Wave replacement Paul?...thats a mighty big job for a S31
Theres another , i did search  oh well it must be lost somewhere :D TBH mate ive been bored of my set up for some time now, nearly 14 years of wave action has started to make it a bit bland so i decided 2012 would be a year of trying new tools and odd ideas, not sticking to my usual set ups and carrying paried tools ie explorer and paratool or sl pliers and huntsman etc, i want to get some real action out of my stuff this year and have planned a few camping trips and long MTB rides combined with camping this year, :tu:

Thank you very much! I am a big fan of the Paratool and EDC one in my backpack. 8)

OK, here it is... quick and dirty with no hair and makeup :D
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7034/6730277881_b9380b65e7_z.jpg)
I realise I have a lot of drivers in there and no can opener... might change that. I have tried scissors and the 1/4" bit drive in the past, but ended up wanting it simple as a good pair up for small 58mm Vics with scissors.
The bottom left driver has in fact been sharpened into a chisel so it's not redundant.

That is really cool chrissy, i never use a tin or bottle opener or a awl, i use plenty of drivers and scissors plus i do like the look of sogs saws, ill see what i come across and change it over time :salute:
I thought i better add a fanned pic lol, with HH nylon molle pouch great pouch for the money, i got this paratool boxed with nylon pouch but am testing out this pouch at the moment .

Thats a shame, i wonder how long till we see others using this patent, i like the way the pliers swivel, fiddly but usefull idea, :tu:
-
I'm in, I like the ParaTool, odd, lightweight, compact and diy tweakable :D I've added a rescue hook, not fussed with scissors as I pair it with a SOG CrossCut :tu:
I also want to swap out the two blades for a combi blade and a saw.
The awl is excellent, rescue hook works well, good all round tool.

Cheapest I can find at the mo is here (http://www.handyniknaks.co.uk/sog-paratool-s31-multi-tool-knife-sog-multi-tools-pliers-594-p.asp) that's £30 less than Heinnie :tu:
-
Thanks for the heads up guys.
-
As kirk13 said, Handyniknaks are probably best right now, Amazon UK have gone right up, about the same price as Heinnie. Might be worth asking fellow US members :tu:
-
OK so enough peer pressure already!I'll take the Paratool to work tomorrow!I've missed playing with it!

Can i fit the v-cutter next to the awl
-
The v-cutter needs a little washer on one side IIRC, otherwise it catches on whatever is next to it.

Thanks to Travis I got a paratool from Amazon.com for 45.69 USD. That is MUCH cheaper than I could have found locally in Canada. It was nice to get this in the mail this morning before heading out to work. I also got my charter member goodies in the same box.
I'm going to take apart my powerlock and fiddle with all the tools to figure out what is the best Paratool loadout. I love the paratool, perfect for lanyard pocket carry by design, small and UK legal since its none locking. I dont know why these arent more popular, Id choose this over the only leatherman non locking option of a juice.

I look forward to see how you get on mate, im pretty happy with my set up but will have to see how often i use the V-cutter, but i dont think it will make much difference to the load on the set up so will probably keep it,i agree on these as there a great size for edc and adaptable for the users needs, plus bonus is uk legal, :tu:

Nice one Man :salute:
That's the one...I bought it from Tim (Felinevet) a few years ago now.
I can tell that's the same one by the scuff mark above the O and next to the G ;)
Think I'll get a nice leather pouch made for it :)
-
Finally got one of these really cool SOGs. here she is sitting next to another favorite but that another thread. I now have to hunt down a BO and if the price is right a Blackie Collins sheath.

Welcome to the club! The Paratool is indeed a very nice mt. :multi:
-
thank you, off she goes for her first ( with me ) outing. I really like the design even with the quirky handles needing to be aligned when closing.
-
Does it sound like a transformer when you open it? Its a cool lookin tool. Nice find
-
how flipping awesome would that be? I do however make that sound in my twisted head when I open all my MTs.

Very cool! Would love to own such a sheath, too. :tu:

I recently got a Sog paratool at this point I'm not sure how it compares to my other MT's it's very different. I have to carry/use it more.
-
From none to two in a month. :D
The ss paratool was my first Sog I ever got.(exept from crosscut and crossgrip)Then recently I found a bo one. Very nice.
There is something about the Sog design that I like an i guess I will get more by time.
But they are not very common here.
-
Now I can finally join this club! :D
I received yesterday an earlier version, with tools that seemed almost unused, but tool itself was quite dirty with some gunk and stuff.
It received complete tlc, and now it's beautiful again.

Great job Vlad.. :hatsoff:

I'm not a fan of SOG tools in general, but the Paratool is the exception--especially the ones with the earlier tools like mine. I carry it frequently.

It's a one of a kind ;)
If I can get some glow powder I might do the same with my SOG PPP :tu:

The chisel grind knife blade on mine has to go and I have a replacement blade on the way from Heinnies which I presume will fit straight in. They do say it's compatible.

Having spent a bit of time with Polly now, I can say I like it a lot. It's got real charm in an old school way. The fact that it's not perfect adds to the appeal. I've put a little love into it, tightening a couple of pivots, oiling and putting an acceptable edge onto the chisel ground blade and I feel it's mine now. I know I'm a saaddo but there you go :)
-
Considering that I seem to more or less permanently carry a PST again, and spent some time lovingly hitting a Japan PST with punch and club hammer yesterday,I can't say anything :D

John, I had a late production PST that I loved and really miss. It had IMO the improved drivers which were least likely to fold when in use. That's one I never should have let go. Probably hard to get hold of a good one now
-
Your timing is a bit bad...last September a bloke in Dorset was selling late model PSTs in BO for £35,or there abouts.
I know a place here in London that was still selling NIB PSTs ,albeit at £70 odd about 18 months ago. Mind you,at that price, they likely still have them!
-
Typical. When my boat comes in I'll be at the airport ;)
-
Here are my additions to the club. A curious buy turned into a "why didn't I buy this sooner?". All around cool tool I think.
-
Welcome to the club :tu:
-
Would a V-cutter fit in the paratool ? The SOG site says no its not compatible. On the other hand say, the Phillips driver, its compatible with all other SOG MT's including the Paratool. Has any one added the V-cutter to the Paratool with success?
-
There used to be a proper seatbelt cutter for the PPP and the Paratool .
I know that standard SOG scissors don't fit Paratools ,but I'd be interested to see if the vcutter fits

I fitted the BO twin bevel blade to my Paratool and what do you know, the blade was too long for the frame ::) A couple of minutes with a DC4 stone and all is well, an easy job :) I just needed to take a very small part of the blade tip off.
-
Here's a pic which shows how much of the blade tip was removed to make it fit. Might be of interest to others who wish to change the chisel grind blade.

Just got my Paratool,
altrady got a PPP and various other multitools (Sprit, Rebar, Swisstool, Blast)
After a few little mods, the Paratool is now my UK legal EDC.
Just waiting on a bit driver set and saw to arrive.
Added some scissors and a bit driver. Scissors needed a few MM off the tips to fit properly.
The plier heads don't fully click into place due to the bottle opener, but its hardly noticable.
Here are some pics

Welcome to the forum, kerwin. :waving:
Nice tool loadout on thet Para.
One question though, are you sure that having it's UK legal, I don't think the law applies to plain edge blades only, so the serrated one might be an issue.
-
Nice looking tool! I like the tool loadout. Does the Paratool have locking blades?

Nope, it functions the same as any multi with inside tools ala PST, but as you close the handles to use it, the handles interfere with the knife blade (and other tools too) to fold all the way closed so it has been discussed that this could be seen as a problem in the eyes of the law. ::)
-
That's why i'm swapping the knife for the saw blade once it turns up. :-)
-
Hey I have one of those SOG's.
I swapped out the file for a seat belt cutter.I don't see that cutter on the SOG website.
I would like to have the scissor option,as they have proven their usefulness on other multi-tools.

Though I haven't tried them personally, I think pretty much everyone round here has agreed SOG scissors pretty much suck, so, I'd stick with your V-cutter ;)

Agreed. SOG scissors = crapola.

This is where a forum, such as this, pays dividends. The information gleaned from using these tools, that is passed on to other members, saves time, money and frustration.
Thanks for the tip about the scissors.

They are both identical and one even appears to be brand new. The newer version wears a Cordura Velcro case and the other, an original Blackie Collons straight drop resin retention. Love it! Sog is winning it for me lately what with the ability to modify their tools to your liking, their precision engineering, compound leverage. All the other SOG models are some form of everything you're likely to need and little you're not. I'm a bigger SOG fan everyday. Both have same 1/4 screw takedown procedures.
Stew...

Added some scissors and a bit driver. Scissors needed a few MM off the tips to fit properly.
The plier heads don't fully click into place due to the bottle opener, but its hardly noticable.
Here are some pics

color me confused though, I thought the sog scissors wouldn't fit, I guess it's because they are a little long and need to be trimmed?

:salute: Yeah I one of the few SOG fan here...lol!
They should fit right in as far as I know. They are no longer than the file or knife blade.a couple of others here have put them in the Paratool.

Just picked up an older paratool w/ blackie collins sheath off of ebay. I really like it and will carry it over some of my other multi-tools because the sheath is so dang nice, and it has a leatherman style can opener. Why did SOG drop that style of can opener for the SAK style one?
-
Count me in, just picked this up off of e-bay...Pat pend. model

I grabbed a couple of old ParaTools from eBay for a decent price. They were filthy and with some surface rust but after a thorough cleaning they are like new! The old construction and tools feels so much better than the new one. Sturdier yet smoother to operate at the same time.

Will the Paratool fit in the SOG small leather sheath ?

It fits, but when you close the pouch the attachmentring pushes against the leather, so I think it'll be ruined quickly.. :)

I have joined the club. :salute: I got a good deal on one that had modded (added saw, strap cutter), but apparently never actually used. Perfect shape, not a scratch on it, no sign the blades or drivers had ever been used.
Pros: Fit and finish, tool machining, unique design, good weight and size, high tool density.
Cons: poor tool retention, plier mechanism makes extracting handle tools or closing the tool relatively slow.
Some preliminary thoughts:
I love the fit and finish. All the tools are precisely machined, everything fits together nicely, tolerances are tight. I love the "Victorinox style" high polish finish. Great for rust resistance and just makes the tool feel high quality. I much prefer the polish to the matte finish of some other tools. The tool has great weight and high tool density for its compact form factor.
I must salute SOG for using hex bolts for the pins. Adjusting tension, or swapping tools, is trivial compared to a Leatherman or Gerber.
I got this mainly because I was intrigued by the plier mechanism. It is stiff enough that it stays open when you want it open, closed when you want it closed. I don't know if this will degrade over time though. You can open the tool one handed but it is slow. Closing the tool is actually annoying. You need to line up the handles and close them symmetrically, so that the locking tabs on the handles line up. These hold the tool closed (no wobble in the handles when closed) but it takes far more mental effort to close than just about any other multi tool.
So far, I've tried it on some nuts here and there and I don't think this tool will fold up on me. There is no play in the plier pivot, and I have no complaints about the plier head. Pretty standard. I have not had a chance to try the cutters. The pliers are quite comfortable to use, no sheet metal cutting into your palms.
While the plier retention is excellent (which was a worry given its unique design), the handle tool retention is very disappointing. Honestly, not much better than many low grade Chinese multitools. The handles seem to be made of high-quality sheet steel of decent thickness, so I am not sure why the spring retention is so weak. Two possible factors:
- Perhaps the spring tab is cut too long (and it therefore too flexible)? I am not sure. My PSTs are made from thinner sheet metal but the tool retention is outstanding (maybe too stiff!).
(http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx298/Nets1988/IMG_20160311_133934_648.jpg) - The handle tools don't actually have a flat part that engages the spring. Think of how that flat bit that clicks into place on a slipjoint knife, or on the PST tools. Instead, these tools (which are interchangeable with the locking Power-Lock) have this little circular tab that doesn't really seem to engage with the spring at all. A picture might help explain what I mean:
In fact, after using the pliers, the tools become loose in the handles and can "stick out", which is dangerous. I could easily see a careless person cutting themselves on the protruding knife after using the pliers for a while. I supposed adjusting the tension on the pins might fix this.
Design wise, the Leatherman Wingman/Sidekick have a similar problem but they seem to angle the spring in such a way that tool retention is far better.
The poor tool retention makes it hard to recommend this tool for more than light use despise the obvious care that went into its manufacture, which is a bummer.
As for the handle tools themselves:
- The knife is fine. The chisel edge on a tool that otherwise oozes quality is disappointing tough.
- The wood saw is not as a good as Victorinox or Leatherman, but is more than adequate. Did just fine on some wood from the backyard.
- The file is excellent. Very aggressive teeth on both sides. It reminds me of the Gerber file, but with a notching underside as well. One gripe is that the teeth do not extend all the way to the end (which is also a gripe with Victorinox and Gerber files). In fact, the file has a beveled flat tip. Is this intended to be a large flathead driver? If so, that is pretty boneheaded--it would be inviting a real headache for SOG's warranty department.
- The awl is great. Very sharp, very robust. Only weakened by poor retention.
- The strap cutter is interesting. Honestly, I would have rather this was made a short tool (with just the hook tip), leaving room for a regular serrated blade in its long slot.
- The can opener is fine. On my paratool it is in the Victorinox style, with a small driver tip. I see older paratools have a Wenger style hawkbill opener, which in my experience is just a better can opener. On a tool with so many drivers I am unsure if the added small driver tip (with no reach) is worth compromising the opener functionality.
- The large driver is unremarkable (what is there to say?) and seems like it could handle light prying tasks.
- The medium driver is fine. Not sure the tool needed it to be a bottle opener as well, this seems like functionality that could have been combined with the can opener.
- The phillips driver is precisely molded and has a nice long shank. It does seem a tad soft though, just trying it out on some screws around the house.
Overall, it is a fun tool that I enjoy playing with. Unfortunately, the poor tool retention and slowness of tool extraction make it hard to recommend. :-\
-
That flat bit on the end of the file is in fact a screwdriver. I think its interesting you liked the file. Many others (myself included) think SOGs files are just terrible. Have you actually used it yet?
-
Between my wave and my SOG, the SOG goes more places with me. My only complaint is the weight. I wish there was a 3/4 size one with the same design and features.

3/4 the size of a Paratool? That seem a little small given that it is already a light tool.
The SOG files seem to be variable, ranging from nice and aggressive to little more then a textured piece of metal.
-

I was a bit wondering about that too, I guess it's an older model (still made in the US?) and that could make the difference?

I tried it on a piece of wood in the backyard and it did well. It has pretty aggressive teeth.
The file on my powerlock is garbage though. Textured metal indeed.

Not sure this picture shows the difference. On the left is the POS Power-Lock file. On the right is the pretty decent Paratool file.

Lately I have been carrying Paratool, and it really started to feel better and better!
First the mechanism was annoying, but it took some practice, and now I really enjoy it.
I have to say that this tool is really fun to play with!
I havent done any heavy duty tasks yet, just basic package opening and prying, loosing few bolts with the pliers. You know.
My Paratool is unmodded, and I have been thinking about adding some extra tools to it. The other side has room for two narrow tools, right?
At the moment it has only file, punch and a can opener. What tools would you recommend?
I was thinking about 1/4 driver, it can fit right?
I don't usually need saw, but it would probably look better?
v-cutter also is interesting, as I don't yet own SOG with that tool, is it good?
Any other ideas?
:D

Assuming I'm thinking correctly that the other side has a PE and serrated blade, phillips driver, bottle opener and flathead.....
You could actually fit a long tool and a short tool in there, although you will find that most of SOGs long tools (saw, V grind blades, scissors, & possible the V-cutter) are about 2-3mm too long to fit in an unmodified Paratool. Kampfer covers this mod pretty well here: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=63536.0 (As a side note, I always feel weird linking to this page, because I gave him that Paratool, and he credits me first thing...)
I say you go for the mod, and fit either Scissors (if you like them, they take up 2 spaces I believe) or a saw (if you prefer that). The 1/4" driver adapter is neat, but needs an adapter and bit kit to work, so is really only good for sheath carry.
The V cutter is cool and unique, but a pretty niche tool, especially as you already have a serrated blade for cutting ropes and fibers.

I got a second Paratool that is matte. Different tool selection as well. I was looking thru this thread and remembered the Paratool comes in BO as well :D. I may have to hunt one down as I originally said I was.

Well, I'm very late to this Club ;) But seeing that the Paratool is now discontinued, it may get a little more interest from collectors. Here's my entry...

One of my Paratools had a snapped Phillips. On closer inspection, the older PST Phillips is very similar...and I just happened to have a spare. :D
Just needed slimming down and was a direct drop in. :tu:

How reliable are the pliers of this tool? I can't help but thinking that they would unexpectedly fold close in your hand while being used, especially when under load
-
The joint locks up under load and because the geometry of the folding mechanism is 90 degrees to the pivot, there's no serious build-up of tension to cause them to 'pop' out of position under load.
...and they're easy to upgrade :D

Received a BO Paratool from a trade with encki - very impressed so far. It has the 1/4" bit adaptor fitted so I'm going to get the bit set for it and maybe the scissors.
Having read some negative reviews of the scissors, what are peoples experience of them?
-
Ain't she a doozy! :like:
No experience with scissors in a Paratool, but my experience with SOG scissors in their newer tools has been....disappointing....to say the least.

The second MT I bought (first was a PST). The wood saw blade was sold separately at the time. I carried this for years at work and it's help up well. I liked that I could take it apart easily, and that it had more options than the PST. There's more fiddling around required to get blades out, but overall I liked it and it got the jobs done. It still rides in one of my packs.

I recently acquired a Paratool that had been sitting in a kitchen drawer for decades. It was pretty funky and just getting the tools to move was some work. The manual uploaded to multitool.org keyed me into how to take the tools apart. After some oil, WD40, soap, and a tooth brush, though, it’s in much nicer shape! I need to finagle with the tool setup a bit still. It’s a neat little tool.

You're going to like it! I'm a big SOG fan. If I can scare up a Powerlock I'm going to do a challenge sometime next Spring :ahhh.
Now that you mentioned it, maybe a Paratool would be fun :D

My first multi-tool was a Paratool. I've been hooked ever since. When I abused it to death my dad (who bought it for me as a birthday present) sent it back to them and they replaced it with this one. When he died, I retired it and bought a Powerlock.

I wonder how many U.S.A. Paratools were sold....
-
Do you know when they were discontinued?
-
The ParaTool was a SOG fixture, only being discontinued sometime after 2016. (с)
-
Thanks Madfish!
-
I carry this everyday along with the small pocket knife.
I removed both blades and the awl as not wanting to fall foul of the law. I left the saw hoping that only an absolute jobsworth would arrest me over that.
-
I like that setup Chip! That's a great EDC combination. I've found the SOG saw is a good one. I used mine to cut PVC awhile back, with no issues. I can't imagine anyone giving you grief for having a daw. In fact, every bladeless multitool I've seen comes with one.
-
Thanks, I put it together a long time ago and then did not carry it for years as it required me to carry a knife also. So for a long time carried either my leatherman c2 or cs4. But now the fact I have to carry a knife with it is the very reason I carry it.
-
I find, especially with SOG, that carrying a separate knife is the best way to go. I don't have a Paratool yet, but I'm on my second Powerlock and it's a great deal easier getting a blade out from a knife than it is the Powerlock. Do you belt sheath carry it or pocket carry?
-
In this pouch in my front right pocket. This pouch is new, I used to keep it in a double nylon leatherman pouch that came with a freestyle/torch combo that I cut a small hole in the flap for the eyelet to stick out.
-
I like that! One last question: is the saw on your Paratool the same as the Powerlock saw? I'd love to have one with a saw. It would definitely be more handy than the Powerlock, especially in Summer.
-
I think it is just a standard power lock saw. I don’t think any of the parts I fitted were paratool specific. I just bought a load of sog parts at the time from an online retailer as they were readily available, I don’t know if that’s still the case.
If you notice the silver swirl about an inch back from the plier head on the inside of the front face of the handle, that is where I caught it with my dremel stone while grinding the inside side of the handle down a mm or two to allow the saw to pass as it was a tiny bit too long.
I did not mind doing this at the time as I had a couple of paratools and I think they were still in production as I bought it new at the time.
I’m glad I did as It suits me and I would not use it otherwise.

Thank you sir and my sentiments exactly. :like:
