Sheffield I-XL Wostenholm Sailor's knife

Was looking for some vintage SAKs at a local knife shop and came across this:

I'm not planning on buying it, but it looked like a collector's item so I thought I'd share it here.

There was a time when the I-XL mark meant a quality hardworking blade.Could the shop people give you any idea of the date of manufacture?

Looks very similar to the wartime BAK's

I used to have the Buck version and loved it.  I lost it unfortunately.   Used to carry it a fair bit when my kids were young.  It came in really handy when they were learning to tie their shoe laces.

The staff did not have any idea when it was made.  Unfortunately it was already sold when I called today - apparently it is heading back to its alma mater England.  On the bright side, the store supposedly just received a 1928 Wenger  - pics to follow in another post.

I still have my Buck Yachtsman #315 with Nickel Silver Bolsters. Those were nice knives that's for sure, too bad they quit making them.

   Since I collect knives, I have seen these before. It is called either a rope knife or a rigging knife.The original IXL was made by Geo. Wostenholm co. 1891-1971. The big long thing on side was called a marlin spike for loosening the knots on ship ropes.

If it is like the one I used to have,  you could lock the marlinspike (sort of) by pushing the bail back.

When I worked offshore we called any knife a "rope wrench".
