Vic First Mate
on: February 28, 2009, 08:33:57 PM
I've never been much of a SAK guy, but this thing is absolutely breathtaking! 8)

Hard to believe it was in Korea just a week or so ago, where bren10man discovered it. Then after a brief layover in Felinevet's shop, it arrived to me here in Boondockville, half a world away. Thanks guys!

Check out that marlin spike! I love how they cut away part of the alox scale for it to fit. (speaking of fit, the cutout is contoured perfectly to match the curve of the spike)

And brass liners!! :ahhh  How long has it been since Vic produced brass liners?? ???

I remember seeing a bunch of them in a Surplus store on Youge St. in Toronto . I recall wondering what they were for . I had a couple of red Pioneers with brass liners back then .

You're the mod, you can get his IP yeah? that should narrow down our search a bit,
I've only got one contact in the US, and he's more of an information peddler than a thug, so we might have to handle Bob personally.

Then it's just a matter of over-the-boarder into Canada to deal with Def, and we're all rich men.

Not wishing the demise of Bob ::) :D but couldn't you just go to the map in his profile and get a very good idea where he lives  :D

Congratulations on your purchase!!!   :climber:

I am pleased someone is pleased.  That was the intent, to share in the "Comstock Load" I found a month ago.....

http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=First+Mate+Victorinox

http://www.smartknives.com/Victorinox-Knives/Victorinox-First-Mate.htm

Anyways, felinevet told me via phone call we had recently they were discontinued around 1985 he thinks.  The box certainly would give one that impression as the new SAK Vic boxes are now silver, even for here overseas.  Before the silver box, there was a plain red box, then the crimson box you have.

Also, felinevet told me these were never sold or distributed in the US market.  Hence, I suppose, why I have never seen one sold in the US before, let alone the age of them.

FYI: I sent: 6x first mates, 3x Solos (red scales), 1x Grand Prix, and 1x Trooper (green scales) in shipment #1.

Next time I go to the store, I think I am going to concentrate on just First Mates, as that seems to be the most rare and demanded of the requests.  :gimme: And yes, there are other requests and I will check on those as well.

Be patient... :mail:.I HOPE to make it there this week, but no guarantees due to "work related things/priorities" if you know what I mean. :tu:

Tim informed me when he received the package that all 11 items I sent to him were 100% accounted for.

I was hoping to get there yesterday when I took my mom to the airport, however, Seoul is a zoo on the highways.

As I stated earlier, I HOPE to make it again soon, as work-related activities are soon going to deny any hope of a chance to make it back to the "comstock lode" until the last part of March.  Please be patient!!! FYI: I live 1.5-2.5 hours south of Seoul.....time depends on time of day and the traffic, usually a parking lot called an express way.

Even with the big marlin spike, the First Mate is pleasantly thin. Same exact thickness as a Farmer (see pic below).  They manage this by cutting away a portion of the alox scale, so the marlin spike rides "outboard" of the rest of the blades.

Some folks might miss the can opener, but not me. I like the little hawksbill blade they put in its place. :)
