The humble utility knife.
on: April 19, 2026, 11:46:21 AM
To be honest, I am not much of a knife guy. For the longest time, I never considered myself even a collector of knives although I am forced to concede that I am indeed one. My deep current tends to run towards anything that is not considered a folder. This is odd because my father loved folders. He even gave me an Ireland Hobo that I still have to this day as my first knife. Still have a Japan made RUKO folder that he gave me back in grade 9. I guess I just prefer something more solid and less finicky such as full tang hunters and recently, combat knives.

As I sit here and reflect, I have come to the realization that everything I dislike about folding knives, when it comes to my enjoyment of utility knives, is exactly the opposite. The more intricate, convoluted, and gimmicky a utility knife is, sign me up! But then I always loved a utility knife. Around the house, this is my go to cutter. I love that you just replace worn out blades after abusing them...which is something I absolutely hate seeing on a good knife blade. ..abuse that is. I was never entranced with super and exotic steels. Get me a pack of 50 utility blades with a good body and I am good to go honestly.

This preference even boils down to my EDC preferences. I am quite content with a RovyVon U4 titanium keychain with built in discreet scalpel blade. It meets all of my cutting needs with the utility blade convenience of just replacing a dull and/or damaged blade out in the field.

Here is a great link to the history of the utility knife. Be sure to click some of the blue links in the article for more historical insights and a great video.

Here is most of my utility knife collection. Many newer acquisitions are missing as I have run out of space for now, and are stored in other locations. One day I will put the effort in uniting everything together.

Ah, the classic Stanley 99E in the last pic.  That's what I have in my old CLC tool belt.

True, others are nicer, cooler, or have better features, but the 99E lives on, elegant in its simplicity

I have a few other utility knives of various configurations like you, but nothing like those numbers.   :ahhh

The Screw Pop utility knife, lower left, is an excellent EDC and about the smallest available utility knife.  And only $9.99 on U.S. Amazon yo.

Chako, would you mind terribly showing us more pics of the two with the wooden scale insets and the Stanley Fatmax with the driver bits.  Those really caught my eye.

The one is a fancy Stanley with wooden handles on the right. Left of it is a Sears Craftsman. The Stanley Fatmax with driver was from a fellow member from the UK if memory serves me right.

I do not have current access to that side of the bedroom at the moment. In a slow process of organizing stuff. Reason why I will be keeping all the new Leatherman stuff in a separate section until I can get to the unit and do an internal organization. Of course I am balancing all of that while minimizing my putting weight on my right foot which will slow things even more.

In lieu of photos, here is a good link taking a closer look at that Fatmax multi=tool.

Love that October 1964 tag about acceptance based on the samples!

But BLAST!  Now I need at least to model 99's, no suffix.  You now, one to put away and one to work with"

No worries at all Chako.  I appreciate the link.

I'm liking the one with the driver.  Might have to keep an eye out for one.
