique thing about this forum, just ask, either someone on here knows, or someone will search in order to find an answer, just ask,,

Leather strings are called lace, and I wouldn't start there.  I always used saddle maker's thread (linen).  Might not be able to get it anymore.  First project might be to just make a slip for a knife.  No snaps or flaps.  Just a little leather pocket.  Make a pattern for it out of paper and see if the knife is going to fit.  Don't just start cutting.  You don't need a sewing machine for something simple.  You can find instructions on how to punch holes and sew with two needles or a stitching awl.  Eventually you will need to learn how to set snaps and get the tools for that.  A lot of the tools you already have are made for horse tack, reins, tugs, etc. and you won't be able to get much good out of them.
Best wishes.  G

Wise advice, thank you  :hatsoff:

Yes, you'r right, the tools I've got from my wife's family, won't help me for a leather sheath for a tool.

For more information, the great grand-father of my wife was  a farrier (hope it's the right word :D ).

In older times, it probably wouldn't have been unusual for a farrier (horse shoer) to carry around tools to repair some harness.  I have seen farriers cut pads to go under a shoe for a horse with some foot damage.  There were probably incidents of 'horse doctoring', mending saddles that were rubbing a spot sore, lancing boils, and who knows what else.  An old timer learns a lot about horses when he works with them every day.  Best wishes.  G
