I just succumbed and ordered a Spirit (butter knife and scissors version).

I figure it's essential to fit between my Surge and Handyman + .... ::)

Oh yes. Perfect fit I predict ... for example

Dear fellow spirit brothers... Quick check with u guys.. Are your spirit capable of cutting soft copper cable? Those stranded electrical wire. I just got my 2nd spirit and both are not able to cut them at all properly. They just fold the strands over.  :-\ not too happy about it..

Hi , I’ve had many spirits over the years and as much as I love them the wire cutters I feel are one of it’s weak spots. They are great for hard wire but I find them lacking with soft wire like you do.

That's quite upsetting to hear.. But the same time it's a relieve.. All along I thought I got lemons.. Very unfortunately, I really need to cut soft wire almost everyday.. Really wanted to love this tool.

I'm kinda excited, the Finnish chain store Motonet is having a clearance sale, new Spirit X for 44.50€, my sister is going to check their local one out soon mine is out of stock. I actually already own the Swiss Military BO model,
but to me it's too much of an expensive collectible to really use, finally going to go Spirit EDC.  :multi:

I've never really had the situation where I needed to cut wires so I'm not the guy to ask  :D
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

Day 7 carrying my new Spirit X, my Climber is starting to feel unloved.

A couple of things I noticed on this one, the fit and alignment are exceptional, and it lays perfectly flat on a flat surface, something even my RT does not do. I am very pleased about this as I was a little worried about how badly misalignment messes with my OCD.  :ahhh (and made me hesitate to get a new X model to carry before this)

I really like the X blade, so much nicer than the butter blade which was bad at slicing, pierce cuts, and even letter opening was a nuisance with it, problem solved!  :D The only other X I have is my RT, and it's more of a collector/spare, so I never carried the X model until now. It is a much better stand alone carry than the standard one because of this single difference, and I have been carrying it by itself without feeling like I need something else. It is also wickedly factory sharp, which I also didn't expect, more like the Leatherman factory edges, just scary sharp.

I never really had a problem with the scissors, they actually work very nicely, doing precision cuts and handling both soft stranded wire and zip ties with ease, and excels at push cuts due to the limited opening. Despite the rumors that the spring has changed, it is identical to my 2004 model and mine will remain unmodified, I like them as the are. The burnishing on the rivet turned it kind of a bronze color, which actually looks pretty cool and antiquey.

The cap crimper, no, it doesn't have one. I'm not sure why those things bother me, but they do.  :salute:

So the designation XBS I suppose means Burnished something or other. It did come with some marks on the handle from assembly, and the rivets on one side are a little less burnished than the other, so the finish is not perfect like it is on the RT or the polished models, or the other blackout Spirits I have seen, but it is fully coated, and they didn't miss anything. I am going to carry and use this one, so it isn't a problem really, but not what I would expect from Ibach. I did rub the whole thing down with WD40 and got rid of the residue and excess oil, then reoiled it before I started carrying it. I haven't noticed any further deterioration of the finish or any residue in my pockets, so I suppose this is just a step they wanted to skip at the factory.

I also worked the tools open and closed, including the pliers, with oil, to remove any of the residue from the joints. The handle tools loosened up nicely, but the pliers are still slightly sticky, all having to do with the black finish I'm sure. With more use, which it is getting daily, it will be buttery smooth like my old one in no time. The tolerances are all very close, so it's really solid at this point, like it's one piece. I prefer Spirits more broken it, but it will get there.

 :tu:  :salute:
