Dang! I gotta mail in my S557 for repairs...
on: March 17, 2009, 05:04:50 PM
The Wenger S557 is an awesome SAK.  The tools work very well.  Although I wish the universal wrench were a little bigger, overall, it has become my EDC around the farm, with the CRKT Guppie as a backup.

Last night, I noticed that the scale by the corkscrew had cracked and is peeling away from the liner.  Just got done writing the letter and packaging up the knife.  I'm going to miss it while it's away.  I'm not sure what I'm going to EDC while it's gone.

I'm sure something will come to mind.

Might just have to buy a "temporary replacement"...  :gimme:

You could try ordering new scales?  I would check with Tom first- rotokid@hotmail.com an see if he has access to Wenger scales.

The knife is so new, I'd rather send it in for repairs.  I worry that if I replace the scales, they'll void the warranty.

Nope- using factory scales won't void the warranty.  If you tried a scale mod, that might, but I doubt it.

What we really need are some aftermarket alox scales for these.   An alox 557 would so rock!

Are the factory scales just glued on?

They snap on, similar to Victorinox scales, only instead of locking on to the bushings, there are two or three clips punched into the scales.  Let me try and get a picture of what I mean...

Here is a link to a old SporK thread that Ben X found recently.  Shows how they go on pretty well.

These are standard scales, and sorry for the blurry photo, but you can see the punched out sections of the liner and the corresponding clips on the inside of the scale:

The EVO scales are identical on the inside as the standard scales.

Interesting...

Back from UPS so I guess the point is moot, but Rotokid's shop has no Wenger scales listed.  Only material for mods. (Which void the warranty, apparently)

Never assume something isn't there or in Felinevet's shop just because it isn't listed.  Always email them and see what goodies they are hiding or are willing to order for you.

You'll never know what treasures you can find if you just send them an email...  >:D

You can find Wenger and Victorinox scales at the Heidi Shop in Switzerland:
