First mod done. I present...
on: March 22, 2009, 04:53:20 AM
The Ice Climber.

Here it is next to a 91mm Tinker

The tool list:
Small blade
Metal file and metal saw
Bit driver

It turns out that the file is narrower than the main blade by approximately the width of a standard liner.  Because of this, I was able to pair it with the small blade by offsetting the spacers of the two tools, thereby saving one layer.

The scales are from an old Aluminum Land Rover plate (which I happened to have in the scrap pile.)

I'm gonna tie a short cord to the keyring and clip it to my harness with a carabiner.   This is designed to be a harness tool.  It has the three most often needed tools on it, with the least weight possible (I think).

It turns out that older main blade springs are more arced than the newer main blade springs and actually work better, giving the file and small blade better snap than the newer spring.

That's pretty amazing how the LAND and ROVER fit just perfectly within the profile of the scales. :)  Good show sir! :tu:
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

Absolutely a fine piece!  A really nice keepsake and hopefully a very functional, useable tool for you as well.  I would be proud as you must be.  Unfortunately I don't think I have the skill to make my own tool.  Well done.

I left the back open--no tool.  I drilled the hole for the keyring into that space.  The blade layer seems to work well without the back tool, so I left it out.

Bumped and bookmarked.:hatsoff:
Even though the pics are gone, it's great to know that you can pair the file(and presumably the woodsaw?  ) with the combo tool, or small blade, or inline awl.  :climber:
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

Hmm, is the wood saw the same as the metal file, in thickness at the tip and tang?
I want to do this mod with the wood saw in place of the metal file.

Ok, I've tried it a few ways.
First off, keep in mind that the wood saw has lots of big teeth that could catch on a tool or liner if it doesn't have enough space. So what doesn't work well for the saw may work with the metal file. Anyone with a metal file care to experiment and post pics?  :pok: ;)
Second, I put the Inline Phillips/Mag layer beside the corkscrew layer. Because the inline phillips head sticks out a little bit to the sides, over the liners, its basically a worst case scenario for putting the wood saw beside. If a wood saw configuration works with the inline phillips beside, it should work with anything else.  :tu:
Third, if you see/think of a configuration I missed, tell me!
Fourth, nevermind how high the saw tip is. I'm not going to grind at the spacers until I've got something that works well.  ;)

These are ranked from worst to best, in my opinion.
Show content
First up, is putting the small blade and spacer in the place of the main blade, with the saw and a spacer where the small blade normally goes.

Bad, because the small blade nick is inaccessible.
You'll need a double liner between the corkscrew layer and mag layer to stop the saw catching the phillips.
Also an old style liner without the stamped indent to get the small blade to fit.
Also, the spacer by the saw is too thick, It needs to be 0.6mm or so, and its 0.9-1mm.  :-\
Show content
Next is the small blade and spacer in its usual place, with wood saw in place of main blade.

Not very good, because the saw will catch on the small blade unless you guide it in. But has potential.
You'll need a double liner between the corkscrew layer and mag layer to stop the saw catching the phillips, also one liner and the small blade spacer will have to be shaped to provide a proper rest for the saw tip.
Also, the saw spacer here in this case is too thick. Its about 0.4mm thick, and needs to be 0.2mm thick. That can be achieved by sanding.
If you used the metal saw, you might have less/no problems with teeth catching the small blade. Needs more investigation by someone with a metal saw.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Overall, when it comes to putting the wood saw in the corkscrew layer, I'd rather ditch the small blade and take up the extra space with washers.

Like this:
Show content

The saw spacer is too thick. Its 0.9-1mm, and needs to be 0.6mm

Or like this:
Show content

The tweezer/mag end needs an additional 0.4mm spacer for everything to fit right.
And the saw spacer needs to be sanded down to half the thickness.

The latter is my favorite, and its basically the same idea as what Jaya_Man did, only with small blade spacers instead of a rest made from a scissor spring:

Nice try Pablo....would have been sweet to get the small blade on there.

Big fan of your recent posts about mod attempts with with all the pics taken along the way. Thinking about attempt my first mod and they're definitely making me feel like I have a better grasp going in.

Would the in line awl work in the place of the small blade  seems like it would be more out of the way than the blade but sourcing one is always the problem

I ended up putting the saw in place of the main blade, and filling the other side with washers.

Show content

The saw washer is 0.4mm, and it needs to be 0.2mm.  :-\
Ah well, I'll replace it sometime in the future when I get the proper thickness washer.
I've kept the 0.4mm washer as it would be worse NOT to have any washer.

Show content

I ended up dropping the brass spacer on the left as it seemed to be too thick. I'll replace it sometime with one half the thickness(0.2mm instead of 0.4mm)
The top Vic spacer is there for comparison, I only used the two on the right.

Like I said, I ended up dropping the brass spacer that you see here in the back.

El result:

The saw tip can still catch on the liners, but I'm happy, and I just need to guide the saw in.

The corkscrew wobbles in the open position badly and has no return snap, I think that the liner around the tang is slightly bent.
