Howdy, y'awl. How about a challenge for the awl's big brother, the Marlin Spike!

I expect most of us will choose something more like this:

But I won't judge.

I'm thinking July or August so we're more likely for people to actually be able to get out on the water. Maybe we can show off our knots as well to make it interesting.

Who's in, and what month would you prefer?

The Dean trad challenge is in July so August works for me.

I'm good with either month.

I think the marlin spike is the most overlooked and underappreciated tool for knives and MTs.

August is fine if that's how most of us feel. I think that there are plenty of options that would pass as trad folders, like this Kabar 1121.

Pencil me in.  Give me an excuse to get more paranoid.

BP, if we're agreed on doing this in August, you should get it added to the Challenges for 2026 thread.

Seeing as it's pretty unanimous, let's schedule it for August. I'll go post in the index thread, but can a Mod please put August in my thread title here?

I just realized I'll be cruising for part of August. I may try to bring one of the smaller SMKW house brand sailing knives with me. They're small enough that it might go through security, and cheap enough to lose.

Other than that, I did say we could take solo spikes, so I guess I'll probably grab something like this

and practice my paracord crafts on the cruise.

I have to say, I was a bit skeptical about the performance of this design vs. the more traditional spikes.  However, one of my daughters put a terrific knot in her shoelaces today, so I decided to give it a try, and it worked great!

Does look like it would be good at that.  Working with paracord I usually need to blunt the tip on a folding spike so that it doesn't damage the cord.

Some spikes are definitely sharper than others.  The sharpest are good for smaller diameter cord, and for putting holes in things.  The more rounded tips are better for medium or larger cord, as they are less likely to result in damage to either the cord or oneself.
