Title: Help me choose a SAK to take on vacation!
Post by: boatman422 on December 15, 2018, 10:23:02 PM
Hey all,

I want to tap into the hive mind of the Swiss Army Knights! I will be travelling by plane on a two week vacation in a few days. I will be checking a bag, which allows me to choose a SAK (or two) to take with me for the duration. I will not likely find myself out in the wilderness, if that factors into choice of EDC.

I have narrowed my EDC palette down to a dozen full size SAKs. Have a look below  :) . My intention is pairing up a larger 91mm or 84mm model with either a 58mm classic, or the Wenger PTC. I also have a Leatherman PS4 that I was thinking would go well with an 84mm model (e.g. PS4 with the walker). Minimizing tool overlap has always been my goal with carrying two tools.

From left to right:

-111mm Outrider
- 91mm ~1991 Champion w/ plus scales
-91mm Troubleshooter
-93mm OC Pioneer
-Gap where my 93mm Farmer would be (in for repair :( )
-91mm Yeoman Mod with 58mm backlayer tools (featured here: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=79203.0)
-91mm ~1973 Standard w/ clip point blade
-84mm ~1961-1968 Small Climber
-84mm modern Waiter
-84mm ~1973 Tourist w/ clip point blade
-84mm modern Walker
-74mm Executive

On the top row, we have the aforementioned Leatherman PS4 and Wenger PTC. I also have a Stayglow classic that will factor in as well!

I'd like to keep the carry load down to two tools total. The combination of the above give a myriad of possibilites. I need help! Thanks in advance

The Pioneer would be my pocket carry choice. It is sturdier and thinner than two layer 91mm knives, and you already have scissors on your Classic. If you carry a bag at all times, then either the Champion or the Troubleshooter. But overall, I'd choose the Pioneer. :tu:

Have a great vacation! :)

Nice collection, by the way! You have something for every occasion and some relative rarities. 8)

I don't know your needs or preferences, but here are my thoughts:
The first three SAKs on your list are too big for me personally.  The Pioneer or anything to its right is fine for me.
I'd lump the 74mm Executive with the Classic/PTC/PS4 myself.  So 84mm to 93mm is my sweet spot for a SAK.
I personally would just pack the Small Climber, fit's all my needs.  If you wanted a companion for it, I'd go with the PS4.

I vote for the 84mm Climber!  :climber:

I'd probably take the Yeoman mod and the PS4.  But then I'd worry that I'd lose the Yeoman, so maybe the 84mm Walker and PS4 would be less worrisome.

Ditch the ones that have a sentimental value or are hard to replace, and choose from the leftovers - easy to be replaced ones - in case of loss.
Enjoy your trip!

Well...take one you do not mind if it gets missing. Something you are not attached to.  Put a lock on the check in luggage. That should help and I truly hope it makes it there and back! Especially jewelry!

This makes sense to me! I think I'll use caution and narrow it down to the ones that can be replaced if necessary.

I suggest you buy a Compact. Didn't see one on the list.

Unless you plan to be doing outdoor tasks, it’s tough to beat the Waiter + Classic combination.

If you only take one or two, the rest will be jealous. You'll really mess up morale.

That being said, you're checking a bag. Another vote for look to see which you can stand to never see again. Which would be most of these, including your StayGlow Classic

You're taking a PS4 already, so you have meh scissors already. From this list, the modern Waiter if you need a glasses screwdriver. If not... You know you want to be buy a Tinker. :P

I thought I would update this thread with my final choice: the OC Pioneer and Wenger PTC. I thought a good combination of sturdiness and utility.

Waiting at the airport - safe travels to all who are doing the same on this busy holiday weekend!

With awl the previous caveats, I'd go for the Small Climber (just 'cause I like the big Climber).
