Title: Tilley Lamps
Post by: Smashie on March 12, 2017, 10:42:31 PM
After an absence for a few years now (on new lamps), Tilley has now found a new supplier for the pressure tank so complete lams are available again. Well they were on Friday, I guess they sold out since then. More lamps coming soon.

I love my Tilley lamps (even though one of them is a bit scary to light  :ahhh

I haven't got photo's of mine to hand but the UK meet attendees will vouch for the fact that there is a lot of flames and smoke lighting mine  :ahhh (I know how to fix it but I haven't killed my self with it yet).

It's a very old design paraffin/kerosene pressure lamp, they date back to 1813. Wiki article about them https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilley_lamp

I grew up using them.
Dad would get mad if I broke a mantle.
Looked for the little gas ones from Primus a couple years ago but couldn't get them locally.

I have a Primus one in pieces at the moment (the previous owner had been anything but kind to it) and my father had a phase where he used them a lot when I was in my teens. The can really light a place up! The mantles supposedly contains Thorium and the "radioactive boyscout" used them in his attempts at building a nuclear reactor in his shed.

I have my old tilley lamp hanging in my garage. I lost the meths pre-heater a long time ago so it hasn't been used in years.  Maybe it's time to look on evil bay for one and resurrect it.

The old mantles did but not anymore apparently, they also don't use the asbestos string to tie them on with

Also worth nothing that David Hahn, "The radioactive boy scout" passed away September last year
