The new Morakniv Garberg is here. I just got mine yesterday, and I thought Id start a new thread about it and share my opinions on it here.
Specs:
Blade length: 109mm
Full length: 229mm
Blade thickness: 3,2mm
Weight: 272g
Blade steel: 14C28N stainless steel
Handle material: polyamide (plastic)
Sheath: Leather or multi mount plastic sheath.
Price: $100 (june 2016)
The Garberg is a full tang knife, and its made in Sweden. I got the Leather sheath one.

First impressions:
Its heavier than a regular Mora due to its full tang and thicker steel construction.
The handle looks a bit cheap, because the plastic its made from is a little "shiny". It would have looked better with a more matte handle. The handle also had a small tool/grinding mark near the edge.
The handle is very comfortable in the hand.
The blade was a bit dirty from oil/grease when I got it. Its was easily removed, but it would have given a better first impression coming clean out of the box. It was very sharp out of the box.
The sheath is fantastic. Its made from thick high quality leather and is very well made.
I took the Garberg out into the garage and used it on some firewood. It cuts like a dream and it is very comfortable to use. Obviously they have focused more on functionality than on beauty.
First impression summary:
A capable and functional knife with a great sheath.
It could benefit from a little better finish. A little bit more polishied blade and a little more matte handle would make it look more attractive.

He has more Moras than me, so that wont be hard :)

Here are some comparison pics with a Fallkniven F1 wich IMO is its biggest competitior:

Great thread and pics mate. I still can't see me getting one, but I'm glad to hear it performs well. :)

Great thread and pics mate. I still can't see me getting one, but I'm glad to hear it performs well. :)
Thanks!
There are lot of really good knives in this price range, so I cant blame you.
I wonder how many would pick the Garberg if you could choose between the it and a Fallkniven F1 and a Helle Temagami?
Im afraid a lot would pass it by simply because it looks cheaper.
-
Interesting. Shame about the QC considering the price. I can accept that on their cheaper knives, but considering the other options I can get in that price range...
Be curious to see how you get on with it long term.
Any plans for a long-term or field test?

I plan to use it on the next hikes and camping trips Ill go on, to see how it performs there.
Ill post updates here when I do.

Being a Mora enthusiast, there's no question. I know Mora quality and the Garberg is built for a lifetime of work.... :2tu:
If it's a pretty Swede you're after.... :D
-
I took the Garberg out with me fishing today.
It performed flawlessly.
I especially like that the blade isnt as thick as on the F1, making it better for slicing and finer cutting.
-
did you catch anything? how did it perform on fish?
-
Good to hear it's going well mate.
-

Only a tiny bass that I threw back in the water.

Fish gutting will have to wait until I get something bigger.
-
That sheath looks good. How was it comfort-wise?
-
That sheath looks good. How was it comfort-wise?
It worked well. The loop is big enough to easily move out of the way when sitting down, but tight enough to hold it nicely in place when walking.
-
Sounds like everything is well thought out on it! Thank you for the latest installment Grathr!
-
Only thing holding me back is price. Otherwise, I would probably have one by now. It's also hard to justify a new knife considering the number I own and the amount they get used.
-
Oh man, I have been eyeballing this one. But I need another Mora like I need a hole in the head. Nice pic and review Grathr.

I like the looks of the handle, it does seem comfortable. What about the rhombic pattern, is it perceptible?
Sometimes the pattern on my Bahco can be annoying :-\ but they are made differently and out of different materials :)

Just saw the first listing on ebay for a Garberg.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/MORAKNIV-GARBERG-MULTI-MOUNT-NEW-tactical-knife-MODEL-MORA-of-Sweden-Stainless-/331909352261?

They are becoming available all over now. I just got a mail the other day that Lamnia has them in stock as well.
Im liking my Garberg more and more. They have obviously put a lot of thought into the thickness of the blade. "Survival" knives tend to have very thick blades, sometimes too thick for finer wood work. The Garberg seems to have found a middle ground, thick enough to be strong, but not so thick that it cant do finer cutting.

Passed all the tests.....but, whacking a zero edge grind edge against a brick....what did he expect. Put a nice micro bevel on it and the edge will be much tougher and more resistant to rolling/chipping.

Looks lovely! The grease might have been left on thr knife by purpose, in order to protect it from humidity etc while it sits on the shelf.
And those difficult to write/pronounce Scandanavian names have a mysterious beauty in them. :tu:

Wow, just watched Noss destroy an A-1 Fallkniven so I'm sure he would destroy a Garberg!!!!!! :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh
-
To be fair he destroyed almost everything. I think that 4 knives survived his testing and 2 of those were Bussekin with over 0.25" spines. The other 2 would then be some Cold steel machete and I believe there was some Cheaper than dirt knife that went for around $9, but I could be mistaken

I've been telling people about that old YouTube where the guy stood on his Old Mora classic and all it did was put a slight bend in it.... Could never find the tube again so I looked like a nut job!!

Looking good mate. :tu: The leather sheath looks well made as well.
Really heavy duty leather, 3mm thick. Looks to be perfectly sewn and fitted with a heavy snap!
I've looked this thing over thoroughly and I can't find a single imperfection in either the knife or sheath! :dd:

Iteresting that he thinks its uncomfortable in the hand. IMO its very comfortable.
I can see his point about putting rubber on it wich would make the grip softer. But that would also get worn down over time, making the handle less durable.
Im used to all wood/plastic handles, so Im fine with it the way it is.
-
So... Gentlemen/Roughmen... was it worth the $100? :pok:
How is the grip. handle? Not heard much. is it rubbery, solid, slick? Does it hold well when working the blade; wet conditions, slick conditions? Flimsy material??

Tempting... good thing it doesn't come in Desert Ironwood handle, cause then I'd would of already ordered it. My father used cut trips of leather like those fighting knives from Ka-Bar, and those have held up nicely.
Any close-ups of the blade as per the bevels? Is it balance for throwing? Am guessing with the polymer handle it would be easily adaptable to a spear. is the plastic sheathing system better than the leather, as per personal (non-mounted) use?

Why would you throw it?
And why would you use it as a spear blade?

Bevels (the grinds ate perfectly symmetrical)

Balances about an inch behind the guard and yeah. I could throw it but don't know your skill levels. It's too fine a knife to throw.

Yes, it's worth it. I may buy another to put back as a spare. Handle is perfect, feels like it will last and easy on the hand. Any super heavy stuff would be done wearing a deerskin glove anyway since my hands aren't as tough as they used to be.

I havent seen it "in the flesh", but I hope it holds up. Id be pissed if I lost my Garberg because the loop failed.
The Kansbol looks like it has the same loop doesent it?

The Kansbol looks like it has the same loop doesent it?
Yes, it looks like the same setup....wonder if the Garberg sheath will fit the Kansbol and vice versa? The grips look exactly the same. :D

Time for the Garberg to get stoned!!!! :D
(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz256/SAKGuy/Microbevel%20time-%20GARBERG_zpsr7ijfbtz.jpg)
Put a nice micro (secondary) bevel on...now lets see if it will roll/chip on the Pecan Stick! To avoid confusion with the B Blk test, I flipped it over and started higher on the stick, then put my weight into some cuts and chips. It worked great, just like the Bushcraft Black.
Damage? Nope, edge is still perfect and it will still slice skin on my thumb just like the B Blk!
So, the Garberg's 14C28N Sandvik worked as well as the Bushcraft Black's carbon steel blade on a similar task with a similar edge bevel.
:2tu: I'm a happy camper!! :D

Yep, and it's awesome! :D Had it a couple of years but just started using it in the last month or so. Been using the DC-4 for touch ups and my big Smiths bench stones for other stuff.

And now you're selling me on Fallkniven's sharpening stones
They are really nice!!! I use them alot, esp the 4" DC-4 Combo. It's just right for a field stone....
Here's my worn DC-4 with some of my other stones...
And another shot of the 521 with a diff knife.

I like the DC-4 so much that I had my kast custom scabbard made with a pocket big enough to hold one instead of the std 3" stone.

Well........
I did it.
I started feeling really lousy, came in and decided to touch up my Garberg after the test.

It's really superficial (Flitz will probably remove most of it) but it represents a serious misstep in my sharpening discipline. A fail.
On the flip side, I won't feel so bad about using it for lots more stuff! A win! :2tu:
Still, it looks like hell. A fail.
But now, I can buy another for the collection!!! A win! :2tu:
Ok, I'll stop now...

That's a battle scar. Wear it with pride!
As far as Fallkniven stones, I've somehow never pulled the trigger on them and cussed myself more times than I could count because of it

That great!!!! The DC521 really lets you tune your stroke on bigger, longer knives. I was able to get the CS Trail Master sharp with it...a feat that has alluded me on 5 or 6 other sharpeners over the last 4 years. You can do big knives on the DC-4 but you have to break up your edge into two sections or abbreviate the stroke so it begins and ends on the small stone...hard to do with a 7-10 inch blade! Difficult to explain but the bigger stone lets the edge ride over more horizontal surface on each stroke. Better, quicker results IMO. And the big ceramic side is a dream for touch ups!
Congrats!!

I know, but the honeymoon period was still going... :dd: It still smelled new!
Over here, you can get the DC-4 shipped (with Prime) for around $20.00 which is great for what it will do...

I think I paid 34-36 dollars when they first came out and Ray Mears was using them in a youtube!

Turns out that its on the striated grind area and Flitz won't help much. It's ok, I'm gonna do some more tests anyway.

Don't know about that fellow using the knife to split the wood. Guess he forgot to use downward pressure on the handle when splitting the wood? Okay, I can see that if it was a rat-tailed knife, but this is full tanged. Think he was worried the handle wouldn't be able to take the stress?

I happened upon a Garberg in a shop on Saturday... Retail price, €140
They were cool enough to let me handle the thing. Feels heavy-ish, definitely feels solid and this includes the, seemingly pretty comfortable, handle. Thick spine, edge ground very well except one tiny spot right at the tip but no big issue!
I am really considering getting one but not at that price, no. I wish it came with a clip point, though :dd:

With all the Mora love going on here lately, how is it that there is no Mora club yet?

Yes, I guess you can say that. It seemed like the last burr-to-be on one side wasn't removed in the end. I don't think it affects cutting quality though.

Ok, well. Gee, I don't know then. Mine looks intentional like it's supposed to be that. The grinds were absolutely symmetrical so I don't think it's a mistake on mine.

The Garberg leather sheath is really heavy duty, made for the outdoors.
In the past, I treated all my camping leather with a coat or two of Sno Seal, melted in with a blow dryer. The Garberg sheath appears to be very well finished full grain leather, very tight grain. It already beads water pretty well. Much better that a lot of factory sheaths I've owned but it will still get treated before winter gets here.
The leather is stiff, thick, with 3 heavy rivets holding the belt loop. Specs say the leather is 3mm. All the edges are smooth, the stitching is evenly spaced, tight, and looks done with heavy duty thread. It's nice sheath, built for the rigors of outdoors IMO. It's stiffer with thicker leather and heavier thread/rivets than the Grohmann flap sheath for my #4 Camp knife.
Here's some comparison pics of the two sheaths:

Took me a few years to learn all the ins and outs of some of my knives and where I was making the mistakes as a user. How the h, e, double hockey sticks does someone become an expert in a month?

If the handle isn't as grippy on the top/bottom wonder if siping would help any?
Mine's been sitting at a UPS facility since Friday, in Salt Lake City. Is what I don't like about UPS & FedEx, both places sit on stuff the entire weekend. Both will probably send it USPS on Monday, so have wasted a day there. Should of paid more for USPS shipping and would of had them already. While a few days might not be a big deal to some, for me I have to work those days on the main job. Kind of smurfs ya when you are expecting goodies. :ahhh

well Robert, I guess it's about time you wrote a review on that Mora Kansbol you'll get at some point

With YouTube and the Internet anyone can be an expert in a few viewings. I start chucking the credibility when the reviewers keep showing close up shots repeatedly, keep saying "guys" or "Hey guys" - pfft, there are women viewers too :twak: and men who don't refer well to "guys" or "dude(s)", and when they overly use "very" or "very, very". And lack of preparation, and knowledge of the tool specifics, and use of "uhh" and other wierd anomalies.
Julie Warner did great reviews, for comparison, and she's a woman! :D Even impromptu reviews or "on location." Okay, maybe there should be more women reviewers than guys with gnarly motorbike shirts on, more tattoos than there are flies in the forest. If you're in the forest doing survival or survival-like reviews, leave the city garb at home. Wear what you'd wear to the mountains, jeans, a belt, hiking boots, unbranded gloves if it's cold, a shirt or t-shirt.
Guess I'm being over cynical. And some guys think they need to stretch out a review of the same garbage that's already common knowledge, talk endlessly, and make a 50 minutes review when 10 minutes would of gotten it done over.
Then too I'm weird. I do talk too much too. key' it's a knife. It's got a cutting edge, a handle, maybe a lanyard hole, I saw that on the manufacturer's website. Let's see those being used! I did like the one guy with all the branded wear on when he showed the grind. Will give him a +1 on that, but if he needs banded knuckles gloves on to handle a knife - that's not saying much for the handle.
My 5¢ worth of

1 thing that sticks out to me is griping about the Fallkniven sheath. Everyone does that so nothing against the review, but in general there was a video explaining the philosophy and even testing it out. Sadly the video and the channel were taken down.
Basically the guy contacted Fallkniven about those plastic sheaths and got the reply that it was because of winter conditions and possible freezing. Since it sounded like a very poor excuse the guy put a few knives with high quality leather sheaths, kydex sheaths and Fallknivens with their plastic sheaths in the freezer. I think the time frame was between 12 and 24 hours, but I wouldn't put my hand in the fire over that one. Anyway when the knives came out of the freezer, all Fallknivens were easy to get out like they never went in to the freezer. Kydex had some issues and leather was a bit sticky but still worked.
So the guy put all the knives in water (maybe even got some water in the sheaths) and put 'em back in the freezer. Because what would happen if you had snow or ice on the knife before putting it back? Same period of time and the results were very different. Fallkniven knives came out a bit hard, leather sheaths were frozen solid and about 50% of the knives came out after some struggle. Kydex was about as brittle as glass and failed entirely. So Fallkniven's seemingly bs claim was proven right to a degree (the test would have to be repeated a few times with different variables to see how accurate the claim really is).
Now how this relates to Mora, or any other Nordic manufactured knife, is that it would be interesting to see how their sheaths perform in the same test. And by no means is this a let's go freeze our Moras movement idea
-
That's a good point about the extreme freezing environment!
Here in Texas, plastic and kydex are more likely to melt than freeze solid. :D

I quite like the Zytel sheath for my F1.
Its small and makes it very slim and unintrusive on the hip.
Mine holds the knife fine, but I have put some duct tape on the inside of it, to stop the ratling.
One point about the snap that holdes the handle and freezing is that the snap is easy to open when cold. But its is a real smurf to fasten when your hands are really cold and stiff.
-
sadly not a lot of reviewers even think about that so they just rag on zytel
-
UPS got the knife to Payette, then sent it to the post office! :ahhh Went to the local post office, nope. Got car registration issue taken care of, drove to the other local post office, wasn't checked in yet but the young man searched for it. Come out with the box, I show him my ID, and he says by contact he can't give me the box till tomorrow. Argh! So told him well, guess I'll go camping without the new knife. He says wait a minute. He scans the package and says he'll post it being delivered tomorrow so he gave me the box! :mail: :2tu:
-
So, have you opened it yet? :ahhh
-
Oh yes, right after I hunted down some Pokemonsters. had to wait till the coast was clear so no one got offended by an Idahoan with a Swedish knife! :viking:

Garberg not good for cutting up an apple. :( To be fair, the Martiinni Lynx actually fared better for cutting and slicing an apple - obviously due to its thinner and narrower blade. Still, I could of cut the apple rather rough with the Garberg.
Leatherman Flair did not cut the apple very well either. Am guessing that's due to the partially serrated blade, as it's more serrated than not. Not sure what the serrations on the Flair blade are longer than most partially serrated blades.
Thankfully none of the Scandi knives have serrations. The K503x is partially serrated though more for cutting rope with ample space for plane edge cutting.
-
Comparing my late Father's hunting knife he was crafting to the Morakniv Garberg. Pommel and finger guards are the biggest differences seen, and the Gargerg blade is about an inch shorter.

Anyone making Garberd paracord lanyards to slip through the lanyard hole? A less thick paracord like on them CRKY bracelets would be good.
Think all I've done was a couple rattlesnake knots after MANY tries, that was over a year ago too. Rather buy one that someone has access to colorful paracords, cause around here there isn't anything decent that can be called real paracord. What's the colors of the Swedish National Flag? Blue and Yellow? Guess that could work? :ahhh
Maybe a nice bead in the end?
Maybe an MTO branded lanyard? :D

Wonder why neither sheath has a fire-rod attachment loop? Is there a recommended sheath for the Garberg that has a fire-rod loop and a sharpener stone?

Anyone saying in random youtube videos about the Garberg (or in their comments) that it's just a full tang companion has never held a Garberg in it's hand in real life, as simple as that. The Garberg is down to around 75 bucks on Amazon!!!

I wonder if it will spark a lot of copies in the industry

I wonder if it will spark a lot of copies in the industry
Mora is pretty good at making knives at low cost, so it might not be that attractive to copy.
Then again, its not a very complex design, so it wont be that hard to copy.
-
It dipped on Amazon to around $63 bucks w/ a leather sheath....back up now around 75-80.

Finally got around to having a look at the Garberg in a shop the other day. I've got to say my feelings were a little mixed. I really liked the weight, size and the leather sheath. I wasn't so fussed by the feel of the handle nor the finish on the blade. It might have just been the one I looked at but I thought the blade really didn't feel like it had been through a final polish. especially compared to the Mora 2000 I had next to it. I don't want to sound over negative though, it's a nice knife, but I wasn't tempted to buy it either.

Fair point mate. I have no doubt whatsoever that it's a cracking knife in the field. :salute:
-
I'm not altogether sure why they have stepped outside of their niche zone of "great performance at incredible value" and entered an arena with far greater competition. I really like my two cheap Moras and carried one recently. However, I don't feel drawn towards this knife.
I have no doubts that this knife gives excellent performance, I just don't see that it has any extra lure over so many other tools on the market. If I look at my knife array, I can identify key attributes which made me buy that knife over it's competitors:
Mora HiVis - a stainless Mora knife at typical Mora prices, with hi vis scales to avoid loss, and a washable sheath that conveniently clips on the belt.
Meula Jabali 17A - Wonderful brass and stag bowie, great for choking up on the blade, thick spine for durability, yet fine enough edge and clip point for precision work. Great balance and high durability leather sheath.
DuPlessis Warthog - Locally made, washable sheath, brute of a knife with excellent ergonomics and not overly large. Capable of pretty much anything I might want from a knife, including aggressive chopping and batoning as well as more controlled camp chores.
Boker+ TUF - a stainless packable cooks knife, a knife with a kitchen type shape, yet capable of heavier camp chores if necessary
Cold Steel Roach Belly - similar but cheaper
...... you get my drift.....
The Garberg just doesn't sell itself to me on any specific concept. There doesn't seem to be any defining characteristics which means I should choose this particular item over the few hundred other knives it's competing with. As such it doesn't "compete" with other knives I own either. It just leaves me feeling satisfied that I already have better looking knives, cheaper knives, better food prep knives, better wood butchers, lighter knives, heavier knives..... I have no doubt that it will do it's job and earn it's keep - but so will everything else.
It's missing something, it's missing a reason. That reason is not why I would want to own/use it, it's why I would want to NOT use something else instead. That question just doesn't seem to be answered here (for me anyway)

One thing I noted when I got to handle a Garberg was that the grip felt a little too slick and didn't seem to offer a lot of purchase. I was expecting the material to be a bit more tactile I guess. Of course I didn't actually get to use it on anything in the shop so I'd like to hear what you guys who have actually used one think.

I have had no problems with the grip though. It has not felt slippery in the hand.

Same here, I also expected the handle on the Garberg to feel "soft" like the handle on the Mora Companion HD for example, so I was a bit worried when I felt the Garberg in my hand for the first time. But now I actually like the handle on the Garberg more than the one on the Companion. The harder material feels better (especially on a warm summer day), and the shape of the Garberg handle is also better for using the knife in different positions (the handle on the Companion feels weird in some positions, now that I'm used to the Garberg handle shape).
As always this is just my own humble opinion :salute:.

No probs with the handle. Just grippy enough to not abrade your hand with prolonged use, IMO. Also like the size. My XL hand, has plenty of room even with a glove. A feature not found on all Moras.

+1 on both counts.
The handle on my Companion is a bit sticky in the summer and it's not due to grime.

I'm gonna do some ranting here so bear with me...
In today's market there are 3 big name folders that at their base price are about $400. All 3 get outperformed by sub $100 folders. Execution vise 2 of those 3 have fair competition in production knives that go for about $300, the other one barely has a hair over the value folders. What's in a name?
On the other hand yesterday I was a push style knife from a company that makes "tools for working". Same company that put their logo on an incredibly inexpensive piece of cutlery to charge about 7 times the price, released a whole line of knives to satisfy the wet dreams of their fans and compete with Mora (talk about overpriced). Their stuff still sells like hotcakes. What's in a name?
Mora has a place and the Garber shook a long held status quo in the industry. If it were any other company, this would be a non issue. Hell some companies put out kit knives - get the basic version and then dump almost twice as much for the upgrades to the handle, sheath and, in the near future, an actual workable edge.
So to paraphrase Shakespeare:
"What's in a name? That which we call a Mora
By any other name would cut as well"
Although it would probably cost 10 times as much and be marketed as the ultimate solution to all of life's problems when it matters
-
Congrats Mora .

I was put off by the price as well, but to correct that, the MSRP and what happens when the exchange rates are done with it. >:( >:( >:(
The happy fact is I can buy it at a price that I find acceptable, the shop is 1200km away and in another country, but there is a way....

If I really wanted one then that's more like the price I'd be willing to pay. However I only have to look at the pile of fixed bladed knives that I have (and rarely use) and I can't see the Garberg doing anything that I don't already have well covered. If that wasn't the case I'd be much, much more tempted. :)

Congrats on buying a Garberg mate .
I own the multimount sheath and the leather sheath, and I tend to grab for the multimount when I go on a hike. Here's my opinion on these sheaths (quoted myself from this (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,69375.0.html) topic).
The sheath seems to be exactly the same as the one that comes with the Garberg, I've put my Garberg in the Kansbol sheath and vice versa. The Kansbol is a bit harder to get out of the sheath, probably due to its "more rubberized" handle.
My Garberg only comes with me during weekend hikes, so it's not like I have carried it for weeks in a row, but when I carry it, I tend to use this sheath instead of the leather one. I prefer this one over the leather one because of its very low profile design, the leather one looks and feels a lot bigger, while this one is real easy to carry in the side pocket of a backpack, or even in the leg pocket of a pair of outdoor trousers. And with this one you can also put the belt loop on your belt at home, and put the knife and its sheath in the belt loop when you're at the start of your hike, so no "big" knife on your belt while driving your car (yes, you can just put the leather sheath on your belt at the start of the hike also, but when it's cold and wet outside I prefer to pop the knife in the loop instead of having to pull up my fleece and raincoat to unbuckle my belt to ... you know what I mean ;).
Like I said, I only carry this sheath during a hike in the weekends, so I can't really say if the loop and sheath hold up well after time, but I don't see any wear or tear on mine at the moment.
-
Mail day!! :mail:
The Garberg arrived today and damn, am I excited or what :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh
Some early observations, it's smurfty sharp out of the box, and as some have said before, I would have liked a little more "softer" material for the handle, but it's not slippery so I'm sure it will work quite fine and I'm not sure I like the velcro straps that came with the Multi Mount sheath, BUT... That just gives me more fun, as in making some straps of my own from 15 and 25mm webbing and some buckles and fittings ;)
Couple pics (sorry, taking good pics at this time of year is restricted to around noon, so you have to do with these until I can get some better ones::) )...

Anyone here know the qualities of the 14C28N stainless steel?
-
Anyone here know the qualities of the 14C28N stainless steel?
It was new to me but here's a data sheet on it.
Sandvik 14C28N is a martensitic stainless chromium steel with a chemistry optimized for high quality professional knife applications. The chemical composition provides a unique combination of properties including:
Excellent edge performance
Very high hardness
Good corrosion resistance
Sandvik 14C28N is mainly recommended for knife applications which put very high demands on edge sharpness, edge stability and corrosion resistance. Examples are pocket knives, chefs knives, hunting knives and fishing knives.
http://smt.sandvik.com/en/materials-center/material-datasheets/strip-steel/14c28n/
Reviews and reports online are very favorable on edge toughness/edge retention. My limited tests confirm this.

Sandvik 14C28N is mainly recommended for knife applications which put very high demands on edge sharpness, edge stability and corrosion resistance. Examples are pocket knives, chefs knives, hunting knives and fishing knives.

Reviews and reports online are very favorable on edge toughness/edge retention. My limited tests confirm this.

That confirms that tge cansbol will replace the Mora 2000, and that the sheaths are interchangeable. Even with the Mora 2000 :o
I hadnt even thought of trying that.

is it an upgrade over the 2000?

Robert, you truly adore this knife. Somewhat sadly that AKC Forest and some other great knives don't get this much coverage
-
I'm really happy with my Garberg. Strangely, the multimount sheath parts don't really work; the over-hilt strap is too short on mine, so it doesn't have enough length to snap closed.
-
I was wondering about the multi mount system. I figure I will just make a leather sheath. Just waiting for it to come out in carbon steel.

I wonder when that will happen. The reason they didnt make a carbon steel one right now is because the kind of carbon steel they usually use warp when heat treated with such a long thick blade and tang. Atleast thats what Dave Canterbury said, and he helped design the Garberg.

I like all of those, especially the Genesis and the AKC Forest, but I'm a Mora guy. I have tremendous confidence in the brand.
BTW, I've considered buying all three of those at some point but the Garberg has really made them harder to justify. So, for now, I snagged another Garberg (while they were on sale) to put back as a spare. Will probably end up giving my Landi Bushcraft to my SIL or Cousin but will keep my BRK Kephart. I really like that one... :D
-
Those are beautiful and probably quite the performers.
Somehow I knew you'd like all of those. Garberg really tapped into that market and only thing that can really set the other options apart at this point is the handle and sheath materials.

If Mora somehow managed to put out a Garberg in carbon steel with micarta scales they would create even bigger competition for many companies that follow the same recipe - carbon blade + micarta

Only problem I've had with fire starters like these is the smaller rods break when they are being used. Almost need a steel core inside to keep them from breaking when your smurf-bottom is on the line.

What's the intended use of the Eldris?

Have to say, the Eldris looks more like the little brother of the Kansbol.
Might have to pick up an Eldris at some point as I love the Kansbol. Just waiting until a local retailer has them in so I can handle them in person. For a knife that small, not sure how it will feel in hand.

There kinda like a patch knife. Make small cuts or use them for fine carving. I have never handled one, but that is the impression I get.

Perhaps a safer option than your run of the mill folder that one would use (because being fair most people don't use high quality folders with strong locks or backsprings)
-
I know this is an old thread, but figured this fit here.
I just picked up a Garberg with the multi mount sheath. I like it, it certainly seems well built and worth the money for what it offers. But I can’t help wondering if I really need such a bomb proof knife. My other moras have always done fine for me, so maybe this is overkill.
For those of you that have the Garberg and other moras, what are your thoughts? Do you find the Garberg to be better enough to justify the price?
Edit to add: I’ve also read that some people find the handle slippery. It’s obviously not as “sticky” as the rubberized handles like the eldris or companion, but it doesn’t seem slick to me. Anyone have any issues with it being too slippery in use?

Congrats on getting a Garberg mate .
I'm a big fan of the Garberg, I own 2 stainless versions (one multimount and one leather sheath) and the Carbon version with leather sheath.
Do I think the Garberg is worth the extra bucks...?
Yes, I do...
They use a better steel than on their other knives, it's a full tang construction (and a real full tang, I dislike those 5 or 6mm thick knives that, when you remove the handle, are ridiculously skeletonized). And the handle material, while nothing fancy, is very durable and in my opinion more comfortable to work with than the softer more ruberized ones.
If any other brand would sell a knife with those specs for that price it would be considered great value for the money, but in my opinion Mora is victim of their own succes, I mean, what knife can beat a Mora Companion when it comes to value for money? Right, none, and neither can the Garberg.
But I still prefer my Garberg when I don't really know what I might come across during my hike or camping time.
-
Thanks for your input!
That’s basically how I was thinking. I just get wrapped up in whether I really need the robustness since I’ve never managed to damage or break a regular mora.
What are your thoughts on the blade thickness? I’ve got a Companion HQ robust which has the same blade thickness, so I assume it would perform the same. Basically really good at wood work, not so great at food prep or really fine carving.
-
Blade thickness is always a bit of a compromise, the Companion is better in food prep and fine carving, but the Garberg is still capable enough in my opinion.
-
Thanks again for your thoughts and input.
I’m leaning towards keeping it and starting to give it a work out.
-

:iagree:
TG summed it up so well, I'm not sure I have much to add. The Garberg is definitely worth the money, and is actually an exceptional value at its ~$80 USD street price. I also have (and like) the Mora 2000 and another Mora or two, but the Garberg is in a different league. The Garberg is the least expensive knife I own that I would recommend as serious hiking/woods fixed blade.
-
Thanks again for your thoughts and input.
I’m leaning towards keeping it and starting to give it a work out.
Allow me to be the devil advocate here, I have high expectation when Garberg came out few years back, but did feel slightly underwhelmed when I got it. And here could be why:
1) It deviates from what I know Mora for, lightweight, inexpensive and functional knives; and more catered towards the demand of full tang/robust blade. I am a big fan for well balanced knife in hand(balance point at the index finger or maybe half an inch into the handle), and most Mora knives do balance really well at the index, making them really nimble and feel light in hand. I think if they did a better job reducing the weight in tang and making it more well balanced, it would feel a lot nimbler and lighter in hand.
2) Not true scandi grind with the micro bevel. Still haven't get around to reprofile the knife, but it could be improved.
3) Guard/handle keep hand further away from the edge than usual. What I love most about Mora is the ability to choke my fingers right up to the edge, and make powerful cuts, but I do feel that near 1/2 inch gap is a slight let down.(I could be nitpicking here).
Later on, I did get a Condor Terrasaur and though it is not as well made(fit and finish) as Garberg, I do feel it addressed all the issues I mentioned above and it is what I imagine a Garberg would be.
