Title: Carpenters axe?
Post by: magentus on November 07, 2014, 03:26:01 PM
It seems it's my week for happening upon new tools. Hot on the heels of my great success in the 30 day challenge, I was tidying my storage room at work and found this sorry looking hatchet;

It's marked 'The Oxford Hatchet Warranted No.2';

It needs rehandling and cleaning up, and I suspect it is a carpenters hatchet as it has a hammer head on it, but does anyone (sparky) know any better?

Nope, looks like what I'd call a carpenter's hatchet as well.  As you say, it's in need of a little (OK, a lot) of TLC, but it'll be nice once it's done. :tu:

A bit of Google-Fu later and I'm fairly confident in calling this a Kent pattern axe.  I'd always thought of it as being an English style of carpenter's axe and it seems I wasn't far wrong. :)

Cheers Gareth. I nearly took a picture of the many nails and screws (yes screws) acting as a wedge to hold the head on. What a death trap!

I'm going to root around the axe threads and sort out how to best clean it up but I'm sure it'll buff up nicely.

A Kent pattern eh? The description makes it sound like a useful bit of kit. Cheers for that.  :salute:

Nice one Sparky! Thanks for the info. When I get 5 minutes I'll start the restoration process and put pics up.

Cheers all  :salute:

Picture of Axe after a 'night in white vinegar' (someone should write a song about this).

Thanks Sparky for the advice. Next stage is to rehandle it. Expect more pics in the coming weeks......
