leatherman sog and gerber adapters
on: February 28, 2009, 10:02:56 PM
I used a sog and leatherman adapter this weekend to work on some projects around the house. I have heard it mentioned the sog gears will dig into your hands and I have to agree. even the new model with gear covers is not nearly as comfortable as the leatherman. but were quite functional but the leatherman adapters have a smaller diameter and I used them to remove 1/4 inch nuts. I tried to remove the nuts with my sog but the adapter has a wider diameter and would not fit in tight spots.
I bought a gerber deisel today so I could test it with the new adapter gerber makes but I got it out of the package and found that the sheath was meant to hold the tool and kit but it couldn't.
I liked the leatherman adapters best.

Never used a Gerber bit adapter, hey, I have never used a Gerber in my entire life. I like the Leatherman bit adapter a lot but the only downside is that you have to use Leatherman bits. With the SOG ¼” drive you can use any bits you want and are easily replaced if they break. Therefore I choose the SOG

leatherman also produces the universal bit adapter and the bit extender. both use standard size bits. I use the universal adapter with any multi I edc. it uses bits from almost any tool or hardware store. it also can be used at 90, 45, and 180 degrees.

I should be getting a bit extender soon; it's on the way.. I like the removable driver for the Kick/Fuse/Blast/Core/Juice tools.. It allows greater versatility with having an extra 12 screwdrivers and you can use regular hex bits as well which is extremely advantageous!

Get a Leatherman Universal Tool Adaptor if you can . It takes 1/4hex bits , not those Leatherman double ended abominations , and it will assume three positions . It works a treat on my Vickies .

Sure it’s a bit adaptor, but you have to buy it separately. The SOG’s comes equipped with the ¼” drive and everybody (probably not all) have a bit kit or a wrench sett from before.

I can carry hex bits, a 1/4" and a 3/8" socket adapter with me for the Crunch in fact that is why I am wanting to carry it :ahhh :D

I am sure the SOG's is nice I just can't seem to get excited about SOG's :-\

I remember nutnfancy talked about this in the video SOG Powerlock vs. Leatherman Charge.

at 7:40 he compares them...

BTW, you should check out his other videos, especially other multitool videos! They are great!

I only have the Leatherman Tool Adaptor, so can't really compare. I would say though that I'd find it hard to imagine anything bettering it by much, it is a fantastic piece of kit. The 45 and 90 degree angling possible means that it sees a fair bit of use around the house too. Great for getting at screws under the sink, in tight corners etc.

I'm not sure if I should vote though as I haven't seen the others.
I used to come here a lot.

Use the Leatherman bit adaptor on my Skele and it works for most of my tasks. My Gerber tool kit that came with MP600 adds more reach to the stuby drivers, and more function like LM's. Haven't tried the SOG adapter yet.
Out of all the bit adapters that I own the Vic ratchet and wrench are the most used and liked, they let you use the MT and bits at the same time.

I like the Leatherman bit adapter a lot but the only downside is that you have to use Leatherman bits.

One delightful exception to that is the bit driver on the Leatherman Crunch, which takes regular bits.

It will take either long 1/4" bits or short ones,  and of course it will take the Leatherman bits too.

Some considerations? How much can the Leatherman in tool bit exchanger take? Both the bit extender and the Adapter allow the use of the 1/4 bits, but my question is can the adapter take more pressure? I´m afraid that I could brake the in tool exchanger, the adapter seems more solid? And its replaceable without problems.

PS: could somebody verify, does the UNIVERSAL tool adapter fit the Surge too?
PPS: I agree nutnfancyś youtube videos are great, he has also an alternative idea how to make an owl for the Charge!

LM UTA FTW! :P I prefer the Vic-style ratchet coupled with LM bits over all of the rest, but there was no such option in the poll... :-\

The Universal tool adapter is very strong , and it does fit the Surge .
