That is a very nice mod J-sews. I would be inclined to be jealous, if I knew anything about regular SOG tools. This looks super clean and professional though. Top marks from me! :tu:

That is simply amazing Bob.  I can't believe SOG wouldn't pay you something to borrow that tool and make the same for their product line.  Compound leverage and cutting head?  Total winner.  :tu:

Whoa, that's a truly awesome mod, Bob!   Great job, buddy. :tu:  (I'm starting to miss the PowerCut again... *sigh*)

Well thanks to all for the nice compliments. :)
But for those who don't know the whole story, this tool was all SOG's idea. Originally announced just before the 2008 Shot Show, the PowerCut seems like such a clear winner to nearly everyone who sees it. :) Grant and I took these photos of it back then.

After nearly two years of teaser photos, including a full listing on the SOG website, with both stainless finish and black oxide versions, we heard recently that SOG had discontinued developement of the PowerCut. :( Apparently there were difficulties with the cutter head itself. We surmise that the stainless steel construction resulted in "notching" of the cutting edges when trying to cut steel wire. :-\

The solution seems obvious to us; simply make the cutter head out of hardened tool steel, like the dedicated sidecutters you can buy at the hardware store! ::) That is what I used on my mod, and it works fine.

I hope that SOG doesn't give up entirely on the PowerCut. The solution is too easy, and the potential for such a tool is too great. :salute:

Good to hear Chris! :tu: Hopefully this will re-inspire them. :D

Again, I think the key to success will be to use a tool steel cutter head, instead of stainless steel. The only downside of course will be how easy tool steel rusts. :-\ But I figure you folks could remedy that with either your TiNi finsh (I prefer the black TiNi) or a black DLC plating to prevent corrosion. :)

Wait... does it close?

Yes indeedy. :)

However, the cutter head I started with would not open far enough to allow the handles to swing through their entire arc. That prevented the tool from closing, until I ground the contact points back a little farther.  (hope that makes sense) :P

Egad, the burden of proof weighs heavily sometimes......:( :D Okay, here's some more pics and thoughts:

One pivot bolt removed to show how the cutter head fits in the FULLY CLOSED! >:( position.

Same thing, but from directly above:

Same thing, but with handle flapper removed:

Notice that there is plenty of room for SOG to lengthen blades if they want to. :)

I still don't buy it... Those pics might just be a clever trick, and it still might not close all the way with the head attached to both handles.  I'm going to need more proof.
