Title: Any One Like Guns?
Post by: Mike 56 on May 02, 2009, 08:24:50 PM
I like to collect and shoot surplus rifles but these days with ammo and reloading supplies getting so hard to find i am reluctant to shoot the ammo i have saved. I thought would put my 1022 together as 22 ammo is still easy to find. I have had the parts in my safe a year now. I guess it is about time.

Nice looking rig. I have a Ruger 10/22 as well, it's somewhat simpler than yours though. It has a black, Hogue rubber overmolded stock and an 18" Green Mountain fluted bull barrel. I dropped in a recoil buffer too, but haven't done anything to the trigger. I shoot Remington sub-sonics as they don't have the "crack" that higher velocity rounds do. They have decent enough accuracy for rats and feed properly through my 10 round Ruger magazines. No pictures though.

You've really got that tricked out. What components have you used? Personally I like the 10/22,it seems to be one of those guns where's there's no middle ground about how people like them...you either love them or hate them.

Sounds like you have a nice rig. Mine is bore sighted i still have to take it to the range to sight it in. I put a 2lb hammer in it. I also modded the bolt release plate to a auto bolt release and made my own extended mag release. Did you mod the bolt to get the sub-sonics to cycle. Have you seen these 2 and four way adapters in the center of the four way their is room for an extra box of ammo or a weed eater line cleaning kit. Right now i have 1873 Peacemaker clone torn apart on the bench cleaning it up and smoothing up the action.

I agree, The stock is a Butler Creek Folder, the red dot is a knock off Clonepoint 35.00, I also have a compact 4x scope for it, quad rail is a UTG, i can't remember what 2lb hammer and buffer i used, I added the flash hider to make sure i am long enough in CA you have be 26 inches OAL with the stock folded. I ordered a front grip and a bi-pod adapter. Should make a good little bunny buster. My daughter lives close to Reno and they have Cotton Tails everywhere.

I built the 1022 up because before ammo was hard to get i used to shoot AKs and ARs a lot i know it's not the same for me it is more commutable to shoot.

I used to do that too when I was a teen. I had some Mosin 91/30s, an exsniper 91/30, a 91/51, British SMLE, Styer 1901, Mas 36, 2 Carcanos, and some others. What did you have?

I have a few. I used to have a lot but since my eyesight went to craps I don't shoot anymore. Here's some pics.

This is a Taurus model 82. I got it as a high school graduation gift from my Grandma. And yea, I guess you could say I come from a redneck family.

This is my wife's Beretta 418. It's a little 25ACP. Granted it's not the hammer of Thor but I'm assuming it would hard to function after being shot in the face 9 times, and yes, my wife can shoot that good.

This is my NAA 22 Mag mini-revolver. I can't hit the broadside of a barn with this but it's fun.

Here's a couple more.

This is my baby here. It's a Bulgarian Makarov. Before my eyes went to crap I was a decent shot with this. It's not super powerful but it's as reliable as the sun. It literally is the AK-47 of handguns. Inexpensive, unrefined but designed to work even when carried by an untrained peasant who hasn't a clue how to treat his guns.

And this is the 1st gun I ever had. My uncle gave it to me when I was 5 or 6. It's a Daisy BB gun. The ducktape isn't there for decoration, it's holding it together. But it still works. Although it's difficult to shoot accurately since the barrel is curved to the left. That's Bo the cat with it. He passed away near Xmas of 2007.

I have quite a few handguns. My first real gun was a Beretta .25..it may have been a Jetfire I'm not to sure.. But now, I am primarily interested in .45's. My favorite gun is a Smith and Wesson 1911 PD. I have a BUNCH of Colt .45 variants and I absolutely love them. But, for now, the SW 1911 PD reigns supreme.  :)

I won't even begin to tell you how cheap you could get some really prime surplus military bolt actions in shops here,or some of the really great actions that you'd see offered in things Shotgun News.Of all the non US military bolts I've owned the Swedish 6.5 X 55 was far and away my favorite.Beautiful craftsmanship approaching artwork, and a caliber that was just superb. To give you an idea of how good a caliber it is.Karamojo Bell used a fairly similar 6.5 X 54 Mannlicher Schoenaur to down elephants..of course knowing something about placement helps, but you've got to have a cartridge you can have faith in. Bell also used another favorite of mine...the .303 SMLE.John Masters used a service issue .303 SMLE to take out a pair of tigers that were terrorizing a village near where he was posted when he was serving in pre-war India with the 4th Gurkhas.

Nope, didn't do anything to get the sub-sonics to cycle they just seemed to work fine. I have even used CCI Stingers with no problems. I kind of like the stock magazines as they don't get in the way like some of the high-cap mags do. I use weed eater line for cleaning too, works great with a Hoppe's #9 soaked patch.

Hey Mike 56, how come only one of you ak's has a monsterman grip(that's what they call it right?) on it? Good looking ones you got there. Too bad ammo went through the roof on those things . I still have a few shotgun new's form around 10 years ago when a case of 7.62x39 cost about $80. I wich the days of cheap ammo would come back. That and sks's for under a $100.

The AK with out the Monsterman grip has a bullet button i made you need a bullet or a tool to remove the mag. They consider that to be a fixed mag. The mag is a thirty rounder that has been permitly modified to hold ten rounds. I am afread the days of cheap ammo and guns are gone for ever. I still surplus 54R and 8mm Mauser left from the good old days. If you are looking for a good bolt action rifle gunsnammo has three Finnish M-39s left with pre 1899 receivers you can buy these rifles with just proof of age no paper work shipped to your front door. The Finns built these rifles on captured Russian receivers they are very accurate. Here is the link http://www.gunsnammo.com/.

While he finns are nice I think I'd still just get a russian considering one local store had them for about $110 last month which isn't bad. The only thing that holds me back is the fact that 7.62x54 isn't as cheap as it once was and it's just another caliber I have to buy. Besides I have my 03A3 for a bolt rifle.  :D

Here is a good black powder forum these guys are the real deal. http://www.voy.com/60048/ The Ruger ROA black  powder pistols are very well made but sadly they stopped making them. You can buy them used but the are pricey. My Pietta 1858 Remingtion NMA is a nice pistol and a lot less money than the Ruger ROA. You can load them pretty fast after you get the hang of it. They sell a bench loader that helps and you can also make paper carts using cigerette papers or tea bags. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=144094 This is a good book to read about black powder shooting. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=121867&utm_source=froogle&utm_medium=free&utm_campaign=9315

I have a great black powder gun story.

I didn't really know much about black powder guns. At a trip to Bass Pro Shops with a friend I bought a cheap 50 caliber black powder rifle. He said he knew about black powder guns so I trusted him. This was about 15 years ago. Anyway, so he gives me some gear that he has laying around. Some odds and ends, he also gives me a powder flask. The kind that measures how much powder you put in.

So anyway, we go shooting. I can see the ball I'm shooting flying through the air and I ask him about it. He says that's normal. So anyway, we had a lot of fun but I still thought it was odd how slow the ball flew.

That evening I'm talking to my uncle(who really does know about black powder guns). He tells me to bring the rifle over and he'll show me the proper way to clean it. So I bring my rifle and gear over to his house. He's looking at it and asks me if this is the powder horn I was using. I said yes and he busts out laughing. Moments before I had told him about how I was seeing the ball fly through the air.

After he calms down and wipes the tears from his eyes from laughing so hard, he explains to me that the flask I was using was for a 36 caliber PISTOL. It's no wonder I could see the bullet flying, it was probably only going a couple hundred feet per second. After I got a proper flask I couldn't see the ball and it kicked a bit more.

I failed to properly clean the one and only blackpowder I had, a six shot revolver.  It quickly rusted and the cylinder stopped rotating and would not even come out of the gun.....it became a wall ornament (until I got married-and other parts started rusting)

Makorovs are very cool guns from time to time you can still find 7.62x25 drop in barrels for them. Surplus 7.62x25 is still very cheap.

It might compare if they were shot out of the same style gun but the Desert Eagle, due to its action and weight, dampens some of the recoil compared to the other pistol.

I think you're mistaken. The Makarov shoots 9X18MM and you can find 380 barrels for it. A 7.62x25 round would blow up the gun. That round rivals the 357. But yeah, the 9x18MM is cheap and not to hard to find.

I like Glocks. A G26 makes a great EDC pistol, 9x19 is a powerfull enough but quite inexpensive caliber too.
If not Glock, I like Swiss made Sphinx too. A Sphinx 3000 is a nice mentoy.

For fun, I like the Walther G22 - cheap munition and quite accurate.

It might compare if they were shot out of the same style gun but the Desert Eagle, due to its action and weight, dampens some of the recoil compared to the other pistol.

Now that's a scary thought.   :ahhh

I've been thinking of getting a nagant but ammo is so expensive.

You can shoot 32 S&W Longs in the little Nagant. If you reload Lee sells a cheap set of dies to resize 32-20 brass to fit the Nagant. You can also use M1carbine dies. I reload using 31/2 grains Unquine and 90grain HBWC very cheap to load.

Makorovs are very cool guns from time to time you can still find 7.62x25 drop in barrels for them. Surplus 7.62x25 is still very cheap.
I think you're mistaken. The Makarov shoots 9X18MM and you can find 380 barrels for it. A 7.62x25 round would blow up the gun. That round rivals the 357. But yeah, the 9x18MM is cheap and not to hard to find.

Boy i got that wrong for some reason i thought they were converting them to 7.62x25  you are right it is 380.

Personally I'd rather have the 9x18MM than a 380. The 9X18 is slightly more powerful and if you buy Russian ammo it's a LOT cheaper. I LOVE "Comrade Makarov". It's not the most powerful pistol out there but with 8+1 rounds of 9x18MM HP in a gun that NEVER jams I feel that it is at least as good as a home defense handgun as a 6 shot 38 Special revolver. Plus I can shoot the Makarov a lot better too.

I need to buy another Ruger Mark ll stainless bull barrel since .22lr is easy to aquire. Or maybe a 10/22 and mod the hell out of it...hogue stock and fluted heavy barrel.

I sure do miss my Remington 700 VTR. The rifle had the older wide ribbed trigger..not the x mark one. Had an intergrated muzzlebrake for those quick rapid shots. Wish it had a fluted barrel for heat dissipation as i think after a day of shooting the triangular shaped barrel lead into sway due to heat build up.

I haven't had any heat build up issues with my .308 VTR.  What caliber was yours?

That's one for all the Han Solo fans out there.  :D

I have to ask though, in what way isn't this just a rifle with bits missing, as it seems to be based entirely around the M-16?  Surly it gets into murky waters as far as classification goes?

In the US the only part of a gun that is considered a gun is the frame or receiver all the other pieces are considered parts. If the receiver is classified a hand gun receiver it can have a short barrel and have a overall length under 26 inches. A receiver classified as a rifle receiver has to be a minimum of 26 inches long and have a barrel no shorter than 16 inches. With out a permit.

My dad still has a 7TCU barrel for his Thompson which he used to competition shoot in IHMSA years ago.  For those not familiar it's a .223 which is resized to 7mm.  That gun rocks.  It's like the multi-tool of guns with it's interchangeable barrels and stocks.

Me too. There's a few I foolishly sold that I'd like to have back. The one I'm still kicking myself over is my 7.62x39 Saiga. I bought it when they were still under $200. Then I went through a period where "Old West" style guns appealed to me and I traded it for a muzzle loader. It was a nice gun with a beautiful stock but I grew tired of it. Now those Saiga's are going for $400.

S&W .38 snub nose revolver (kick myself today for selling)
Which model? I had a Smith 638 that I sold, I bought it for possible CCW but I didn't enjoy shooting it at all. I read plenty of reviews and most said that it didn't kick too bad with 158gr+P ammo but it tore my hands up. Not really a hard kick but extremely snappy. I have a little arthritis in my fingers and they have had something to do with it but I sold it and didn't look back. If I buy another one it's gonna be a heavier steel one.

It was a Model 36.  I know what you mean.  The worst experience with a handgun was firing a friends airweight with +P .38.  Each trigger pull felt like I had a plate of steel in my hand and someone was hitting it with a baseball ball....CRACK!

Our department UMP's have single, two round, and full auto trigger sets.  I have minimal use on full auto (simply not practical) but I do have a lot of trigger time on 2 round bursts.

Oh geez your going to open a can of worms with that one.  (Steel vs. Polymer).  I don't have an apples-to-apples for you because my MP5 experience is in 9mm while our UMP's are .40.  I won't say one is better but I will say both are top notch.  I have two SWAT guys assigned UMP's, I offered them brand new M4's in exchange (I wanted the UMP) but they declined and I won't force them to give em' up....they love them....kind of an unhealthy love if you ask me.
