Hola, folks! I was very surprised to find there is not yet a thread devoted to the mighty Camper. The Camper has always been among my favorite models and lately, I've been wanting to carry one more often... was it the Farmer that re-sparked my interest?
Awl Campers are great, I own several, but my favorites are the ones with the "Camping" inlay with what I assume to be a tent though I have heard it often referred to as a tee-pee. I believe the one I have pictured here is the oldest/first variation of the logo with slightly thicker letters.
Anyway, I know there are many other Camper enthusiasts out there... but honestly I don't seen awl that many pics being posted in the usual threads... So, I invite one and awl to join me in this Camper Collective... discuss, post pics, get campy!!!
:salute:
-
Great idea for a thread! I only have 2 Campers here's my favorite one.
-
Great idea El C!
-
Camper is one of my favorites. Makes a great knife for a walk or ramble. Lots of function, but easy to carry. I'm also partial to it's kissing cousin, the Hiker. Both pair up brilliantly with a Classic or....hey, maybe an Executive....

I don't know about El-C, but I find Vic' saws to be the beast.
??? Hum that's best, or is it beast?
I don't know but they both work so take your pick. :ahhh
Either way good stuff here guys.

Love the saw, love the Camper logo, love the Camper model and love this Collective - lots of love!
Here's Dëäth Crüsh Cöffin sitting down outside the tent enjoying a cup of camp cthoffee with the Camping Camper.

I have one, late 80's era, early white scales, with tang stamp error.

Camper collective? Yes, indeed, I must be a part of this thread! :tu:
The Camper, my most sentimental knife of all time.
I even have a thread about it here:
https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,69622.0.html
Here are some Campers I have.
Left to right, exposed rivet, the one next to it is as close as I'll ever find to my most sentimental knife (my first knife), to the right of that is a white Camper (I dig it), then there's a nylon scaled one.
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/429/31724295540_ef8b531bda.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/QkniNL)
Then after collecting those, I found this one, it felt like opening my first ever knife, what a feeling!

A collective within a collective, very cool FB!
Nice to see another white Camper, seems to have been a popular color for this model. :tu:
I also remember the old Gemco stores, having lived in the East Bay for most of my life. :)

Love the crew Mags!! I thought of you when El C started this thread Lisa :D. Hard to argue with a Spartan with a saw!

I was happy to see that "White Camper" was stamped on the box. That way I knew it was the correct box for the knife.

Wonderful collection!!!
I quoted it to bump those photos to the top. :)
You are also responsible for inspiring me to get a Camper of my own--new old stock in box! The box was part of the inspiration and essential! Poncho65 did the same thing to me for the Ranger, constantly displaying the teepee logo until I just had to have it! I eventually found a new old stock Ranger with teepee logo in box. The in box part of the Ranger purchase was due to your influence. :)
It's so good to see your posts again! Thanks for sharing the Camper photos!

It's funny, ever since this thread started I find myself carrying my Camper more often than not. Mags custom model really intrigues me! Living out in the country like I do, I find plenty of uses for the saw. I really enjoy the Woodsman but like how nicely the Camper carries. I have to find some of those Camping scales next!
-
Love my Camper II. Just got it a couple months ago through Amazon crazy inexpensive!
I pair it up with any Leatherman with scissors and I'm good to go. The nylon scales seem softer yet more resilient, as a willow weather's the storm. Seems like they aren't as brittle as cellidor and might get scratched or gouged rather than shatter if dropped onto concrete or a rock.
-
Nylon scales are rad :tu:

Galileo says, "gee whiz, I wish we were REALLY camping".
But honestly, for being a water dog he HATES being in water. ???

As if carrying two large multitools wasn't enough, I camped out with my oldest last night. My back, hips, ....... just aren't what they used to be. I'm liking everything about Camping except the sleeping!!!

Congratulations, Barry!
The inlay Teepee logo is the most desirable Camper logo in my opinion. Earlier this year, I acquired a NOS mint in box Camper with the stamped logo. As of today's mail delivery, I am also the proud new owner of an inlay logo Camper...

Are any models other than the camper and ranger "native" camping scale bearers?

In the absence of someone replying who can speak more authoritatively, I thought your question deserved a reply. I have looked extensively but the Camper and Ranger are the only "Native" teepee logo scales as far as I know. If there are others, I would be very much surprised. I have seen posts explaining the various logos from inlay to foil stamped with comparison photos. In other words, there is variation among the teepee logos but the examples I have seen were all Campers and Rangers.

Cheers for that :tu:
I reckon they would look appropriate on any outdoors type knife, like explorers, swisschamps and the like.
I might have a go at carving a copy onto an 84mm nylon scale, if I ever get around to recreating a camper in that size.

Some time back, I decided to make a few 'Personal Survival Kits'. Something a little larger than an Altoids tin size, but not by much. I looked at a number of possibilities for what I'd put in it for tools, and when weight, space, and cost (particularly used) were all factored, the Camper was the winner. I got three used from the MTO store, cleaned them up and sharpened them.
These things pack in a lot of really useful survival function. Better if I can get some of those 'Firefly' ferro rods to replace the toothpicks. I'm hoping those go beyond the kickstarter campaign. Great stuff for emergency survival gear.
Sorry I don't have any pics. The three I got are not all that glamorous. One red, with a VERY faded 'Camping' logo, one red nylon scales, and one black scaled. Nothing special to look at, but super useful, and a bargain used.

I didn't realize I was part of the Camper Collective until today when I was poking through a drawer of extra Tinker and found this one lurking there with a corkscrew and wood saw. Thinking it a Spartan I pulled it out, saw the scales and the wood saw.
Quick and dirty photo. Cellidor scales are hot stamped and imprint is slightly worn; lighting here doesn't show it very well. Appears to be a slightly newer one with hole in awl, key ring on spring (versus spacer) and the half stop on the cap lifter. No straight pin hole, though. Would need to sum that all together to date it along with tang markings, but more than I want to spend time on this afternoon. Probably some time in the 1990's
Sometimes I don't even know what I've got stashed away that was received with another SAK I wanted

What a beautiful knife Lisa!! I'm looking forward to carrying mine again 😊
Thank you Barry! :tu: I'm going to carry mine today with my Vagabond. They should pair nicely since the Vag doesn't have a wood saw.

:like: Nice one FB! I'd like to see the box label when you get it, please.
I just got another one in too...Hoffritz Camper, but only the tang stamp ...and a clip point. Real odd-ball. No Hoff inlay and it looks like late '75 or '76 construction from what I can tell. Shield is correct for this date range and the clip point must be when they were getting rid of all remaining clip points in stock. Awl and liner configuration confirm timeframe. Assembly looks original and I almost want to tear it apart to confirm.

I don't recommend this. I did it once on a Scientist and I regretted that decision later.

This was a great find for me. Little use, although the scales showed evidence of it being carried a good bit. Now cleaned, polished, and sharpened. It got a fresh toothpick, but I kept the aluminum head tweezers. A little extra bling seemed only too appropriate for this old beauty! :tu:

I love my Camper. It was my carry the other day and certainly presents useful extras over the excellent Farmer, which we recognise as a solid classic in its own right.

I find the Camper my most comfortable 91mm with a corkscrew. I’ve come to realize that the Spartan, much as I like its toolset, is too thin in my hand. The Camper’s saw adds just the right amount of girth, with the bonus of being a tool I like to have outdoors. It fits the knife pocket :) of my favourite jeans just nicely.

FireAnt works great with the wood saw! Unfortunately for me, it didn’t fit some of my late ‘70s vintage Hoffritz Campers. The helix tinders can still work, so I’m pairing those with Fireflies as before. FireAnts and tinder go into the CS of more modern knives. I use a newer Ranger, PS Spartan and my OG ‘84 Champion for the FireAnts. Modded one Firefly to fit the back tweezer slot too. That’s on a Champion Plus.
EDIT:
I have picture in the FireAnt campaign thread stating on p2:

Looks good! Did you make them yourself? The one set of wooden scales I've made I got lucky on and the holes were perfect and the scales actually snapped on. Because of that, I left them as they were. Did you use anything to keep them on? Adhesive? If yes, what did you use? I'm curious about how flexible/brittle and how permanent your adhesive was if you used any.
Thanks!
David

Yes, I made them myself. My wife works at a custom bass shop and they use a bunch of exotic woods that I am lucky enough to get the cutoffs of. The scales are affixed with two part epoxy. Not much chance of them coming off without being broken off. I glued the wood on then shaped them, at first with my little 1”x30” beltsander, then with a jitterbug palm sander and finally by hand, working my way down to a smooth finish. Topped them off with some boiled linseed oil and rubbed in a few coats and will rub in more over the coming days, weeks and months gradually spacing out the coats more and more.

I like the Camper. I'd miss me scissors if it were a solo knife, so I usually pair it with a Classic.
That combination seems really useful to me: a combination of tools and options. The only redundancy might be in carrying two small blades, but I wouldn't complain about having an extra sharp with me.
My deployment SAKa were an Alox Camper, a.k.a 'Farmer', and a Classic. I never wanted for anything more.

Hmm still waiting for the scale and scale tools I ordered from (forgot)one of those sites

This might be a silly question but... Why is there no 84mm version of the Camper?
It's not like we have a 84mm scissors situation here, the 84mm wood saw is still in production!

Exactly! I love the Tourist and the 84mm size category in general. The wood saw is on the Walker… It’s right there!

Absolutely can and did for us this summer! :tu:
-
I used the saw! But not on wood…
I have a little plumbing project going and this old hard plastic flexible tube/pipe that has to be replaced. It was capped by a threaded brass fitting that I just could not get off with my hands. Plus it was under the sink, so I was in an awkward position.
Then I remembered my Camper was in my pocket! I whipped out the saw and was through that 2” flexi-tube in under 2 minutes!
Then I used the main blade and bottle opener to gradually work the remains of the flexi-tube off the end of the brass fitting since I need to reuse it.
I’m very impressed with the saw! I’ll probably be using it on some PVC later today too. I look forward to trying it out on some actual wood at some point. :D
-
The Camper performed admirably again today.
My plumbing project continued. I had to reconstruct a poorly done sink drain and air conditioning condensation line tie in. Apparently someone thought that a roller coaster style loop the loop on a gravity based drain was a good idea….
I had to cut through some 3/4” PVC and a few other plastic pipe types to get everything to fit correctly and create a non-gravity defying drain.
Plastic pipe stands no chance against the Victorinox saw!
I really like the Camper though. I might not need a saw every day but when you need one there’s really not much you can do/use as a substitute. Even when it’s not being used the saw layer adds just enough thickness to the SAK to make it a more comfortable grip versus the 2 layer Spartan.
Plus, I usually have a Rambler in my pocket so I have scissors covered that way.

The other thing is the scissors. Vic scissors are fantastic, no question. But at some point I realized that the 58mm scissors were sufficient 99% of the time. I cannot remember a time when I needed the 91mm scissors because the 58mm version couldn't do the job.
So the fact that the Camper doesn't have scissors isn't that big a deal for me (at least so far!).

Happy to join in. Did you see how the Cheap and Cheerful section got spammed several times yesterday? Each one had a different user name but the same "I'm happy to have finally joined" with some link to a packaging outfit. Every time one was taken down by the admins another would pop up. Seems like Cheap and Cheerful gets lots of spam.
Best wishes. G
