Anyone else partake in this pastime?  I will admit I got dragged into this pit by a friend a few months ago.  Many, many years ago I played a bit in a workplace lunchtime league but never to any great skill or success.  Fast forward some 30 years and I've now got my own board, oche and too many sets of darts to pick from.   I have thrown precisely one 180 in my life.  :D

Yeah I might have a few sets of darts and a board out in the wash house.

Got a dartboard in the basement, but haven't used it much (besides the cheap darts it came with don't' fly straight, and just plain suck).

Keep wanting to buy some of the darts Buck made/marketed many years ago, but figure I'll spring for something more common. Local business that sells things like jukeboxes and pool tables also carries dartboards and supplies, so I think I'll check and see waht they have. What works well, but doesn't break the bank?

Used to play a lot more when I was younger.  Mom even got me a cabinet to store the board and darts in.  I wasn't very good at it but I enjoyed it.

So the general consensus is that tungsten is the material of choice for your barrels and a weight of around 24g (18g is super light, 27g is heavy and 30g+ is super heavy).  Brass barrels are cheaper but also thicker, so harder to "stack" like you see in my above photo, and are less likely to be spot on weight matched across all three darts.  I can't speak to local pricing but here I can buy brass darts for about £10 and a basic, serviceable set of tungsten darts can start at around £20.

As to what shape I'm afraid it all depends on you and how you throw them.  Some people like very grippy (I don't), some people love pencil thin darts (I prefer shorter, fatter). There's a reason there are so many to pick from and not even the pros even remotely agree.

Consistency of throw mostly comes from a consistent and stable stance.

Trying out some K-flex flights and managed a 171 while mounted on some 24g Ruthless barrels.  I wish I could claim I'm regularly banging in the big triples...but that would be a lie. :D  My finishing is getting better though.

Was playing around with some of my older, cheap ass, brass barrel darts.  In doing so I managed to throw my second ever 180.  I'll take it but it does make me wonder why I spent money on better darts.  :D (consistency BTW, that's why you buy better darts).

Congrats!

Took ages for my first, not too long for the second and a day later for the third and fourth.
Once the mind believes it can happen it just comes down to staying relaxed for that last dart.

For the odd game I don't mind throwing whatever darts.
If it's against the boys however I'll warm up properly and throw the thinner tungsten sets.

Cheers buddy.  :hatsoff:  Yeah, really working on my arm alignment and, as you say, chilling out and relaxing.  I suspect a big part of doing it with the £6 darts was that I wasn't actually trying TOO hard and had no expectations.

I played in a league. Got tired of the politics. Play online now and again. Love darts. I will easily spend 30 minutes a night going through various practise routines.
Have managed a couple of 180's, a Big Fish of 170 and 3 bulls. Highest out in a league game was 160.

sadly internal politics can ruin many a good hobby.  :-\  Good throwing though.  My biggest out so far has been a 134.  I was very, very pleased with myself.  :D  I was within a couple of mm of a 151 last week (pulled it just low into the single 20).  Most of the time I'm happy if I can find the double with three darts.

Used to play in the Friday night team when I was younger. Then real life got in the way. Still have a few sets in storage and a dartboard that I may stick up in the garage when I renovated it.

I don't obsess with keeping stats but it's nice to know if you're getting better or not. :D  It's not going to give any serious playing any concern but, for my standard, I'm very happy with an 18 dart leg.  I have indeed managed a few more 180s in practice but still not consistent enough for what I'm aiming for.  I am also challenging myself not to keep swapping darts every day and am using these Optimum 26g for the moment.

Wow! Great result for a guy with only one leg! Congrats!

This is really making me want to set up a dartboard now. Any advice about what to buy for someone who knows absolutely nothing about darts?

Spend a little bit more money on the board.  A truly basic board will have very thick wire held in place by big staples.  You will hit these all the time and cause bounce outs.  Buying a better board will make playing must less frustrating and you'll spend way less time picking your darts off the floor.

Board upgrade (a very welcome Christmas present) and managed a neat 180 within a few minutes of putting it on the wall.

They show darts sometimes on TV here (at least here in the States)..
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

Still lobbing darts at the wall.  Mostly hitting the board though.  :D  Managed to score 9 in the hardest way possible  (very nice group mind you)

Ok, I'm going to say that I'm not sure I'd have believed this if I hadn't done it myself (and how I wish someone else saw it happen).

On throwing my third dart I saw the flight flutter off the back and fall to the oche.  Normally this is quicky followed by the barrel smacking flat into the the board and hoping you haven't snapped the stem.  Walked up to the board to see what had happed to my dart.... :o

I think I'm most shocked that it went where I was aiming not just that it stuck in the board.

No score, as the point isn't touching the board, but is this a 15, 60 or possibly a 75?  :D

I throw 180s enough that I don't normally bother keeping track any more, but this group was so nice I felt I had to record it.  Left, right and last one through the middle.  8)
