Maybe one could add a small table with the pin stock diameters for the different models/pins.

We already have it at post #9.

91mm: 2.5mm outer, 2.2mm (2.25) center
84mm: 2.25mm for all
74mm: 2mm modern, 1.5mm older
58mm: 1.5mm

93mm: 3.0mm, 2.5mm (center)

Also, 111mm. I'm not quite sure of those.

What diameter is the tiny pin?

On a 91mm SAK?  It is 2.2mm.
So the fourth pin, or one without the bushing, is 2.2mm? I thought I remembered it being smaller. Maybe it just looks that way from not having a bushing.

I think that's exactly what it is, 'cos it's definitely 2.2mm.  :D

Just adding some info. On 111mm models with the locking blade from the scale, a scissor spring from any scissors can be cut down and fits and works perfectly. Sorry I dont have any pics but all you do is cut a little off at a time until it fits. Remember to test it before you put the scales back on.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

A spring from any scissors? You mean 91mm etc? And for what? The main blade?

I guess he is referring to the slide lock and that you can use a shortened scissor spring (not backspring) to replace a lost slide lock spring.

and if you don't have a spare scissor spring in your parts box, I have two 111mm slide locks that are relying on a rubber o-ring to push the lock forward rather than a spring.

I'll explain and show photos after I get some rest.

If you want a way to hold the brass pin stock in a vice without damaging it, here's a nice trick I learned from a blade maker.

Take 2 pieces of flat brass bar or thick sheet, and put them on either side of a business card or thin carboard.  Clamp that in a vice, and then get a drill bit for the size of pin stock you want to hold and drill down the center of cardboard.

The drill will naturally follow the cardboard center.  Then wen you remove the cardboard and use the brass halves to clamp the pin stock it will hold nice and tight and wont damage the brass like a flat vice will.  Drill holes for all the sizes of pin stock you want to hold.

I've read that newer 91mm blade liners have a relief stamped in them for the thinner blade tang, while older ones have a flat liner. When did the change over occur?  I need to get a flat one for a mod I'm doing.

Im not sure when the swap was but yes the liners arent compatible due to the stamped out portion.  I dont have any brand new ones, but Im sure I have some older liners off used SAKs if you're stuck and cant find any.  They are just sitting around and not something I'll ever use so they have no value to me.

I never tried, but I have wondered before if one could just hammer down the 'bump' in a modern liner to make a flat piece.  I think it would work as long as it didn't deform it too much.

I was thinking about hammering it flat, but I thought the liner would deform, resulting in poor gap around the scale.  It's just laying in the parts bin, guess I'll give it a try.  If the mod works, but the fit is poor, I'll PM you?

Yup in the mean time I'll go look and see if I have any in the parts box.

Got some mod fodder in with older, thick blades. I'll scrounge a layer from there.

A quick shot here to show the new and old liners next to the blades.  On the new liner (top) you can see an indent that will sit next to the blade tang.  This is to compensate for the slimmer tang that can be seen on the newer blade next to it.  The most important thing you need to keep in mind is not to mix up old and new parts.  They won’t work and the blade will sit wrong in the finished knife, striking the top of the small blade.  Ask me how I know.  ::)

I would assume the stamped indention (compensating for the the blade thickness) shown in the picture are only done on the outer liners?  As long as one keeps the original outer liner with a layer it should be OK?

That's right.  As long as you use the right outer liner with the right blade you'll be OK. :)

Thank you for a great walkthrough, Gareth!

I'm currently summoning the courage\waiting for parts & knives to arrive before diving into a mod to make my dream SAK, and this post will be my holy book. Can't wait!

Thanks for the inspiration, and I'll post pics of my journey.

Woo hoo: first mod done!!

I present the... Al Fresco!

(I was to excited to photograph it & show the world before final cleaning & polishing...)

This SAK isn't the dream SAK I'm hoping to make shortly, but a practice SAK for that dream SAK involving throwing some 'spare' SAK parts together.

Once again, a thousand thanks for the inspiration & how-to, Gareth; your original write-up has been invaluable.

I'll make up a thread for the process in the very near future.
