Title: Buck 112's Let's see them !
Post by: SteveC on February 06, 2018, 10:04:52 PM
Buck 110's little brother the 112 let's see them  :tu:

My dad bought this for me for my 13th birthday back in the early eighties. I picked this one over the regular one cause I thought the finger grooves were cool and I still do.  :tu:

The 112 has a great grip, even without finger grooves. Such a sweet little knife. Substantial, to be sure, but can ride in a pocket.

I bought this one at the Buck factory in Idaho. Nice people.

That was a really cool 13th birthday present. If I had gotten one of those at 13 it would have been a really big deal.

The 112 model is one knife that has been on my list.  Yet, to find one in any stores that I have found Buck knives.  Either they sell very fast, or retailers do not order, or Buck does not offer to distribution channel allowing any margin.

May have to order from factory, actually 2, one stock for EDC and one customized.

I like my 110, and love the 55.   The 112 should be equally lovable in my mits.

It's funny, I've spoken with a number of guys who find their way to the 112 and end up deciding it's their favorite knife. I get that. I really like 110's, but the 112 has this innate appeal. Very handy knife and easier to tote than a 110. And there is a subtle difference in the grip of the 112 that I find very appealing. You definitely need to give one a try.  :tu:

In 1981, when I was 30, a friend of mine wanted a black powder rifle I had, so I suggested that we go to the local gun shop and find something that he could buy to trade me for the rifle. When I saw the finger grooves on the Buck 112 I had to have it, so he bought it and swapped it for the rifle.

That's the rest of the story.

Cool story !

It would have been 1980 when I got mine, took a trip over to St. Paul to Joe's sporting goods. Knowing my dad they must of had a sale on to go all the way over there just for a knife.   :D

Here's an interesting one:

The steel is 5160. Scales are stabilized wood (probably Buck's Diamond Wood).

I'm a sucker for 5160. It isn't very stain resistant being a medium-carbon spring steel, but it sure seems to take an edge and is as tough as....an old Ford-150 leaf spring. Buck doesn't seem to use it much, but I'd kinda like to see some more of their 110's and 112's in 5160.

These 112's have great hand feel. And they are super little performers for their size. Old school, a little quaint, charming and reliable, they're the Hobbits of the Buck folder world. Love 'em.

Question: do they come in a non locking model? I'm guessing the blade is 75mm or less?  Is the type without the finger grooves common? Lovely lovely knives.

Oh, dear, Mags....

There's bad news: they do come with finger groves. And the blade, from bolster to pointy bit is 72mm.....

There's also good news: Buck is a safety-minded company and only make these with a safety lock.  :)

Good news: non finger groove available. Also 72mm is a legal length in the UK.

Bad news: not available in non locking so not UK legal.  ???

Need some assistance, please.  (I know there will several opinions too!)

I have a couple 112s in my cart on amazon, the also at Wally World.

First question, regarding blade type, clip point or drop point?

I like both as pictured here - (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180218/2c54eda64a688fbd181c4bdf0d963618.jpg) and I expect the 112 is also hallow grind.

Second is regarding scale material.
G10 is aluminum or other metal? Smooth or textured?  Could not tell by pictures.

Black wood, is this a type of wood or just a finish to the diamond wood or oak? The 2 most common.

I will want BOS treated steel, correct?

Thanks

Just to be clear I am posting pictures of a Buck 112 clip point and a drop point.

G10 is a high-pressure fiberglass laminate, a kind of composite material. It is extremely tough.

I would think that black wood should just be the stained Diamond wood

I personally prefer the clip blade, but you might prefer the drop point

The steel used in the Buck 112 will be BOS heat treat.(it just won't say it on the blade) The 420HC steel is BOS heat treated.

Justen Bock, the Product Development and Engineering Manager at Buck Knives explains

“Buck is a Market Leader in Edge Retention”
Of the many steels Buck uses, the most popular is its 420HC.  It’s not the most advanced or expensive steel but it is consistently praised for a performance boost owing to Paul Bos’ heat treat recipe. Bos, one of America’s foremost authorities on heat treating steel, has developed the ‘recipes’ used for many of Buck’s steels. “Buck is a market leader in edge retention thanks to our steel selections and heat treat process pioneered by Paul Bos,” says Bock. “[His] heat treating system has proven to be the best in the business.” Bos’ proprietary process is an industry secret, but it’s not exclusive to Buck Knives.

They only print it on the Custom Shop blades, but the BOS heat treat plant is in the Buck plant.

EDIT: VICMAN beat me to the 'enter' button, but I'll leave my similar comments below.

LoopCutter,

Tough choices here.

I've only had clip points, and I like 'em. Drop points look good, though. Might be task related or a matter of personal preference.
The clip point is the classic design. (see my 112 pictured above)

G-10 is a synthetic material like micarta. It's a non-metalic, fiberglass laminated with a resin. Very strong and tough. It can be textured, but Buck makes it fairly smooth.

I'm not sure about the Black wood. I suspect that it is a dyed or stained wood. I've never had an issue with Buck's wood scales, but if you live somewhere with big fluctuations in humidity, a synthetic or horn may have some advantage.

Buck does their own heat treating for the 420HC. I like what they get with their 420HC.

Paul Bos does the heat treat for their S30V and 5160. I love what they get with those steels. They cost more, but those are pricier steels.

Good luck with choosing! (Or, you can be stupid like me and just get a couple versions. But you do need at least one.  ;))

You guys need to stop starting threads like this...

And FYI:
A drop point has more material in it's spine near the tip. Therefore it's more supported and stronger.
It'll be less of a piercer though.

Well, you definitely need a 112 Ranger.

The Squire seems to be pretty close in size the the 55, from what I can see. But it lacks the 112's chunky feel in the hand. The 112's handle is about the same thickness as the 110. Which is a good thing.

I think the 112 actually feels chunkier because it is shorter. The 110 is long and elegant, an American Quarter Horse. The 112 is a hard-kickin' Missouri Mule.

This is embarrassing...my 55 has gone AWOL and I was just carrying it about a month ago.

In the mean time here is a comparison of the 501 Squire on top with a 503 Prince on the bottom.

The 503 is the same size as a 55

This is embarrassing...my 55 has gone AWOL and I was jsut carrying it about a month ago.

 :ahhh

I'm usually pretty easy going and calm. But nothing agitates me like not being able to find a knife.  :ahhh

I've lost a few knives in my day. As a result, when I can't remember where I left a knife, or put my hands on it after looking in two or three places, that panicky feeling starts to creep up.  :ahhh

Great collection Toolguy

I am looking for one at present, then I am impressed with the collections that are shared.  The pressure now to find that first one, the perfect first one;).

But then if not on the forum, I would have never knew I was needing a 112.

Yes, those are original inlays. Learned from the big-time Buck collectors that the first  Ranger versions built had micarta, then they switched to segua/shedua wood, later yet ebony.

Yup, I only learned myself a few years ago that Buck was using 440C and real ebony wood in the earlier 110/112 series knives. That got me interested and I purchased some examples, and eventually I found about the really early micarta 112s and even found one to buy. Wasn't exactly cheap but I do like it!  :D

Not being satisfied with the status quo is what motivates invention. In my case I just like tinkering with knives.I enjoy working on them to make them function more efficiently or modify them to fit a certain need or desire.

This one of those that I modified to satisfy that need for a more compact Buck 1112 Ranger.

These pictures should tell that story.

Could someone please explain why I'm checking out a topic from two months ago about a Buck 112 while my tool budget is at an all time low ... ?

And why do these Bucks have to look soooo nice ...  :ahhh

As a kid I had a fake Buck (next to my fake SAK  ::)).  That fake SAK was the main reason why, for a long time, I used to think that SAKs were cr*p and the only real tool was a Leatherman, until I got myself a real SAK.  So I just know that it's going to be the same with a real Buck (those fake ones can really "damage" the reputation of a brand for people who don't know much about tools).

Anyway, don't mind me, I'm going to stay drooling here for a while .

I thought about asking one of you guys in the U.S. to maybe help me get one straight from the U.S.  :-[.

But then I found one (new) over here for 75 Euro ($83), so I figured after shipping, customs fee and import tax they would have to be very cheap in the U.S. to make it a better deal than the one I get when I buy one locally

So my plan is to set aside whatever I can and try to get enough "tool-budget" around Christmas to get myself a Buck for Christmas (which sounds like a true classic Christmas gift  ;)).

Great looking Rangers everybody!! I own 4, and really want one (or a 110) with a stag handle, but they are crazy expensive and way above what I would pay for a knife!!  :P   One day I may find one at  a decent price!!

After the Chuck Yeager challenge (Vic. Executive)  I went straight back to the 112. Over the last year it became one of my favorite pocket carries.
I love its solid feel/grip in the hand while still being able to perform delicate tasks as well  :tu:
I prefer Buck's classic clip-point on the 112.

It really is a lovely bit of kit McS, mines rock solid, no play at all :tu:

The backspring feels a bit lighter than on my 110’s but still firm enough. With the lower weight and slimmer scales it does feel a little different in the hand but in a good way IMO

Being definitely slimmer is the obvious thing you notice but the micarta gives good grip and the clip isn’t an issue for me, lies flat in the hand, no major hot spots but you can feel that it’s there

It’s one of my all time favourite knives without a doubt

I sometimes do the same like TG on some knifes.
But generally I like the original angle Buck puts on to them, so I'm trying to match it (by optical assessment, not measuring).

I'll attach a great sharpening guide from Buck themselfes here  :hatsoff:

I acquired a few in April, went searching for a finger grooved handle and found a Ebony drop point, then BOTM drops with Carbon Fiber Scales and S35VN blade making it brother to my 250 Saunter, and added a Slim Grey because Buck had it discounted.

There are two basic models of the Slim Select.  The color variety made with nylon scales and have the short pocket clip, with 420HC blade steel.   The 2nd variety is called the Slim Select Pro, (what Nix says he has), Scales are different, Black is G10, the Tan and Green are Micarta, with S30V blade steel.  This is another varient, of this model a Pro+, G10 scales, Red Micarta liners and S35VN blade steel.

The LT version is the nylon scales, no liners, thick handle as a traditional, but very light.

I do not believe the Slim Select Pro, Pro+, or LT are being manufactured any longer.   The Plain Slim Selects are yet listed on the Buck Web site.  Some colors are offered at sale price till that color is gone.

IMHO, AWL models are very good blades, and built solid for hard use.  The Pro models are very good lookers as well with updated steel.  With pocket clip the right deep in pocket and fitted with thumbs the for one handed opening.

Thanks LoopCutter, appreciate your help  :tu:

I should have been more clear as I'm thinking about the nylon handled versions, I already have a slim select pro in green micarta (picture above)

You're quite right that the Pro's and LT's aren't being made anymore, but I've seen some LT's for sale locally about $15 cheaper than the current plain slim select

Since my post I've noticed that the LT's don't seem to have a thumb stud, (which leans me towards the slim select), the only other difference I see is the finish on the scales, but otherwise it sounds like they're very similar from what you say?

A RED Slim Select is a pocket rider almost everyday for PST 4 years.   I just acquired two Tans on Saturday less that 20.   And have maybe every color made except black for future needs.
Best value in cut technology.

Nice!

I'm not sure about the thumb stud. I think there is one on my Slim Shady Pro. Makes it quite modern feeling. But I'm never sure I need it and it can only get in the way. On the other hand, sometimes OHO is a nice feature.....

That's how I ended up with two Griptilians. First one had a thumbstud. And then I discovered the Sheepsfoot model without a stud......

The titanium thub studs from here...

https://www.flytanium.com/item/684/Titanium-Thumbstud-Kit-for (https://www.flytanium.com/item/684/Titanium-Thumbstud-Kit-for)

...are made for various Benchmade knifes and needed some filing unfortunately, because the whole in the blade was a millimeter too small and drilling it wider is not to my liking being it S30V...

At the end there was one full turn of screw available for the female part. But I could tighten it up just fine, and it works. I guess titanium is tougher after all. Still, I wanted to add some Loctite for peace of mind...

I like it much better than the original. It's smaller, appears to fit better, and is removable now...
