Interesting Amish Horse Pocket Knife.
on: January 05, 2009, 12:49:38 AM
My wife was up in Blue Ball, PA a few weeks ago--in the heart of Amish Country--and came across this knife

It appears to be entirely hand made.  There are tooling marks on it, and many of them appear to be handtooling in nature.

I seriously doubt if this could be a mass produced item, since the market for horse tools surely is too limited to make this profitable.

Hoof blade (with V grind to the blade), hoof pick, awl, mane comb/botfly blade and clip point knife (also with V grind).

The finish is beautiful

Mane comb/botfly blade close up:

Hand tooling of the thumbnail nick on the blade:

Definitely limited real world appeal, but it really feels like old world craftsmanship when its in your hand.

Neat but you could be holding something that is mass produced and only rescaled. It would take a ton of machining for the mane rake, and the nail nick on the blade even has the matchstriker milled in it.
My guess whould be someone either rescaled it, or just used parts from other knives and made up what they needed on it.

Whatever it is it is very cool!

So is there no markings on it at all?

None.  I'll take some pictures of the tooling at the ends of the comb and hoof pick.  Looks like hand work to me...

No thank you, I'm all set as far as the need for flesh burrowing pests goes.  :tu:

I was under the apparently mistaken impression that botflies were of Central and South American origin, and not in the North???

Is this the horse version only? Or can one get a botfly maggot in the back whilst fly fishing in Michigan?

I have the same knife ordered out of a Horse Tack catalog, given to me by a friend around '91. Mine is tang stamped Pakistan and etched "Stainless Pakistan" on the opposite side of the blade.

Fit and finish is actually not bad on it.

Interesting!  I'll check mine when I get home, but I don't think it has any stamp on it.  Remarkably similar however.

Heh-heh, fortunately the Horse Bot Fly is a whole lot less gruesome than the ones in South America :)
