Gerber eFECT
on: March 15, 2009, 07:08:40 PM
Did we know about this thing? ???

I was doing a web search for something else and stumbled across it. Apparently it is purpose-built for weapons maintenence. Comes with a digital camo sheath. Features are as follows;

  • Carry System: MOLLE Sheath
  • Finish: Black
  • Includes: Brush, Angled Pick, Front Sight Adjustment Tool in 5 & 4 Pin, Pin Punch, Carbon & Bore Scraper
  • Special Features: Built for the M16, A4, M4

In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

Mike and I saw a prototype of this tool at this year's SHOT Show and it looked pretty good then.  Unfortunately, not having an M-16 I really didn't have too much to comment on...

Looks like it fits a good niche for soldiers and shooters.  Simple and it doesn't look like Gerber didn 't go overboard adding pliers/blades/files, etc...just some basic firearm related tools that you can pocket easily.

As is the Byrd line.  Still shows that China can produce a good tool.

Oh, and I understand the Byrdwrench is meant to be good.

I have accumulated a lot of Gerber MTs now, (13 Different models), and the only conclusion about quality you can really make is that it varies a lot between the different tools.

Some of them are very high quality, some are not. If you were to avoid an entire brand because of one (or two or whatever) models, you'll miss out. No skin off my nose though, as they say.

I dunno, its a completely new one to me.

One thing I'm noting is the pivot screws, which look a lot like those on the Gerber 800 tool (which is made in the US) So perhaps this one is domestically made too?

Makes sense if it is, from marketing point of view. Take your typical gun owner in u.s. (and Canada) and their attitude on China, made in China just won't fly quality or not.

The Flik is a superbly built tool. I have criticised the design of a couple of components on it (the drivers specifically), but there's nothing wrong with the build quality at all. It's a good solid tool, as is it's big brother the Freehand.

It's all about opinions and preferences of course, but I try to make my judgements on tools after I've handled them, and even better used them a bit.

I recently received a Gerber Radius - now that is a POS, wherever it was made, but the Flik, MP600, Legend, Recoil, Clutch, Multi-Lite, Artifact, MP400, Diesel, Freehand etc, couldn't really be described as poor quality, I think that would be really harsh tbh.

I used to come here a lot.

I have the impression that the Gerber tools listed under www.militarygerber.com are just the "good" ones... MP400/600/800s, the Diesel, the Freehand, some concertina wire cutters, and the eFECT are all there is under the "tools" category. So, to get this thread back on topic, this could actually be a great little specialty tool. I'll sure give it a try if it ever crosses my way...

Even the clutch?

Yes?

I've never used the tweezers on my clutch.  Instead, I use the clutch pliers for tweezer-situations.

can't recommend it, feels flimsy, play in the tools, poor fit and finish

Really?  My clutch isn't like that.  It's pretty solid with no play in the tools.  I've had mine for about 3 years now and I use it almost daily as a light keychain tool and the finish is still pristine.

Have to agree - my Clutch is a decent tool.
Same here.

Picked up 4 of them on sale and the ones that I have opened are well made for their size.

No complaints other than the blood blisters from it snapping closed on my finger

That thread seems to suggest that more people thought the Clutch was a good tool than thought it was bad.

What were your own thoughts on it?
I used to come here a lot.

It's definitely not for heavy duty use but doesn't seem any more fragile than some of the dedicated pliers I have.
Although they are small, the pliers work well with my arthritic hands.

No way around it....the tweezers are really lame.
I haven't tried the crosspoint screwdriver yet...I just look at that and see stripped screw heads.

EDIT: Oops...I think that question was aimed at rockyman500 and not me.

I'm not suggesting that it's perfect, but these sound more like design issues, or at least the designers didn't build it to do what you want. Not quality issues. That's my point really.

I can show you US and Swiss tools that are far more useless than the Gerber Clutch. Quality - design - two different things IMO.

Considering what they cost, I can't imagine ever getting one. I guess some of the tools might be handy, but I think I'd rather use a mil m16 cleaning kit and a leatherman before I'd get one of those.

I can attest to that. Love my Tenacious. But I think Sal was able to find a good manufacturer before letting them put the Spyderco name on it.

The tool is interesting i don't think it is very useful. A 5.56 round is a AR multi tool you can use it to adjust both front and rear sights and tear down the bolt. The only add ons to my GI cleaning kit are a pair of hemostats to hold a short q-tip to clean the back of the locking lugs a 5.56 case that has been smashed flat at end for a carbon scraper.
