Title: Multitool Tools
Post by: Roadie on September 18, 2007, 01:26:44 PM
Hello

Following on from the Multitol Timeline i am thinking of putting together a "database" of what tools each multitool contains. It may take a while and i may not even progress much with it, but i was hoping people could add to this list of tools/features found on multi's.

Here's what i've got so far.

Plain Edge
Serrarted Edge
Combo Edge
Pliers
Sprung Loaded
Flickout Pliers
Locking Pliers
Cutters
Hard Wire Cutter
File
Metal Saw
Wood Saw
Saw Coupler
Large Bit Driver
Small Bit Driver
2mm Flat
3mm Flat
4mm Flat
5mm Flat
6mm Flat
7.5mm Flat
Philips
Hex Socket (Crunch)
Bottle Opener
Can Opener
Crate Opener
Punch Down Tool (As on paladin tools)
Wire Stipper (like on the new waves can opener)
Lanyard Ring
Scissors
Replaceable Carbide Cutters
Crimper
Awl
Corkscrew

I've probably missed some really obvious ones out!
Thanks Roadie

ok after a bit of work i think i've got a layout i'm happy with. The only thing i would like is if some one could measure the width of the leatherman small and medium flat screwdrivers that would be appreciated (don't have access to any tools with them on)

Anyone got any ideas about this, does it seem like a good idea etc...?

Pic to show what i've done so far.

Here are a few more multi-tools (I used the row numbers from your worksheet):

Kershaw A100C/A100L:
4,5,8,9,11,12,20,24,26,27

BuckTool 360, 360BK, 360CM
3,4,5,9,17,19(closer to 3.5mm),21,24(#1 & #2),26,27

BuckTool 360FL
4,5,9,11,17,19(closer to 3.5mm),21,24(#1 & #2),26,27,30

BuckTool 360WM
3,5,9,11,17,19(closer to 3.5mm),21,24(#1 & #2),30,35

BuckTool 360 Harley Davidson
4,5,9,11,17,19(closer to 3.5mm),21,24(#1),26,27,30,35

SOG S42 (typical configuration)
4,5,9,11,12,17,20,23,24(#1),26,27,31,35

SOG S60 (old version with scissors)
4,5,9,11,12,13,17,20,22,24(#1),26,27,31,32,35 and adapter

You might break #23 (Phillips) into #1 Phillips and #2 Phillips.  Some tools have a #1/#2 Phillips driver and some tools only have a #1 Phillips.

Well i've bashed a few more tools in, if any one can see any glaring errors please draw them to my attention, if people want i can make the file available to download. Any advice on how to better lay it out/make it easier to use please shout up!

Thanks for all the help!

Here is a link to the Excel version should anyone want a copy (and if they feel like editing it feel free! then email it back to me and i'll upload the edited version......unless there's a way to do it on the wiki page that is?)

Edited to get the link right!

There should be a way to put it on the Wiki- in fact, this was one of the reasons we launched the Wiki now.

Of course I have no idea how to do it, but I'm certain it can be done...  I'll play around and see if I can figure it out if no one else comes up with anything.

I'm sure there'll be a way to do it! Trouble is i can't just take a screen shot of it anymore as it's wider than my screen! (i could take multiple screen shots but that takes effort!)

Hmmm...putting it on the Wiki would be ideal, but I haven't seen a way to make Excel-style layouts yet. I'll look into it as well and let you know.

No it doesn't look like you can get excel proper on wiki, the closest i've found is basically just a table layout, which loses a lot of the formating. I tried exporting the excel file as a html file but it doesn't support the vertical text which means a very very wide document that isnt easy to compare multitools with.

That's what I was thinking, but I was too lazy to type it all!  :P

Darn.

I've converted your Excel spreadsheet into a PDF file (see attached) My hope was to host the PDF file somewhere (on the Wiki itself would be best) then link to it for viewing from a page on the Wiki.

But I don't know how/where to host or post or embed a PDF file. Any ideas anyone?

Post by: Roadie on September 24, 2007, 01:01:58 AM
Looks good! But yeah the hosting is a problem unless Def has a solution...the other option is to export the pdf to a picture file, jpeg seems to mess the colours up but png seems to work (trying to find a way to export the excel straight to a png)

Tada!! Here's (admittedly quite large) pic of the database in its current revision. Nice and easy to distribute in its picture form, but it does mean that editing has to be done in excel and then exported out of excel but its a fairly painless operation.

If some one can be bothered the victorinox section is a bit sparse (mainly due to my laziness in searching the site) just need the tool selection info and the size of the screwdrivers (my swisstool is 150miles away  :( )

Most excellent indeed Roadie! Nice job!

I went ahead and uploaded your spreadsheet picture onto the Multitool Encyclopedia. It was kinda wide, causing a lot of side-scrolling. So then I rotated it 90 degrees in my picture-editing software, and narrowed it down a bit.

Here's what the Encyclopedia page looks like: https://wiki.multitool.org/tiki-index.php?page=Blades+and+Tools+Database

I'm afraid the shrinking and rotating caused the red Victorinox listings to get a bit blurry. (Not sure if you wanted it shrank and rotated in any case)
Title: Re: Multitool Tools
Post by: Roadie on September 24, 2007, 10:14:53 AM
Thanks!

Having it rotated does make it a lot easier to view doesn't it. I'll try and rearrange it in excel and upload a version fresh from there that should hopefully stop the blurriness.

Awesome, the encyclopedia is shaping up quite nice. In the end this Tiki combined with MT will makes us....dare I say....UNSTOPABLE?  :ahhh Well it's a thought, there IS nothing like our site on the internet to date and I am amazed every day by the people and the ingenuity that is breathed into what makes this site what is it every day. MT is hard work but it's a passion, the Tiki/Wiki has alot of ground left to cover, and what is great is that us mods don't have to do it all. In someways the tools info is like mini reviews, and then they link back to the real review (if we have one). I just wanted to say that I appreciate everyones commitment and continued contributions to MT, if it wasn't for the users and collectors all of this would not be possible.

Thanks for everything you guys do.
(sorry to get mushy, watching this site grow is like watching your baby grow up)

Thanks (on behalf of everyone i think!) David but without the admins working tirelessly behind the scenes we wouldn't have a site to congregate on so don't sell yourself short on the praise front!  :multi:

OK here's a rotated version thats not fuzzy. If anyone has any suggestions on how to better arrange/display it please shout up! :pok: Also if there are any glaring omissions of multi's please bring them to my attention and i will try and squeeze them in!

One thing I would suggest...

Add the column headers (the blue section) at the top of each manufacturers section.  It's somewhat frustrating to scroll from the top of the page to the Buck, SOG, and Vic sections while trying to keep an eye on one column in particular.
Title: Re: Multitool Tools
Post by: Roadie on September 24, 2007, 06:45:00 PM
That makes sense, i don't have to worry about that on the excel document as the headers stay still while i scroll down, also the list of tools stays still. Will add it in and upload a new updated version tonight some time (hopefully).

Yep, the extra (blue sections) aren't needed when viewing in Excel, but would make sense on an image file.
