I've been possessed............
on: March 03, 2009, 07:36:29 AM
By Spirits  >:D  Well its now less then a month before I start my new job so today I'm going to start EDCing my Vic Spirit .The Spirit is an obvious choice because due to safety I'm not allowed to carry a pointed blade at work .I've always been fond of the Spirit but always left it behind and taken its bigger brother the Swisstool . So lets see how good the Spirit really is . I'll give updates as and when I use it .

I think the average person would be fine with going to a Spirit after using a SwissTool, but my sense is that you push your tools fairly hard.

I am interested to hear how the Spirit holds up for you.

I think you'll do just fine with the Spirit . Mine rides on the belt , the RS mostly rides in the briefcase of tool bag .

I do use my tools hard but not in all situations   I will still EDC my Swisstool RS when I'm lifeboat training and for any tough jobs I know I may encounter . But on the other hand the bottle opener on the Spirit is actually thicker then the Swisstool  :o

There is a great thread here somewhere comparing the Spirit and Swisstools that is well worth reviewing.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how well most of the Spirit's individual implements fair against those on the ST.

It is probably the difference in pliers that you will notice most. There aren't many that can match the ST "Jaws o' Death".  :D

Good luck with the test.  :)

Both are superb tools, but for me it has to be the full sized Swisstool.  :)

Thats exactly what I've always done , chosen the Swisstool over the Spirit because of its size . But the Spirit offers the better tools for its size .

According to Victorinox the Spirit is the Swisstools successor and is more ergonomic and more elegant

http://www.victorinox.ch/index.cfm?site=victorinox.ch&page=367&lang=E

I'm really going to give the Spirit a chance although its got a lot to live up too .

Just hope you don't have to turn any Phillips, I had trouble assemble a BBQ with spirit because the driver slips so much.

See I can never understand why people don't just take a sharpening stone and square off the drivers ??? I do that with all mine, and it takes less than 5 mins ::)

Well my point is people are forever modding there LM's to make them more functional, and nothings even mentioned, whereas the Vic/Wenger drivers are forever being slated, but people won't even attemp to rectify it with 5 mins work ::)

True enough, but we don't want to admit it. That would take away one of our few hacks in the Vic -versus- Leatherman debates. :D

'Cause you also have to break in the blades or work your plier head etc. in your brand-new Surge/Charge/whatever, usually "while watching a film on TV"... ::) The funny thing is that you could amend for the biggest sin of Vic MTs "while watching a couple of commercials on TV", and just sit back and watch the rest of the movie without having to blindly open and close something pinchy/pokey/sharp... :)

I agree, sanding the Vic heads to be more like a LM driver would improve them no end ;)

Actually I am a staunch defendant of Leatherman's dedicated drivers.

I'll pretend not to notice this talk of modding Spirits.
Fan of the Leatherman mini-bit driver and the Vic backspring philips.

I find the Spirits phillips a little smaller and slightly better fit then the Swisstool , although its not much better .If my Swisstools start to slip and get rounded then I do what Micky does and square them up with a stone .

Spirit on the right

And there was me thinking this thread was more about how the Spirit compares to a Swisstool rather then Leathermans  ::)

I'll do a Sprit V's Blast comparison test soon  ;)

Any way does anyone know anything about the model issued to the Dutch army ? I have a feeling thats how the 'S' mosel came about

Any thoughts yet Dunc ?  :pok:

Well yes I have actually  :D I have just got a new car , well its not exactly new . Its a 1998 Ford Escort Estate . So yesterday I was taking out the old stereo system from my soon to be scrapped Beemer . The Spirit was great for removing trim and pulling through wires . But it was the butter knife blade that really caught my attention . I had to cut some wire ties and the blunt tip was great because I didn't have to worry about a point digging into the wires while I cut .
