Regarding the corkscrew issue, it may be that the spacer pieces aren't enough to properly tension the backspring. Maybe the tang (only) off a small blade, with one standard spacer piece might yield better results. Aside from that, that's a nice knifeless mod

I guess the old vs new file distinction is important too...maybe old file is more narrow?
