Title: Spyderco Jumpmaster 2 H1.
Post by: Aloha on August 19, 2019, 09:14:53 PM
I picked up the Jumpmaster from Barry.  First off the transaction was flawless as Barry is top shelf all the way.  I am privileged to call him friend and was super happy to try H1 steel.

I've had the knife about a week.  It went right to work with me cutting hose, rope, webbing, and ever some shrubbery.  The blade took some scratches but I expected that from what I've read.  I never once wiped the blade or dried the blade.  I want to really work this knife hard.  I won't abuse it however I wont baby it either.  I did have to take my Spyderco triangle ceramic rods to it already.  Not sure what caused the scalloped part of the serrations to burr on the flat side but they did.  I understand work hardening will happen with fatiguing the steel and sharpening.  I am not really sure how or if I am saying that correctly.  I am not sure how the process works with work hardening but I am curious.

The knife will stay wet until it dries and I will continue to put it back into the sheath wet.  I think H1 is up to the task so I don't consider this abuse.

Here are some shots from today and I will update the thread to see how H1 and the Jumpmaster work out for my work purposes.  The first pic is the knife enjoying a sunny day here in SoCal.  The second is after a washing with soap and water as I didn't realize how dirty its become.  Its a sharp knife and if you know anything about Spyderco serrations then you know they are wicked.

I missed an opportunity to send it to the beach on Saturday .  My partner went kayaking on the bay but I took the knife with me to work.  It was instinctual as I planned on taking with me.  She asked about it but I had already left for work far out East of where where I live while she was headed West so it wasn't simple to take it to her.

Its ok because it'll get its chance soon enough.  Living less that 3 miles from the Pacific means this knife will see salty water.

A friend of mine has a Jumpmaster, not sure which version.......handle is too small for my sausage fingers

Same as the Cold Steel Spartan

I believe you use the edge of the triangle to sharpen the serrations, and if I understand correctly the work hardening that supposedly means the serrated H1 blades are harder, happens when the serrations are ground in, doubt normal sharpening will have the same effect.

What I do know is the serrations work, and you should be very happy with the performance.  :salute:

Spyderco serrations are great.  You've got some big hands my friend!  My hand is snug within but I feel more locked in than cramped.

So far I am loving it.  I've attached it to my work tool belt where it will stay.  I'll snap some pictures today.  I'll use it and re sheath it but I wont dry the blade.  I think over time we should see how it fares.  The water it'll be seeing can range from 000tds to 400tds.  Demineralized water can be very aggressive/corrosive.  We'll see how H1 does over time with no drying of the blade after use.

Worked yesturday which mean so did the Jumpmaster.  I cut thru several feet of twine for a landscaper on the property I was on.  I thought I had given him a Wave a few years ago  :twak:.  Anyway, I rinsed off the knife so I could put it back into the sheath without all the sand and gravel causing scratches.  No drying for this knife.  My Spirit photo bombed.

Long day yesterday.  I use a bucket with organizer for work to keep random things I may need.  I also keep water for drinking and misc other liquids.  I tossed the JM2 in the bucket at the end of a day and again the following day.  I finally decided to take a look at it today.  Its still wet but unfazed.  I won't dry it so back into the sheath and into the bucket.  My vehicle is in my driveway and we've had some really humid days.  I'm also less than 3 miles from the Pacific Ocean and 100 yds from a salt marsh.  I'm sure those conditions over time will tell a tale.  I've had things already began to show rust after the 1st year here.  I don't think the JM2 will be effected but we shall see.

So far so good and this thing just keeps cutting.  No touch ups since my first one.  Just use put back into sheath and carry on.

Aloha, Aloha!!  :D
I am very busy all day nowadays but I couldn't avoid getting attracted by the smell of H1... :ahhh  Yes, my love for this steel is no secret at this point.
It is true that it scratches easily and is soft, but those are two qualities that just add to the "working knife" nature of the beasts that carry this steel.

Truth is, after using the JM 1 for two years and testing the steel in the Aqua Salt and Rock Salt, this JM2 is the blade I had planned on getting next when I get back to spending $ on the hobby. I miss a nice, sharp point on the Jumpmaster  :P

These blades keep on cutting, and don't complain when I leave them wet in the sink or they are attacked by my corrosive sweat!  :D

Glad to see you're putting it through its paces, not many reports on the JM2 on the web!!  :salute:

Labor Day weekend over and the weather was great.  We got out early yesterday.   It was overcast as usual with the sun coming out by 830am.   I brought the JM2 to aid in cutting up plastic and whatever random things we find on the beach left by beach goers.  There are always others thankfully doing the same but sadly people forget/leave trash especially on a busy weekend.  We walk the shoreline about 5 miles out then back.  The surfers were already in the water when we got there at 7am.

We picked up a lot of glass and plastic.  Theres some really random things left on the beach.  The JM2 never broke a sweat but thats no surprise.  It was in its element at the beach.  We don't carry a large bag so we like to cut up larger things so we can fit more.

I totally forgot to take pics of the JM2 sandy  but like usual I only rinsed it off and let it air dry.  Lots more scratches due to sand but the edge is still sharp an zero signs of any corrosion.

In case you're wondering, no I didn't use the tip of the blade to write in the sand.  I used a stick.

I think the more knives we have the more we try to find purpose for those knives.  I'm sure grandpa just used the knife he had in his pocket for whatever he needed.  It sure shows when we see grandpas knife thats for sure.  I have a lot of knives and so when carrying the JM2 I found myself thinking about what I was cutting rather than I just needed to cut.  Being a fully serrated rust resistant knife we think its use is best in a environment where water is present.  The name however is entirely opposite to that unless I missed something.

No I actually didn't miss anything.  I think the H1 steel leads some to believe this knife is more at home in a wet environment and thats not wrong however its design was to use in a plane.  Its interesting how those of us or maybe its just me decide how to use a knife.  Maybe its that I have too many  :dunno: .

So I've been using this knife everywhere.  I used it in my kitchen to cut darn near anything that I'd use a knife for and no surprise its a performer.  Yeah I have the right knife for culinary use but why then heck not use this awesome knife.  I also used it in my yard.  I've cut stray grass along my fence line and even trimmed a few small branches off my apple tree.  What a slicer this one is .  No I have not dried it but I have washed it since I've decided to use it in my kitchen.

No its not the best culinary blade but I wasn't put off at all.  I want to see if this steel performs as Spyderco says.  Its exposure to my salty location and the myriad of liquids it'll see in my use should be an good test rather than just letting it soak in a glass of salty water.

I need to remember to take pics along the way so sorry for that.  I'll be home today cutting more stray grass thats wet from the salty dew and I'll continue to trim some branches from my apple tree.  YES there are better tools but like grandpa I'm using the tool I have.

I agree 💯 with you Aloha.  Most of my family packed Barlow's and nothing else.  My father in law carries a Classic unless he's tinkering, then out comes his Sideclip.
You're exactly right about the name.  This knife was designed to cut paratroopers whose static lines got caught in the works, by the Jumpmaster.  This situation is known as towjumper, where the paratrooper is being pulled along by the aircraft.

@GG, grooming?   :D.  The sand would scratch the heck out of the JM2 but it'd survive.  The edge is sharp and has remained so since my initial use.  I'm going to push this edge harder.  I am not entirely sure how to work harden it other than "abuse"  :dunno:.   Now I say that reluctantly as I don't abuse things.  I understand how work hardening occurs in its simplest definition but in everyday use I cannot see how this would occur on a knife edge?

Along my fence line there is grass that grows that I usually just pull out.  This grass send runner so sometimes its a tug o war.  Having a blade is handy and its normally my Sodbuster.  I decided to go with the JM2 as we know serrations are excellent in fibrous material.

I compost the grass but I also need to cut it down to help the process.  I had some drying so my mixture of dry/green was good.  The JM2 effortlessly ate thru the dried grass.

Its really no surprise it would handle this chore.  I will use this knife as the task presents itself.

I've been told grinding in the serrations work hardens the H1, that's why it's the edge of choice when it comes to H1 Salts.....

My experience has been it reacts very well to a polisher......basically stropping, and that brings back a sticky edge.

H1 is low in the edge retention rankings, it will get dull rather quickly, but the other advantages make up for that  :salute:

Busy weekend for the JM2.  It was dulled pretty good and while I am pretty decent at sharpening I had some trouble with the serrations.  Its sharp but certainly not factory or what I can do with a plain edge.  Its one heck of a cutter tho and its taken a beating so far with not a speck of rust.

Great looking knife.  While I don't always post my knife usage I always use whatever knife I have on me for whatever needs cutting.  What I mean to say is, when I got the JM2 I had an idea of what I'd use it for and did so.  Then I realized I was reaching for my MT blade for other things.  The cutting chores at work aren't precision cuts so it made no sense to not use the JM2.  I get that some like to use different knives for different tasks and I'm like that to an extent as well.  What I find fun is using the fixed blade I have on me for everything.  True the JM2 is not the best kitchen knife  :D but it does the job.

I am finding the steel is on the softer side but thats ok too.  Having just got the BM Contego in S30V has not made the JM2 sit the bench at all.  I'm loving it more and more and the lack of care is wonderful.  I use it and put it away.  When it needs a touch up I do so but worrying about drying it off is never on my mind.  Leaving it in my truck and not worrying about the salt air is not a problem at all so far.

Holy smokes its been a while since my last update.

Truth is, not a lot has changed.  I still very much love this knife and its a flipping machine.  Not a spec or hint of rusting.  It's lived in that same tool bucket over the years.  Its my work horse fixed blade.  Its picked up more scratches on the blade but I think it looks great still.  Its got a few touch ups, I've even considered sending it to Spyderco for a sharpen but I always manage to get it up to snuff.

I'm not surprised how this knife has held up.  H1 is no joke.  If you are looking for a knife that will NOT rust then H1 is your knife steel.

I'm bummed I didn't keep up as regular as I intended.  I can say the adventures never stopped.  I use the heck out of this fixed blade weekly.  Its been one knife that I can honestly say impressed the heck out of me.

Good for you Aloha!  I love H1 steel.  That Jumpmaster is a beast, but it carries so nicely.

A long over due report.  My Jumpmaster 2 has lived in my trucks bed less than 5 miles from the Pacific Ocean.  While many things are showing what the salt air can do my Jumpmaster is still unfazed.  The knife lives on my truck since its my work knife for the most part.

I do not wipe it down or treat it with anything.  I use it and put it away in a bucket with other items.  I have given it a sharpen  with a diamond rod.  Its scratched but thats about all.  I did change out the little lanyard since it was kinda gross.

I am still very much impressed with this knife.  Its a terrific steel and the knife is great in my hand.  Its a nice comfortable weight.  Its listed at 5.4oz but to me that means nothing in hand.  Its balance point is right at the finger choil.

I cannot begin to remember what I've cut in 4.5 years of ownership.  I can tell ya its never failed.  Spyderco serration are superb.  H1 is wonderful.

I am sorry I didn't keep up as I hoped.  I will do my best to take pics this year and update this thread best I can.

I've been wanting an H1 blade for a while now. Sadly the availability and prices here make that difficult.
My bait fishing blade for January was a Svord carbon steel boning knife. A serrated Victorinox paring knife ran backup.

I was cleaning out my truck and realized I hadn't followed up.  Its such a great knife and more importantly the H1 stands up to what its says it should.

Zoid if you get the chance to try H1 I think you'll be more than happy.  I do want to try LC200N but so far I've not had the opportunity.
