Title: Powerlock 30-day challenge
Post by: Nix on June 23, 2018, 12:09:18 AM
Day 00:

I just got a Powerlock today. Since I recently bailed out of another challenge, I thought I'd pick myself up, knock the dust off, and try again. This challenge is open to anyone who wants to join in, but, and sorry for the short notice, it starts tomorrow. Still, if you have a SOG "Power" multitool, join in.

Here are my tools for the challenge:

This Powerlock has a 1/4" drive, so I thought I'd test it out with a 1/4", 6-pt socket and a small selection of bits. The bits may change over the course of the challenge, depending on what I'm doing. But the Powerlock and Vic Classic will remain my constant tools for the next 30-days.

Why the Vic Classic?  Because #SAKMC.  :SAKnight:  And there may be times when I can't easily carry a full-sized mulittool and will therefore have at least a Classic in my pocket.

Rules:

1. Post a pic of the SOG multitool everyday for 30 days.
2. Attempt to use each tool in the SOG multitool at least once.
3. Only resort to using other tools, e.g. Vic Classic, is the SOG tool is unavailable or unsuitable for the task at hand. Provide a reason if the SOG tool is not used for a task, e.g. "The SOG doesn't have tweezers...."
4. Pictures may be posted retrospectively, but must be taken every day of the challenge. E.g., a snap from the 14th day may be posted on the 18th day, but that picture had to be taken on the 14th day.
5. Participants must have fun. If a participant is not having fun, he or she must disqualify themselves.

OK, fairly simple rule set, and a straight forward challenge.  Please join in this SOG challenge if you are the least bit inclined. Feel free to start a little late. I have to start now because....#manychallengeslittletime.

#Posting so I can follow.

How about that plier head on the PowerLock?

It is awesome how fast SOG acted on the PAD disappointment! The PowerLock is a fantastic tool, and one a lot of people swear by, in the MT community.
What toolset does your PL have? I think there are four toolset variations on the new PL, but am not sure.

Hey, G-man, I'm a newbie to the SOG MT world....although I've now had a Paratool for 20+ years!

Tomorrow I'll put up a post on this particular Powerlock and it's toolset.  Only 30 days to go, but I have a feeling I still have plenty to learn!  :tu:

Day 01:

I'll cover the tool set I've got on this Powerlock first thing today:

Pliers with wire cutters. Nice needle nose design with fine tips. Tips meet precisely. Obviously this model has SOG's compound leverage.
Crimper integrated into the plier head on the handle side of the pivot points. I don't typically use a crimper, but, you never know.....

Handle 1 tools:
Half-serrated knife blade: Blade seems a bit thin, but is sharp. I'd prefer a plain edge blade, but I think this is fine for a multitool.
Scissors: The design of these scissors is a bit bulky, but they might still be useful....except there is significant laxity in the pivot point. This may be another case of interesting design, porr execution.
Cap-lifter with medium flat driver (5mm): Looks well made and like it will do well.
1/4" Driver: This is one of the more interesting and, for me, exciting options in the Powerlock. It is a bit odd that there is a half-stop (90º) on this 'blade'. When the driver is deployed at the 90º angle, the handle cover cannot be closed and, since it opens inward, the handles can't be closed. This isn't a problem per se, but it does highlight one small disadvantage of inward opening tools.

Handle 2 tools:
Saw: Again, the saw is a wee bit shorter than it really needs to be. It's cutting length is about the same as a Vic Farmer's saw.
File: The file seems pretty good, but you guys know I'll be testing this!
Can opener with small flat driver: This seems fairly well designed and made. I expect it to work well.
Reamer/awl: more of a spike. It'll be interesting to see how this performs.
Philips driver: nice length, crisp edges, long shank. Looks like it will be a performer.
Flat driver: about 7mm, gives another nice option. Looks to be strong enough for light prying.

Might be possible to use the 1/4" driver in some limited ways at the half stop leaving everything open:

Day 01 (continued):

Task one: open a bag of dog food for the household fiend. The bag in question is made of plastic and is easily cut with our Fiskars kitchen scissors. Could the Powerlock's scissors handle this task?

Fortunately the Powerlock comes equipped with a sharp knife.....

Day 01 (continued):

As W noted, it was a bit disappointing that the scissors didn't work out. More than a little disappointing, I really wanted some functional scissors. So, a bit more testing.......

I tried cutting string.....no luck. The looseness of the pivot point just allows the string to fold over.

So, more testing with 15# and 30# mono filament fishing line. The 15# test line folded over. The 30# was a bit stiffer and the scissors mostly mangled the line without cutting, but after about 10 attempts and a some really quick action on the scissors, I cut the line once.

Paper had equally dismal results. I could not cut newspaper or an envelope. Some card stock could be clipped, but I could not cut out a small square from the corner. Once the card stock became weakened from earlier cuts, the material just folded and wouldn't be cut.

So, the scissors, one of the big draws of this model, are miserable and functionally useless.

I may try to peen the pivot point and see if I can tighten them up.

Day 01 (continued):

I find manipulating the tool covers on the handles a bit awkward. I think I'll get used to this feature, but it does slow me down. And the tool sets clump when any one blade is opened. Managing the clumped tools with the cover open, but still sort of in the way seems cumbersome.

I'm not sure how this happened, but I was trying to open the 1/4" and got a big clump of tools out. In trying to sweep the 1/4" fully open, I ended up nicking my finger of the serrated blade.

Goods news: the serrated blade is sharp.

More good news: I didn't cut myself badly.

Bad news: Mrs Nix became cross with me for getting blood everywhere. Small nick, but it sure did bleed!

Photo (wee bit graphic for blood and not terribly interesting, but still, it's a challenge and these things need to be documented):

Now....what to use to peen the pivot?

Dull nail?  Metal punch?

I think my peening hammer would be too cumbersome. But....it couldn't hurt.....

In answer of my own question, I used both a peening hammer and a metal punch to peen the pivot. This seemed to help...a lot. It might need a bit more peening, but I'll test it a bit as it is now.

Nice thoughts so far, Nix! The PowerLock is a quirky thing, but you may end up liking it once you have learned the ins & outs of it. It is a 20yo design that hasn't changed much. :ahhh
Interesting that the one they sent you has scissors. Or by chance, none of my PLs have scissors. Mine mostly have the V-Cutter or two separate blades(one pe and one se on the older models). My PowerGrab has the same scissors and they only work well if you are right handed(naturally pushing the handle where the blades meet). I thought about peening them, but the Grab is a collection piece, so it would be pointless. But, seeing as you'll be using the PL a lot, peening may be the easiest option.

For sure, G-man. I'm a user, so peening seemed like the right move. I may peen the pivot a bit more, but so far, my initial job seems to have been effective.

But, hey, this is only Day 1 of the challenge for me!  :tu:

Day 01 (yes, this is still Day 1):

Mrs Nix got a new washer and dryer today. A number of tasks needed to be accomplished along the way.

First, I removed a vinyl stop that prevented the glass doors from opening fully (sorry for the poor focus), Philips driver worked well.  :tu:

Then, the dryer vent needed to be removed.

I used the 1/4" drive with a bit extender to reach back and loosen the hose clamp:

Tried to use the pliers to loosen the hot & cold water supplies for the washer, but the space was just too confined. In the end I used some slip joint pliers to loosen the hoses up. This is no hit on the Powerlock, just a realistic limitation due to a large 'nut' in a confined space.  :tu:

Yes, that is the raggedy band-aid from the earlier cut seen in the top of the frame.  Time to replace that band-aid........

Used the scissors to snip some mint for a cucumber salad for lunch.

The recent peening seems to have the scissors running better.  :tu:

Day 02 (continued):

Two days, two blood lettings.

This time I was trying to use the Powerlock's wirecutter to snip a thick zip-tie that was in an awkward and confined spot. I struggled to get the jaws around the zip-tie, using my off hand to get the material in position. When I had my chance, I gave the Powerlock a good squeeze. Sure enough, the wire cutters snipped the zip-tie, but the jaws slammed shut and the ring finger of mind off hand got snapped by the sharp, precise tips of the pliers.

Wire cutters did well, and I should have been more careful with my hand position. (In my defense, this was in a tricky spot with limited ability to maneuver.)  Maybe this qualifies for a Mr Pinchy badge?

Seriously. It looks as if he PL is working out quite well, as far as working as-advertised, so far.

No Pinchy badge though.  :D That particular badge is one you really don't want. A Gerber multi-plier linear palm bleed is one of the worst MT injuries. :ahhh

The SOG scissors are not awesome..  I have pretty much concluded that the only scissors I will ever use on an MT or SAK are those made by Victorinox.   So every day I have with me at least the teeny scissors on a Manager or the larger ones on the Explorer, or both - irrespective of what MT I might be carrying.  In my experience, no other maker comes close to Victorinox scissors.

Its pretty lame, honestly, that the scissors on a new PowerLock would not cut anything.  What's going on at SOG?  Really - how can they keep shipping things that don't work?

I do otherwise appreciate the PowerLock - minus the scissors - though the tool covers or "wings" are not a very elegant design.  As I said in the PowerAccess Deluxe Challenge, the SOG's compound leverage pliers are the "best" in the business, albeit with no replaceable cutters.  The PowerLock's blades and drivers perform admirably and pretty much on par with the other top brands.  I do like how smoothly the PowerLock opens, and I like the polished finish.

So overall, I like the PowerLock and PowerAssist except for the scissors, and they are MTs that a "working man" could rely on every day.  I do, though, still consider SOG to be a "second tier" maker, which has a lot of improvement to undergo before competing with Victorinox and Leatherman.  At $49 shipped on Amazon Prime, the PowerLock is budget priced and you get a solid MT for the money.

You could always give it a nose job on a bench grinder, but then you give up the needle nose functionality.

Now that's usin' yer Noodle!   :tu:   Nice snaps.   :tu:

I do kinda like the reach one gets with needle nose pliers. And I don't have any gripes with the SOG pliers at this point. I'll continue to point out situations (as come up) where the needle nose either is better for the job or isn't. The whole reason we have a diversity of knives, pliers, and drivers, is that each has it's virtue....and limitation. No one multitool is going to be perfect for every situation.

I'm not a working man....unless working at being lazy is a job...and I tend to look for multitools that will be good companions for EDC, fishing, camping, hunting, etc..... For my life, needle nose makes a bit more sense. I think.     But I've never carried a blunt nose multitool, so I'm certainly open to changing my mind. I do have a birthday coming up.........  ;)

Day 04:

Making Broccoli Soup for dinner this evening. SOG Powerlock's blade got pressed into kitchen duty.

About to get the El Peacent treatment:

Mayhem completed:

The Powerlock worked well here. The blade is sharp and slices well. This task did highlight a disadvantage of having an internally folding knife blade (as opposed to outside opening knife): since the knife faces inward, the second handle prevents the blade from making full-length contact with a cutting board, except when working off the very edge. To make many of these cuts, I had to use a drawing or pulling cut with the tip of the knife. Not a big deal, but definitely not as agile as a regular paring knife.

In a pinch,  I have used inboard toolset blades with the pliers deployed and handles open to facilitate flush surface cutting. The PL is not terrible that way. But, to be honest, I don't like MT blades in general (inboard or outboard). It is like a knife with brick handle. :ahhh

With SOG's compound leverage, it's a bit tougher to use the inboard knife with the pliers opened, but that too is doable.   :tu:

Day 05:

I got the chance to head up into the hills to do a little fishing today.......

Really nice day and not too hot. I headed for a stream where I've been successful before. I knew the water would be high and feared it would be muddy from all the recent rain, but it looked pretty good:

While I remembered the Powerlock, I forgot to bring the insect repellent. This would prove to be a major oversight......

Because I anticipated high water and muddy conditions, I decided to bring a spinning rod. This was not the best choice. While I got a few nice casts in and hoped for a result.....I got skunked.

Part of my failure was due to poor gear selection, but part was also due to an active and continual running battle with a horde of mosquitoes. I tried to cover up, but they exploited any opening. When they decide to try crawling up my nose, I made a tactical withdrawal and tried to make it back to the truck.

On my way, I ran into a barbed wire entanglement, clearly designed to entrap the unwary fisherman, leaving said poor soul to the merciless mosquitoes.

I have to say the Powerlock was impressive in cutting the wire fairly easily. I don't think I've had another multitool cut double-stranded barbed wire as easily as the Powerlock.

Once cleared of the barbed wire, I made my way back to the truck and headed home. Bruised, bloodied, and humiliated, but now with a new bottle of DEET.   :salute:

Great question! Thanks for the reminder.   :tu:

I guess I didn't post up a pic of that test. But, YES!

These snips cut 44#, 30#, 15#, 10#, and.....slender 3# mono-filament fishing line.

I figured that the bigger stuff would not be an issue. I doubted the 3# would be cut, as it is soooooo fine and flexible. But the snips cut that quite nicely, too.

So far, the Powerlock's wire cutters have been excellent.  :tu:

I hear ya.

The PAD is packed with features and tools. That's nice.  And the compound mechanism of the PAD is more elegant than the Powerlock's shrouded approach. That's nice, too.

In my case, if the quality of the PAD was up at the Powerlock level, I think the PAD might be the superior tool, but right now, I like the Powerlock much better for it's fit, feel, and function (yeah, I did have some issues with the scissors, but a bit of peening seems to have improved those.).

I feel that it's like SOG should learn a thing or two from Victorinox ,

1 - you should wait enough (1, 5 or 10 years) to put out and release a new tool that beats or improves your previous offerings,  :mn: if the tool you're releasing doesn't have an alternative use or completely different function than the previous ones, and it's just meant to be the evolution of those, it should be better or at least improved in some obvious upgrades  :multi:

I feel like SOG is worsening their lineup, not the opposite, and they trust the "lots of new releases in short time" model of business to be successful,
thus making quality and reputation suffer  :ahhh

2 - learn how to make scissors if you're gonna put them on your tools! In all sizes and versions, scissors should cut things!!!

Day 07:

Did a little cut testing today:

The Powerlock's blade did a nice job with all these cuts. However, when I examined the edge afterward, I noted that the edge had rolled, quite significantly. Not good.

I re-cut the same materials with a Buck 110 with a 420HC blade and got similar results, but WITHOUT edge rolling.

This suggests to me that while the SOG's blade geometry is good, they haven't made the most of their blade materials and heat treatment.

 ***sigh***

The good side of soft steel is that it sharpens up easily.

This blade is ground thin and is very flexible. It's not a 'hard use' blade to be sure. Feels like I could snap it easily (with my gorilla-strength grip  :viking:).

So, I suspect that's why the steel is soft and the edge rolls: a harder steel would be more prone to snapping. (And more returns to the warranty department.)

I'm going to keep an eye on the knife blade, here. Right now, I'm a bit underwhelmed, despite some decent cutting test results.

Day 08:

No uses today....so far. I will say that at this point in the challenge I have become quite used to having the Powerlock on my belt. It does not feel as big or heavy to me as a Leatherman ST300.

Maybe that just means I need to do a ST 300 challenge......

I've had similar experiences with SOG MT blade steel. It is about as soft as Vic blade steel. I don't mind though, because like you said, less likely to snap. And, like a SAK, it is crazy easy to sharpen. :)
LM and Gerber blades are not forgiving at all when flexed. I know this the hard way.

Day 09:

Explanation: I was transferring some lentils from a bag to a better storage system (recycled jar). I used the Powerlock's scissors to snip off the corner of the bag, so as to use the clipped corner as a funnel. Scissors (now peened) worked fairly well and cut through 98% of the bag before it folded over. Last 2% was torn off with the bag clamped in the scissors.

Not perfect, but OK-ish.

The ST-300 is just a tad thicker than the powerlock.  I've pocket carried both and don't notice much difference in how they carry.  The scissors in my powerlock don't seem to have any issues. They're sharp and tight. I might have just gotten lucky and got the one that was assembled perfectly, right after the coffee break at the factory.

Day 11:

Back home now and no significant adventures. I was really happy to see there is still some snow lingering up on the peaks of the taller mountains. Snow is water, and water is life. So snow in July means water in the creeks and streams, and life in the rivers and lakes. And that puts a smile on my face.  :tu:

I did struggle a bit with the scissors again. I'll try to peen them some more in the next day or two. Otherwise, the Powerlock just rode along for the journey. Awlways nice to have a multi close at hand.

Time for a G&T now, so......

Oh, here's another funny thing:

SOG sent me a second Powerlock with scissors. I'm not sure how that happened. Maybe when I returned my PowerAccess Deluxe it triggered an exchange that resulted in my being sent a second Powerlock (w/scissors).

As a result of this fiasco I'll be doing a GAW of a NIB Powerlock with Scissors at the end of this challenge. I'm going to keep this GAW quiet and just limit it to those MTO'ers who comment in this thread. So, if you've commented here already, you are in. If you would rather not have a NIB Powerlock, don't comment in this thread. If you want to give a Powerlock with scissors a try, make at least one post in this thread: anything from a popcorn smiley to a lengthy discourse on your love of SOG Powerlocks. No need to keep a list, I'll figure it out at the end of the challenge.

This has just been too funny.     :multi:

If you break your current PL, you won't need to send it in for replacement.  :like:

Not sure how I feel about them sending two PLs out though. Only because it seems as if one hand doesn't know what the other is doing. That sort of thing ends up costing the consumers from what I've seen. One of the possible reasons SOG's MTs are more expensive than the U.S.A made LMs and Gerbers(in general regarding staple-models).
It worked out since the PAD was quite a bit more expensive than a PL though. Definitely got your money's worth.

So, the tools in the handle are covered by a.....tool cover. At first this seemed like an inelegant solution to covering the handles with smoother metal when operating the pliers. And it seemed like a bit of a hassle to open the pliers, open the tool cover, select a tool (from the clump of tools), close the cover, close the pliers, and then use the tool.

If you counted, that's 5 steps to access a cap lifter.

If you have a boy scout knife, only one step is required.

So, at first it seemed like a bit of a hassle. Now I have become more accustomed to the elaborate process and don't seem to mind. I'm not really any more efficient in getting out a tool, but now I have a bit of an idea which handle a tool is in and so I'm opening and closing the tools covers less. And it's kind of relaxing to flip the covers open and closed.

And the tool covers serve as a second 'lock'. In fact, I think the locks are really optional with the tool covers in place. With the covers closed, there is no way for a tool to close on the user.....

...except for the scissors. The base of the scissors stands a bit proud and the tool cover cannot close fully when the scissors are deployed. They can lock open, but the tool cover doesn't close up all the way.

***sigh***

Which tester didn't notice that design flaw? How did an engineer miss that?

I'm starting to enjoy this SOG more with time and use, but, I must say, SOG, as a company, really baffles me.   ???

Hey Nix,

Remember how you independently discovered being able to flick open the SOG pliers?
There is a trick TP and I use for accessing tools in less steps without removing the covers that is similat in its' unique MT nature.

When you open the handles to deploy he pliers, pull the cover on the side you're accessing open with the handle half. All tools, even the long ones, will pull out with the cover propped on the pliers. This also keeps the tool from opening all the way inadvertently during tool access. Once you get the hang of it, accessing tools in less steps is a cake walk. :tu:

You can see how the dimple in the cover doesn't quite snap into the detent in the handle because the base of the scissors is just a bit wide/tall/proud.

When you sent back the Power Access Deluxe did you specify that you were so disappointed in them that you didn't want them back? Or, are you expecting that back sometime as well?  Sometimes the shipping department just puts the wrong label on a package. Other times there may have been a customer service manager trying to keep you happy after you were so disappointed in the PAD.  I have to say that SOG usually has pretty good customer service and I wouldn't put it past them to just send you an extra tool to use while they fix the PAD.  Bonus!

Alan,

My experience to date is that SOG has been very willing and interested in trying to make me a happy customer. Good, nay, great customer support.

I was very disappointed in the PowerAccess Deluxe. I sent it back in exchange for one (1) Powerlock with scissors. Somehow I ended up with two (2). I do NOT expect the PowerAccess to be returned to me. And, I hope it is not. My PowerAccess was a poor example of a multitool and I think I would have ended up junking it. Other PowerAccess owners have had better experiences with their individual examples. Me, not.

So, it would seem that SOG has overachieved in terms of replacing my PowerAccess. While I'd like to think this is a result of an effort to be sure a customer is satisfied, I suspect it is the result of the left hand not communicating with the right hand. Or something like that.

Regardless, SOG have done a great job in replacing a poor quality multitool (from my perspective) with one that seems--so far in my experience--a bit better.

This new Powerlock is not without faults, and there are still two weeks left in my 30-day challenge. I'm interested to see how my perception of SOG's products continues to develop as the challenge progresses. Nevertheless, I'm completely done with e PowerAccess Deluxe. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I'm feeling more optimistic about the Powerlock right now.

Sorry to be so frank, but there is my view, based on one (1) experience with the PowerAccess.  :salute:

Thought you might like to see how little SOG has changed the PowerLock since 1998. Aside from the pliers and gear covers, most implements are similar or exactly the same. The handles are slightly different, but identical in concept/execution  as well. This my only new PowerLock, and it has a different tool loadout, but it gives an idea.
The older PL is a pre-pat #(likely 1998) and the newer one is a 2018 model with v-cutter, instead of scissors.

On the other side of that coin (metaphorically, regarding us on MT.o, testing the designs and giving input back to the MT makers), we could also conclude, that we may never reach any kind of consensus on what is best. For example: there is significant amount of members here who claim the Vic Spirit is "MT perfection", but there is also a significant portion of us who believe otherwise. The old saying that "all MTs, in essence, are a compromise" seems to be a fact.

The best case scenario leaves us with a tool, that maybe, half of us would like.

I am just brain farting here. :ahhh

The older PL is a pre-pat #(likely 1998) and the newer one is a 2018 model with v-cutter, instead of scissors.

hey GLBM you beat me at it again, as I was just going to comment on Nix's post from DAY 13:

"Day 13:
Carried the Powerlock in the back pocket of my jeans. Actually worked fairly well, no issues, and I may try carrying it this way a bit more. A pocket caddy might be a good idea as well. "

and I was going to tell him "you're lucky that you got a new PL with gear cover,a s if you tried to pocket carry one of the older models you'd realise how awkward and painful a multitool can be  :D
I can talk from experience as my first PL didn't have those covers and that shredded all the pouches , sheaths and textiles where it was carried,  it hung up and got stuck and it ripped and tore them  ::), I can't imagine what it'd do in a pants pocket moving around and so  :ahhh :o

SOG should advertise "We include mediocre scissors, but Leatherman scissors fit better". :D

"...and they also cut better too"

El Peacent has called the Powerlock a 'beast'. Well......all things are relative...right?

that Trailmaster is a very nice piece  :like: :like: and that wrapping will prevent the Kraton from wearing out too soon and peeling away, a common issue with Cold Steel's rubbery handles.  :P Is your knife in Carbon V?

Day 14:

Decided to test the file today......

First got out my old beater axe.

And found that both the single cut and double cut sides of the file just skated off the hard cutting edge. This is a fail.

I tested the two sides and the skinnier 'saw' side on the heel of the axe (softer) and found they would bite in to some degree. So, I think this is more an issue of poor hardening than anything else. However, I'm not too impressed by the way the file's lands and grooves were cut.

So then the question became: "what else will it work on?"

I had a recently sharpened lawn mower blade that still had a fine burr on the edge. The single cut side was able to take this burr off. So that is kinda handy.

The double cut side did a decent--if limited--job of rasping off the sharp corner of a scrap piece of hard Maple. That was nice, too.

The 'saw' edge was able to cut a notch into the same block of Maple. And with a bit of effort, it started cutting a notch in a 20d nail. The double cut side was able to scratch up the nail as well, so it might be able to sharpen some softer metals. Which is something, I suppose.

Overall, the file is lame and not terribly useful, but I could envision it being pressed into service in some odd situations.

Clearly further testing is indicated......

Day 14 (continued):

Used the 1/4" drive and a Allen Hex bit to install some homemade wooden scales on my BK7.

The 1/4" drive is a neat feature of this and other SOG multi's. I do wish my 1/4" bit adapter were magnetized and held the bits more securely. The SOG has a small spring clip to help the 1/4" driver to 'snap' into the adapter, but it's fairly easy for the the hex bit to fall out, if so guided by gravity's mischievous hand.

The Powerlock fits neatly into the accessory pouch of the BK7's sheath. Might try carrying it this way for a day hike or camping trip.

Decided to share a piece of delicious chocolate with oranges and almonds with Mrs Nix this evening. Obviously, breaking it cleanly in half was fairly important.

I used the awl to score the chocolate bar in half (more or less) and then snap it cleanly. One of the awl uses Mrs Nix really appreciates.

Day 15:

I peened the scissors a bit more and today I got the chance to try 'em out. Plastic bags have been a real challenge for the scissors in the past. Today I'm soaking some beans, so the scissors had to meet it's nemesis.

At first it was a bit of a struggle, but then I realized that the scissors don't cut very well at the pivot point, but do cut fairly nicely closer to the tips. Once I realized that, I was able to make repetitive snips with the tip-half of the scissors and the bag was defeated.

A victory of sorts......

There isn't much play in the scissors now. And the scissors are mostly functional for my purposes. I think I'm going to follow the old saw: "Better is the enemy of good."

I'm going to call these scissors "good enough" and not risk messing them up at this point.

If further use dictates that I peen them some more, I'll hazard that, but for right now.......best to leave well enough alone, I think.

Not much going on today, but I did cut the lawn. Before hand, I touched up the mower's blade. The Powerlock's file actually did fairly well in tidying up the edge. After the file, I hit the mower blade with a diamond rod and then got to cutting.

Nice to see the file came through on the mower blades. The newer PL file isn't good, but it isn't bad like the PAD file either. The older "round end" file is a bit better, but for some reason, SOG has never made a "good" file. Their best files are mediocre to be honest.

You could order one of the older round files from the MT.o store. It would drop in without an issue. The older one has a bigger usable area for sure.

Day 17:

Messed around with testing the awl and Phillips driver today.

Used the awl to drill a pilot hole for a standard wood screw:

Awl did a fairly good job with this task.

Next I tried driving the wood screw into the 2x4:

I drove the screw about 1/2 way in. At that point, the resistance led to the driver twisting, flexing, and popping out of the screw head.  I then used a standard 1pt Phillips screw driver to drive the screw in a bit further, but it, too, started popping out. I'd say the Powerlock's Phillips worked well as compared to a standard driver, although I did notice significant flexing of the blade in the handle and the handle in the frame, all of which led to the driver tip disengaging from the screw. i.e. 'popping out'.

Lastly, I used the Powerlock to remove the screw from the 2x4. This was fairly tough, but the Powerlock did well and accomplished the job.

The driver tip did get chewed up a bit, but still looks entirely functional. I don't think it would be happy with repeated hard use like this, but it accomplished what I set out to test.

Title: Re: Powerlock 30-day challenge

That looks to be a #2 phillips head wood screw. Please set me straight if I am delusional. The SOG phillips is best used for smaller, #1 phillips screws, but if you grind the driver tip down a bit and put a sharper edge on the four driver edges, it works quite a bit better on #2 screws.

Title: Re: Powerlock 30-day challenge
Post by: Nix on July 10, 2018, 04:09:50 PM
G-man, I think you are right. It's probably a #2 Phillips woodscrew. I just grabbed it out of a box of screws, so I'm not absolutely sure, but a #2 Phillips fits it fairly well.  I'll confess to not always being fussy about the Phillips driver I pick up to use on a Phillips head screw. And, if all you have is a multitool........

I do like the way the Vic Spirit's Phillips driver is formed to work with #1 and #2 Phillips screws, while not being perfect for either.

All in all, I was satisfied with the way the Powerlock's driver worked here.  :tu:
Title: Re: Powerlock 30-day challenge

The Vic #1\#2 Phillips driver, found on most of their tools, are fantastic for all medium duty screwing tasks , from my observations.
My Vic explorer was probably involved in rewiring several thousand lamp\chandeliers\sconces at my last job. The SOG #1 Phillips is not a good shape for working on in-between screws or #2s. The driver tip does have enough meat on it to reshape it closer to the Vic shape.  :)

Went fishing on the lake with a buddy today. Packed some stainless tools along with the Powerlock:

Here's a shot from the lake:

The white dot in the picture is a pelican. Pelicans are awlways a good sign!  :tu:

We found a small inlet and worked that area pretty well.

The mosquitoes were out again today, but this time I remembered my DEET spray. ....and the fish trembled.....

We actually did OK. We each landed two small Walleye. I had a big trout on the line, but he made a magnificent jump and threw the hook. Yeah, the big one got away.......

SOG Powerlock came in handy for crimping shot, crimping hook barbs, cutting line, and removing fish hooks from the fish (no fishermen were hooked during this outing.).

My buddy had forgotten his pliers ( but remembered his ancient, rusty, Imperial "Camper", a copy of the Spartan. A lame copy. He borrowed the Powerlock to pull his fish hooks. He thought they Powerlock was great.

A hot day, but a fun day. And always nice to land a few fish.

The Charge is my usual multi for fishing trips. Easy to clip in a pocket or carry in a sheath, and nice one handed access to a knife (if needed). However, the Powerlock served well. I still find fumbling around with the covers a bit of a nuisance, but the pliers sure are quick to deploy.

I carried the PL in the belt sheath and it worked well for me.

Because the knife can be slow to deploy, I carried the Spydie Salt clipped in a pocket for quick access in a potential crisis: tangled boat line, hooking Nessie, etc..... Whenever I'm around ropes, lines, leashes, etc, I like to have a knife readily at hand.  :tu:

The PL, combined with a fixed-blade or OHO knife would seem to make a good fishing combo.  :tu:

Yes, seems easy to remove the covers, they just snap into place. But the exposed edges of the handles and tools are then less comfortable when using the nice pliers....... Yes, I'm being fussy. Maybe that's because I've used a nicely thought-out Victorinox Swisstool.

Day 21 (continued):

Not a real use, but tested the saw on a damaged limb from an Aspen tree:

Saw worked fairly well. teeth are aggressive and cut well. I noticed a slight tendency for the blade to wander a bit, but for a multi, it worked well.

Limitations here are the the saw faces inward and the handle limits it's ability to access some materials (same for awl inward-facing multis), and the short length of the saw. There is plenty of space in the handle for an additional 5-6mm of saw blade.

A longer saw blade might interfere with the handle cover, but the handle cover could also be made longer, thereby accommodating slightly longer tools. I suppose shorter tools use less metal which saves production costs. Looks like SOG again chose to build a less capable multi in order to save a some money and offer their tool at a lower price. Feels like a case of less expensive being the same as cheap.

So, just for you, my dear W, I removed the covers from the Powerlock and then compared the comfort of the Swisstool, Super Tool, and Powerlock. I ranked them in terms of comfort from left (best) to right (least comfy):

It's a nice comparison shot for these 'heavy-duty' multis. The Swisstool was the most comfortable by far. And the Supertool was still more comfortable than the Powerlock. Why?

Look at the comparison shot of the edges:

You can see the the Supertool (middle) has rounded the edges of the handles where possible, and the tools are a bit better covered. The handle material on the Powerlock (right) is thinner and sharper. So, with a good grip, the Powerlock cuts into the hand more.

Now, with the covers back in place, the Powerlock is neck and neck in terms of comfort with the Swisstool.

So, I'm keeping the covers on and accepting inconvenience in favor of comfort.  :tu:

While I had the tools out, I compared saws.

The shot is a bit deceiving because the handles aren't lined up. I tried to line up the ricassos, but it looks like I shorted the SOG a tad. I'm not sure if that's a distortion of the camera or I bumped the SOG prior to the shot.

Nevertheless, you can see the SOG's saw is short compared to the other multi's saws. SOG had the space to get it's saw to be the same length as Leatherman's--the handles are about the same length. But...no.

While the Leatherman's saw looks a bit longer than the Swisstool saw, the Swiss tool is the clear winner here because there is more usable saw blade since the blade opens outward and there is no handle to get in the way.

I think the LM still has more usable saw blade. Not much. You will hit the stop on the saw blade first before you hit the handle. Also, you can use the saws with the tool open, keeping the handle out of the way.

Nice to see the different models of MTs
With the handles I was looking at the old Supertool
And they haven’t got the rounded edges
If I had the Powerlock I would leave the covers on as well  :tu: :like:

Thanks for the pics, Nix!

I am not sure, why in 20+ years, SOG couldn't have just updated the saw and blades to be longer. They changed the tooth count in the 90s, but left it the same length.
I know they were trying to make all their tools fit the PP, PPP, PL, PAssist, and SwitchPlier; but it really wouldn't have taken much to have a longer saw blade available at some point for the PL and PA.

I really believe that they've used the same template (piece) of their original saw, which I think was in the PowerPlier,  and they decided to use it on the Powerlock, where it looks a bit short,

compared to most other manufacturers SOG seems to make short, flimsy tools to put in their huge, tank Multis,   ???
with the exception of the PA and Blacktip, I would say the same of their blades

Thank you for the photos, TP!

The saw looks so silly in the BlackTip.

Does your PowerPlier have the saw with fine teeth? Mine does, and the amount of effort to modify the tooling to the newer-style "bigger" teeth would have been a good opportunity to design a new saw especially for the PL. They could have just used the old machinery to make finer-tooth saws for the PP, PPP, and ParaTool. :ahhh

Day 22:

Did a bit of yard work this morning. Used the Powerlock to open some bags of compost.......

This evening...and El Peacent has been expecting this, I know...it was roast chicken time!

(Mrs Nix loves roast chicken.)

The Tomahawk is there in case the feeble-feeling blade on the Powerlock wasn't able to meet the task.

However, the Tomahawk was not needed. The SOG's blade did fine. I removed the backbone, the wishbone, the ribs, and spatchcocked the bird.

While the SOG did OK, the blade lost it's edge during this process. In removing the backbone, I tend to 'feel' my way along, severing joints as I go. This results in a little blade-on-bone contact, which seemed to be enough to dull the SOG.

After completing the task, I stropped the SOG to bring the edge right back.

After the chicken was prepped, it was seasoned and grilled for about 45 minutes. Yum!

Thank you, SOG!   :tu:

(and, yes, I washed the blade after doing yardwork, before cutting up the chicken, and after cutting up the chicken.  :salute:)

Since I have three PowerPliers (how did I end up with 3 of them?  ???) I have what I believe are all the variations, one with the fine smaller teeth, one with the wider and bigger teeth, and one with a Robertson driver instead of a 1/4 driver or an additional Flathead  :salute:

I haven't compared both saws so I don't really know which would I prefer  :ahhh

To me cauliflower and zucchini testing are essentials to determine the performance of a blade  :salute:

PS: I once used a Tomahawk in the kitchen (not exactly a tomahawk, it was the Ontario SPAX) and it went through the thing  ::) and got stuck into the wooden cutting board below  :P, the mark was there for years until we got rid of that board on our last move

Day 23:

A few missed photo opportunities today. In the morning I used the large driver bit to pry up the pull-tab on a can of seltzer. So that pretty much saved the day. But no phone or camera, so no glorious action shot.....sorry.

Later, with even more drama, I used the pliers to remove some debris from the engine compartment of Mrs Nix's car. So that was two major rescues in one day, neither of which got documented.

I considered doing some re-enactment shots, but, with the production budget under scrutiny, I opted for a simple nature shot from the garden.

Nice, eh?

So here it is, Day 23, and I have used every tool of the Powerlock, for either it's designed purpose or an alternative, with the exception of the crimper.  The rest of this challenge should be pure gravy...........

Day 25:

It doesn't pay to get on Mrs Nix's bad side.

Let me explain:

We've had a couple of chipmunks in the local area since Spring. At first they seemed cute. Then they started digging little tunnels and dens under the back patio. But Mrs Nix still thought they were cute.

Then she discovered that at least one chipmunk had gotten up into her car engine compartment and gnawed away some of the insulation under the hood. (Probably to line it's den.) Well, the chipmunks are not cute anymore. I was given orders to remove them from the premises.....ASAP.

So I set out a trap and caught one this morning. He was furious and was chattering and 'barking' at me. I drove him about 10 miles away, to a national forest, with a nice stream nearby.

Now, I've seen Monty Python and I knew I didn't want my fingers anywhere near the mouth of that trap when I opened it up. So, I used the Powerlock to lift up one of the doors from a safe distance away. A good argument for a full-sized multi, right here.

Anyway the little rascal bolted out the trap door and scampered off into the woods. I half-expected him to be back on the patio by the time I got home.

Day 25 (continued):

Work continued on my knife handle today. The epoxy set up well and I wanted to shape the handle today, or at least start shaping the handle.

The brass pins were left standing tall (proud), and I thought I'd try to use the file to grind them down, so that the pins didn't tear up my sandpaper. However, the file (both sides) was mostly useless for this. I did scratch up the brass a bit, but didn't make enough progress to continue using this 'tool'.

I resorted to using a hacksaw blade, which did the trick nicely.

Later, I used a dremel to sand down some of the tricky spots in this curvy handle. The medium driver bit at the tip of the cap lifter worked well in adjusting the tension of the little sanding bit.  :tu:

For those who are interested in the progress of the knife handle so far:

Might still be a be thick, but I want to slow down now. It's easy to take wood off, not so simple to add it back.....

Day 25 (continued):

We caught another chipmunk this evening. This one was a bit bigger, but equally angry.

We took him out to the same spot where we released the first chipmunk this morning. Maybe they will start a small colony..... The same procedure was used to release the door of the trap, using the extended reach provided by the SOG Powerlock's pliers.

Once the door was cracked open, this big rodent was out in a flash. Lightning could learn a thing or two from this guy!

So, that's two chipmunks relocated. That may be all, but we will set the trap again in the morning.  :tu:

As I read the part about driving the little feller out to the woods near a stream I was afraid that the next thing I read would be how you threw the trap, with the chipmunk in it, into the stream, submerging the chipmunk until he stopped twitching.  Your way of dealing with the fluffy menace by releasing it was a more humane end to the story.  Liked your version of the story much better than the version in my head. You caught Alvin and Simon, now you just have to catch Theodore.

Day 26 :

Busy day and a lot of uses, so I'll have to make multiple posts.

We'll start with the third chipmunk, let's call him Theodore.

Theodore fell victim to Mrs Nix's vengeance early this morning. I set the trap at dawn. Shortly after breakfast, he was caught.

One more time, I drove this little guy out to a lovely woodland setting about 10 miles from the house and released him, using the Powerlock's pliers to lift up one gate. He seemed a bit more frightened than the others. He froze on the rock after he crept out of the trap. However, once he realized he was free, he took off for the hills.....

I was feeling pretty good about having trapped and released three (3) chipmunks. I knew there were two (2), but I wasn't sure about the third one. But there he was, number three, Theodore, bagged and relocated. So, you awl can imagine my incredulity when I pulled into the driveway and saw.....

NUMBER 4!
Title: Re: Powerlock 30-day challenge
Post by: Nix on July 18, 2018, 11:55:57 PM
Day 26 (continued):

OK, so I knew of two, but then there were three, and now four (4) chipmunks. Clearly this was a more serious situation than I had realized. I now felt I was outnumbered and about to be overrun. I put the trap out again, but a new fear had settled in. How, oh, how, would I get out of this with an intact automobile?

No, I wasn't panicking, but I figured I might have to up my game. Time to bring out the heavy duty equipment. Time for some good old American firepower.....

Yes, I pulled out a few firearms and headed up to the range to make sure I was sighted in.

The Powerlock served well here, too.

I used the awl to open up a box of .22LR ammo, and loaded up a magazine.......  Oh! My sights were a bit off. I was shooting a little high.....

I used the small driver on the can opener to adjust the rear sight and started scoring hits!

But....while .22LR is a fine, fine cartridge, what if there was a big one out there? What if there were a really big and tough chipmunk out there, just waiting for me....?

There is no way a .22LR would get the job done. No.....I'd need something more Powerful......I'd need a .44 Magnum.....

(https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/bIv9A6QTj9Sx_HZcpOGrAg--~A/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjtzbT0xO3c9NTAwO2g9MjEw/http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/movie-news/50bfcfd0-cf09-11e3-a1d8-2fb22c91f1dc_Clint-Eastwood-Make-My-Day.gif)

So, I pulled out the old .44 Mag and set up some targets.

I used the scissors to open a package of stickers. The scissors still aren't working all that well, but, with some patience, they got the job done.

Now, I had made up a batch of heavy bullets. These were big 300 grain rounds, loaded up on top of some H-110 powder. Should be enough bullet to stop an Ox, but would they work on Monster Chipmunks?

The initial shots were a tad high and bit to the right. I used the Powerlock's small driver on the can opener to adjust the sights, once again.

I never wiped the smirk off that little smurf's face, but I felt pretty good about getting rounds on target.

My guns were 'dialed-in', but was I ready for the chipmunk hordes?  And was this heat starting to get to me.....?

Day 26 (continued):

I was feeling prepared. Not confident, but prepared.

My traps were out, my guns were loaded and sighted. I thought I was ready.

But it was hot....too hot....

I knew I'd have to do something to keep my senses sharp. But what?

I reviewed the recommendations while I had a beer and some fried chicken wings.....

Then I remembered that some authorities and experts reported that hot or spicy foods could induce a cooling sweat!  And I had a fresh bottle of hot sauce in the cupboard!

Of course it had one of those smurfin' safety wrappers on it. But I whipped out the awl and had that bottle of hot sauce opened and downed in no time.......  :ahhh

So.....I thought at this point with a bottle of hot sauce, a quart of milk, and a bottle of antacids in my stomach that it might be a good time to take a nap...... yeah.

Just as I'm drifting of to dreamy dreamland, I hear....***squeak***....***scratch, scratch, scratch***

Huh?

Yes, another chipmunk caught in the trap.

So, those of you who thought I might be a bit paranoid, maybe the heat was getting to me, maybe I was 'losing it'.....no....chipmunk number four was in the box.

I drove him out to the woods and released him next to that same stream.  This time I tried to capture the stream in the background:

SOG pliers, again pressed into service in opening the trap.

This time the little guy scampered right down the bank and hid in a hole under a rock. Hope he gets that peanut butter cleaned off his fur......

Mrs Nix did spot another chipmunk, but this one seems to have eluded my cunning trap. Tomorrow I'm going fishing, so he might not get caught until the weekend. I hope.

Day 28 :

Today was forecast to be hot, so I headed up into the mountains to do some fishing. Here was today's gear:

It was pretty warm, but the water was cool and nice to wade in.

Here is a better view of where I was fishing, sort of:

I headed up toward that hill and covered about 3 miles of stream. I didn't see anybody else, but I did see lots of birds and a few deer. Also spotted lots of deer sign, some elk sign, and some old bear tracks.

Really nice day and caught a few of these:

Not going to challenge the state record, but they were fun and behaved like proper trout. Powerlock was useful for removing hooks. I do like the ease with which the piers can be deployed with one hand (while holding a fish in the other).

While it was nice and cool, I still ended up getting a little dehydrated. A lot of wading, hiking, and scampering. But the scenery was worth it......

As mucha s I like flicking multi tools, I must admit I much prefer the OHO-ablitiy of SOG tools over the Gerber ones,
and the advantages that come with it (longer tools not shortened by the "flicking frame", Compound Leverage, non-rattly tool, etc.)  :multi:

The book was published in 1958, so there's no mention of SOG.

But before Special Forces and the Special Operations Group (SOG), there was the Office of Strategic Services (OSS).

Day 29 (continued):

Tonight was pizza night. I was using leftover stuff to make the pizza, but it turned out fairly well. Used the SOG's main blade to peel and core some garlic. Worked just fine.

I figured opening a can of tomato sauce would be no problem. The SOG's can opener has been fine in the past. But, for some reason, this was the result:

I was moving in reverse (rotating the can counter-clockwise) and this didn't seem to work too well. Perhaps I should have been moving forward (rotating the can clockwise). With a Victorinox can opener I usually move forward. Lesson learned. I think.

Pizza turned out pretty well, but I didn't grab a photo (too busy eating).   Sorry, guys. Next time!  :tu:

I once unintentionally made "Steeled Beans"  when opening a can of Pinto Beans with my Powerlock in the middle of a trip.  Needless to say, the SOG was easily cleaned in the water stream afterwards but I remember that being the last time I usd the Powerlock Can opener, and the rest of the hike I reached for the trusty SAK every time, and have ever since.  :climber:

Maybe it was me, my technique or the fact that we were tired after hours of walking but I loathe SOG's can openers and never use them

PS: I've read good things about that book, it sure looks like a good read  :tu:

Day 30 :

Quite a few uses this morning.

First off, I used the large driver to open a can of Spar Varnish. I mixed the spar varnish with turpentine and linseed oil to make a finish for the knife handle project I mentioned a few days ago.

No problems there. A simple tool for a simple task.  :tu:

While the finish was drying, I went out for some yard work. I have two young Apricot trees that I planted two years ago. I left them unprotected the first summer and some deer came along and ate them down.

Since then, I keep them protected with some fences. The fences are held together with tie wire. But, a few times every summer I have to take the fences down and pull weeds and cut the grass down.

The SOG's wire cutters handled this well. I used the pliers to pull open the wire, then the cutter to reach in and snip the wire. With two cages, this required multiple cuts, maybe 20. I also used the knife blade to cut some old, hardened paracord from off one of my rebar stakes.

I thought I saw some edge-rolling on the cutters:

But with closer inspection with a magnifying lens, it is primarily just a bit of wear. There is some very fine chipping at the edge, but it is fairly minimal. I subsequently went and used the wire cutters to cut down some woody weeds growing in the back and had no problems doing so.

The knife edge felt like it rolled a bit from cutting the paracord. I then tried to slice paper: the edge caught and just tore the paper. After a light sharpening and stropping the edge came back fairly well.

Just to follow up on my earlier posts about my homemade fixie, here's a shot of the completed knife:

It has multiple flaws and has a poor grind and terrible finish, but it is sharp!
I could try to refine it a bit more, but I think I'm leaving it as is right now.
If, after I use it a bit, I think the handle needs refining, I may sand it further and then refinish it.
The tip isn't quite as 'pointy' as I'd like, and I may see about reshaping that during subsequent sharpenings.
But, for now, it's done and will be pressed into service as an EDC.....once I get a sheath made.

Title: Re: Powerlock 30-day challenge
Post by: Nix on July 22, 2018, 11:27:38 PM
Final thoughts:

I’m going to try to do this Dutch_Tooler style and award points to various features.

Pliers: 10/10. I have no issues with the pliers at all. They are a bit pointy than I’d like, but I never had an issue using them, and I can see some potential advantages to have such pointy pliers.

The compound leverage is nice and, with the covers in place, the grip is fairly comfortable. The compound leverage design makes these seem a bit fussy and probably prone to collecting sand and mud in harsher environments, but I didn’t encounter an issue.

The fact that later models, like these, had guards added to cover the gears is a bit concerning and also means that the overall weight of the tool is increased.

Nevertheless, if you can carry a tool of this size and weight, the pliers are nice. So, full marks.

Wire cutters: 8/10. The wire cutters worked well and cut some tough materials (like that double-stranded barbed wire). The compound leverage works nicely and makes cutting easy. However, I’m deducting 1 point for the cutters showing some fine chipping and wear after only 1-month of relatively light use, and 1 point for not having replaceable cutters. Otherwise, the wire cutters were great.

Drivers: 9/10. I used every driver at least once. They all seemed to work well for light-duty tasks. The Phillips started to wear with a more demanding task, but is still serviceable. I think that for a multitool, the driver are adequate. I deducted 1 point for the ease with which the Phillips started to wear (although, it was a tough test).

Awl: 9/10. The awl worked well, as I typically use an awl. I prefer the Victorinox-style awl, but this 'spike' seemed to work fine. However, I do like to be able sew with an awl, so I deducted 1 point for not having a sewing eye.

Knife: 4/10
. Some of the deductions here are down to my own preferences, so you’ll have to recognize some personal bias in this scoring.

I hate the knife. Full stop. First the design is poor: the blade is thin and evidences significant play, both side-to-side and up-down. I suspect that with heavy use it might bend or snap.

And I dislike serrations. The only thing worse than a serrated edge is a half-serrated edge. And the portion that has a plain edge is ground with a chisel edge. So, right from the start, I don’t like this knife.

But it gets worse. The steel is 420HC (I think?) and not well heat treated. So the knife can’t hold an edge. I had to retouch the edge after every use, with the exception of when I sliced through some tape to open a package. A knife that doesn’t hold an edge is of little use for any practical purpose. Yes, it can be rationalized as an “Emergency” back-up knife, but that doesn’t play with me.

A knife should be able to work like a knife. This works like a nice Chinese noodle (which I’m suspicious it might actually be……). If you anticipate having an emergency where you will need to cut just one or two pieces of twine, this tool may work for you.

I gave it four points because 1) it can cut something and 2) it’s pointy enough to get into tight places. Even as I type this I’m thinking 4 points is about 5 too many…….but, hey, it is, technically, a knife.

Saw: 8/10. The saw is pretty good. The kerf is wider than the blade, which facilitates cutting. The teeth are aggressive. It works primarily on the pull cut, and I think that’s a good idea for a multitool. I dinged the saw 1 point for being too short. This is a full sized multitool; it should have a decently long saw. I dinged it 1 point for being loose, both up and down, but also side to side. This looseness made sawing a little sloppy and inefficient. Overall, a good saw.

Scissors: 5/10
. When I first got the Powerlock, the scissors could not cut anything. Now normally, this would be a big fat ZERO points, however, I was able to peen the rivet holding the scissors together and tighten up the scissors. This resulted in the scissors being able to cut at the tips (last 40% of the scissors does cut). The tips now cut week enough that I could use the scissors when I went fishing a few times. Since the scissors do work, with some customer assistance, at a 50% level, I gave the scissors 5 points. ….and, again, that seems a bit generous……hmmmmm.

File: 3/10
. I sort of thought I could use the file to clean up the edge of an axe, but the file is fairly useless, even on brass. This multitool would be better without the file (save weight) or if the file were replaced with a second knife blade (one serrated, one plain edge). The file did work well to throw some sparks from a ferro rod, so it gets 3 points.

1/4” Driver: 8/10.
The 1/4” driver is one of my favorite features of this tool. Although, I don’t think I carried 1/4” bits or the adapter & hex bits for more than six or seven days of this challenge. I’m just not the kind of person to tote a huge bag of stuff around on a daily basis. However, the ability to use a 1/4” socket/bit is hugely appealing for me. I like to ride motorcycles and I usually have several 1/4” bits with me. Nice to think I could press the Powerlock into service if I needed to.

I dinged the 1/4” driver 2 points for being loose and for having the retention spring pop off unexpectedly. I noticed it fell off and replaced it, but that’s a little concern.

Still, a 1/4” driver is just cool if nothing else. So, 8 points.

Openers: 9/10.
The openers worked just fine. I know I struggled with opening a can of tomato sauce, but I think that was user error.  Is the can opener as good as a Victorinox opener? No. This simple tool has never been done better than Victorinox has done it. I have no idea why. But, the Powerlocks openers work and are there if you need them, so 9 points.

Ease of Use: 6/10.
Tricky category this. The locks worked easily, but were sloppy, allowing blade play in most all tools. The pliers can be ‘flicked’ open easily, which makes them essentially one-hand opening. Of course it was not an infrequent occurrence that I whacked my knuckles or fingers when flicking the pliers open. Once open, the compound leverage definitely made using the tool easier.

The biggest draw back for me, and I never could get past this, was the need to open the handle covers to access the tools. This was a big drawback for me. It might not be an issue for other users. I thought I would become accustomed to it, but I found that I was irritated time and time again when looking for a tool.

A secondary issue was tool clumping. Because the nail nicks are so bad on the Powerlock, tools are hard to select and open. So, in some ways, tool clumping might be considered a ‘feature’. But in general, the clumping is a pain. And, when first using the Powerlock, clumping led to me cutting myself while putting the undesired tools back in the handle.

Lastly, all the tools are stored in the interior of the handles. The pliers need to be opened, or partially opened, in order to access all the most useful tools. This is exactly the same as the Leatherman ST300, but note that the Swisstool has outside opening tools, a nice advantage in my mind. Of course, one knows this prior to purchasing the Powerlock, so there is a tacit acceptance of that issue in advance.

Smooth opening pliers are great, but the difficulties with clumping, covers, and finding tools really detracted. Perhaps the Powerlock deserves 7 points here, but I’m reluctant to give more than 6.

Comfort: 8/10. Overall, the Powerlock, with cover installed, was fairly comfortable to use. As noted, I did occasionally bang my knuckles when flipping the pliers open, but that seems like a funny issue. More concerning, I managed to pinch my hand with the crimper (Who really needs a crimper?) several times. I found that I started to think about grinding that damn crimper off to avoid pinching myself. The Powerlock is a bit heavy, but I routinely carried it in a pants pocket. In the sheath it carried well and was easily accessible. The handle covers, while annoying, did improve the tool’s comfort. Overall, 8 points, despite the damn pinching crimpers.

Maintenance: 8/10. Good marks here. The SOG is stainless steel and can be washed out easily. Although I didn’t need to, it can be disassembled with Allen wrenches for more intensive cleaning. I do worry that the fussy nature of the compound leverage, gears, and shields makes it more prone to getting dirt, sand, and mud stuck in the pivot area. Not an issue for me, but then I’m not using this in the Horn of Africa in the middle of a dust storm. And, if you are going to use the knife, you’ll need to resharpen it after every use to maintain a razor-edge. My general rule for life: Simpler is Better, and simple with quality is best. 8 points here.

Fit & Finish: 6/10.
Overall the Powerlock is finished nicely. I think it would be nice to have some of the exposed edges of sheet metal relieved a bit, and the grind on the tips of the needle nose pliers is asymmetric and uneven. The edge on the knife as delivered was poor. The locks work well, but the scissors don’t lock automatically. Once the scissors are deployed, I have to manually engage the lock. But at least it works. Overall a decent job, but since I had to peen the scissors together and all the tools have some play, the Powerlock can’t really earn more than 6 points here.

Total Score 101/140.

When I was thinking about this review, I thought I’d give the Powerlock a solid “C”. A score of 72% would equal a “C” grade and a pass. So my gestalt impression and specific scoring would seem to match up to a degree.

In the final analysis, I think this tool is a nice set of pliers. If you want a nice set of portable pliers, this is a good tool. And it has a few other nice features.

But if you want a more comprehensive multitool, I’d carefully consider some of the other options in this size and weight range.

For me, the Powerlock will get stored out in the garage or the truck and used as a set of pliers. When I go fishing or camping or motorcycling, it will be a Swisstool or Super Tool 300 that get’s carried along. If I go hiking or backpacking, a Juice, Spirt, or Charge will go along.

In short, the Powerlock didn’t quite earn a place in my EDC rotation. There is no way it would be the multitool I’d take on a deployment to hostile places (the Charge and a Style did go).

This doesn’t mean I think it’s a poor multitool, but it’s just not the multitool for me. Your experience may differ and your needs may mean the Powerlock is the perfect multitool for you. If it is, just be are to carry a reliable knife as well.  :tu:

GAW:

As stated earlier, I have a NIB Powerlock with scissors that I plan to give-away (GAW). If you have already posted in this thread, you are entered for a random drawing for this GAW. If you haven't entered by the time of this post, but would like a chance in the GAW, you must reply in this thread with a review of my final assessment/review of the Powerlock. Be honest. This is a great time to dispute one lazy person's review of the Powerlock. Future generations may want an alternative perspective on my views. And, let's face it, I'm kinda biased. So, chime in and earn a shot at wining a Powerlock.

Oh, the GAW drawing will be conducted tomorrow, Monday, 23 July 2018. So act quickly!  :salute:

The big question is what will you be carrying tomorrow?  I get so caught up in the challenges that it takes me several days after before I start carrying something else.  I happen to like the PowerLock, but then again, my scissors worked from the start, and I don't have the partially serrated blade.  Congratulations on completing your challenge.

Wow, so many things going on

A. The knife is justy fine, Nix! If it cuts fine, and doesn't break in your hands while doing it, it's a good knife. If it can retain an edge, be comfortably gripped and hold up to use, it's great. And finally, if it can be carried nicely, look good, then it's excellent!!  :tu:
I like how you put a guard in it, but still managed to put a forward choil in front of it for closer cutting and detailed work  :salute:

B. The Powerlock steel is 420HC for the blade, but IME SOG's 420HC doesn't come close to Leatherman's let alone Buck's steel  ::), it's much closer to the Gerber 420HC they also use on their blades.  :P And if this one was poorly heat treated (which I've had happen in two SOGs, a PPP and a Blacktip ) it's even worse

C. The gear covers do really help in carryability and comfort, I can't tell you how I loathed those gears without covers, both in the sheath and in use!  :ahhh

D. SOG's awls are really good IMO if you don't need to sew with them, and the one in the SOG PP is one of my all time favorites,  while the "Spike" in the Powerlock is good but not nearly as nice as that one

E. The cutters are admittedly soft  >:(, and SOG would really benefit from replaceable cutters especially given the fact that the Compound Leverage "promotes" or "welcomes" using the pliers with more force,  :o apply more pressure and do harder gripping and cutting tasks because it's much easier in the hand to put a lot of force in the jaws thanks to it  8)

Thanks, El P.

You've got more experience with SOG tools than I do. And I expect that will remain true. My SOG experience has convinced me that I'm a Leatherman fan for life.

This was a fun challenge and, really the SOG was a good multitool. It did most everything I asked of it. With a few design tweaks and some improvement in the quality, it could be my favorite, big multitool. Right now, for me, it's just not there.

It’s a great shame that SOG doesn’t take Q/C seriously
As they could make sure that the
tools they put on their MTs work properly
If they sorted the tools out SOG would
be a excellent MT company  :salute:
