Title: Best in Class Tool Components #1: Bladed Tools (prepare for a heated debate!)
Post by: Happy Gilmore on March 03, 2019, 11:00:26 PM

Ok, maybe this will be more civil then I think. However, I really want to break the whole Multi-tool universe apart!

What I want to discuss are the best COMPONENTS! And which tool has this component. Do your best to defend your view point, pictures would be awesome!

I will be doing two things during this discussion:

1. Adding the components that seem to be conclusive to my Pinterest Board:

https://pin.it/55htlznf5zwqz3

2. And in the end I will be using a photoshop like program to construct a monsterous looking multitool made up of those components (hopefully with labels!)

I want to start this off with some clarification..

The category of scissors needs some differentiation. There are simply too many types with different purposes. So....

Scissor categories:

* Small Scissors (aka Vic classic, squirt, Dime, etc)

* Full size component scissor (aka juice S2, Wave, Surge, Pioneer X, etc), this is likely to be a heated discussion

* Shears (aka primary scissor tools such as Micra, Leatherman CS, Craftsman 10 in 1, etc)

And of course their are many unique tools component that need to be mentioned:

Havalon Evolve exchangeable scalpel

Victorinox Spirit Combo tool
(http://victorinoxswissarmyknife.org/photos/Victorinox-SPIRIT-X-Multi-tool-Original-Swiss-Army-Knife-Leather-Sheath-53814-04-ykj.jpg)

Its going to be so fun to make that Frankenstein tool lol. I am sure my opinion will change and I am hoping most of all that people will see tools then never thought or were familiar with.

Cheers,
H.G.

Should be an interesting discussion. I will have to think about what components I would want on a "dream" multitool. However, I know what I would NOT want-scissors. I can not stand scissors on a mt. In fact, I will not buy a tool that has scissors. If I need something cut, the mt will have a knife blade, or I could use the one or two knives that I always have on me.

See, this is why I am so interested in where this discussion will go. As a teacher I use a Scissor all the time, and I would really love a one handed one I can depend on. Speaking of blades, what is the best in class FLAT BLADE?

I'd vote for:

I could be wrong (Please prove me wrong actually) but this is probably the best STRAIGHT FLAT blade found in any multi-tool.

I'd also like to vote for the ST300 as best PHILIPS DRIVER, but I'd like to hear other opinions on this. I found its shape to be perfect because not only is it tough as hell, but being square in shape it can fit a variety of adapters.

I think the Vic Spirit is near ideal all around for me but could use replaceable cutters..

its good average, but would you rather have s30v blade or the one in the spirit? don't think of space constraints either.

On a side note I think the Vic Spirit Flat driver is the best PRY BAR in a multi-tool. Other than dedicated prybar tool obviously..

I'll second your thoughts on the S30V blade.  I chose my Charge TTi for a few reasons and the blade was one.

Blade exchanger.  What a dream for me.  I can swap out different saw blades for whatever material I am cutting.  Lots of options when one implement has such a wide range of utility.

Signal hammer.  I don't know of another MT that has a hammer?  While you wont pound 16p nails into studs it sure goes a long way when a small utility hammer is needed.  We hung a lot of art on our walls so trust me a small hammer is a good thing.

Victorinox MT chisel.  What a great tool to have on a MT.  So much so that I turned my LM flat driver into one for my Surge.

I 100% agree on the Vic spirit 4 in 1, what an awesome tool. Also the Surge has some of the best in class items IMO, the blade exchanger (file/saw), and debatably (very debatable) best full size scissor?

Also the MUT has a ridiculously good hammer + cutter in one:

Maybe we should do this type of thread in stages? there are just too many different categories of tools to discuss at once...

Yea, honestly this thread will be too broad if we don't specify a smaller set of tools:

Lets focus on Bladed Tools:

Scissors
Flat Blades
Serrated blades
Awl
Safety Cutters
Saws
etc..

That is a big list and I am sure I am missing something.

Hell yes! But I think there way to many factors just besides tools. Don't catch me wrong, the Swisstool and Spirit are well made tools, but I rather take a kick in the ball sack than trying to use them again. They are too damn shiny. Just the little bit of diesel, oil or grease gets on them, you can't hold onto them. And for smurfs sakes they happen to fall into dirt while they are oily. That said, they are so damn mint. 100% pure craftsmanship. But they don't work for me. Now the LM Surge is the one for me. However it does have it's faults. It does have a better chance to rust, possibly of loosing bits and etc. But I have had Vic's stuff rust on me too. The Surge ticks so many boxes for me and it is not just the tools and OHO blades.
I don't know, I think you are on the right track H.G., but way to many variables, likes and dislikes.
Maybe I am missing your point also.

Yea, I was going for something a little different. I wasn't suggesting this was about picking the best current tool that has a majority of the best components. What I am suggesting is that we imagine a MYTICAL tool that has ONLY the best of the best in every respect. AKA the best blade, the best plier, the best scissor, the best unique features (like the Vic 4 in 1 and the Surge exchanger). Size is no option, what I am trying to do is get to the nano level. I feel like a resource that, as a community, we put forward with the best in class components might help other decide how to invest their money. It might sway ppl from one tool or another.

However, because there are just so many components to talk about...it would be easier to break it down into categories and do them one at a time. Starting with bladed components.

At the end I am going to make some really silly visual representation of this MYTICAL Tool using some photoshop magic.

So far I think Charge TTi Blade is in the lead for STRAIGHT BLADE. Any challengers?

Cheers,
H.G.

Yes... the NOBLADE blade :D
I think MTs should be bladeless. The reason is fairly simple... it is the one tool that can be easy substituted (by a knife) and also the one that has the most variety both depending on use and user.

I mean people probably can't even agree on the ideal length of a blade. It will get worse when it comes to shape/tip/thickness/material.

Blade exchanger.  What a dream for me.  I can swap out different saw blades for whatever material I am cutting.  Lots of options when one implement has such a wide range of utility.
I agree, especially if you use it on metal a lot. But it also has drawbacks:
- the Saw is quite small for the size of the tool
- Pointless if you do not carry extra blades (that can get lost)
- Quite cumbersome to switch from metal-saw to wood-saw

Signal hammer.  I don't know of another MT that has a hammer?  While you wont pound 16p nails into studs it sure goes a long way when a small utility hammer is needed.  We hung a lot of art on our walls so trust me a small hammer is a good thing.
Totally with you on this

Victorinox MT chisel.  What a great tool to have on a MT.
:tu: Second that

Scissors - Surge, 91mm SAK/Swisstool
Flat Blades - S30V
Serrated blades -
Awl -
Safety Cutters -
Saws -
etc..
Chisel - Spirit/Swisstool

Serrated blades -

Chisel - Spirit/Swisstool

I think the Full size SAK to have the best combo blade out there. I also think SAK has the single best serrations out there.

Best Serrated blade, very debatable since the blade isn't pointed so can't function great as box cutter. BUT HOLY smurf THIS THING CUTS THROUGH ANYTHING!

Best Combo Blade would be from same seriess of tools because the the reverse combo edge is fing genius.

Awl:

I've used a lot of them, and actually the one on the spirit is amazing but the addition of the hook on it really shorten's its reach. The awl on the Alox knives is just insanely good at what it does.

Saw:

Full Size Vic saw is just rediculously good, although I am really curious if there are other contenders. I'd call the exchanger on the Surge a Special feature kind of like the 4 in one. Both would be on this mythical tool imo.

I think today I am going to make the handle image for this tool, its going to have look like a zig zag snake with a whole bunch of tool arms (some from vic, some from gerber, leatherman Etc) I need room for multiple plier heads, and lots of placed for tools hehe.

I think we need to also include secondary blades like the one on the electrician and vic harvester. Both are so good at what they do. And really space is not limited, we can have all of them on in the image.

I always forget about the OG wave scissors..That is the crazy thing about scissors, there are just so many categories for best in class, and each one has a separate purpose...

the 58 mm vic scissors are the best hygine scissors I have ever used. The OG wave has one of the most capable scissors in a small package, the Surge has one of the toughest scissor out there, the 91mm vic has best overall performance and shape imo, the Craftsman 10 in 1 can probably tackle the toughest materials as a shear. I mean...we could spend 10 pages just talking about scissors probably.

maybe we can hold off on the scissor discussion for now, I have no idea where to start on categorizing them.

Also I was thinking about it, I want to include a bunch of info on each tool. I can't do that with that single image idea. Instead I think I am going to make a series of individual images, possibly ones that would be useful for the wiki so that we can have a lot of info in a really small area. Example coming soon.

VIctorinox does a great job on their serrations.  I don't have my Rescue tool anymore but it was pure genius.  I do have a few 111s with serration as well as my Sprirt with butter blade.  I have never had an issue with the serrated bladed on my Vics.

The Pioneer X has two best in class tools:
Scissors, sharp, well formed, each is a piece of art,
Reamer/awl, works really well, but I'm not sure how it would fit into an MT.

+1 for the inline awl on the Alox models. It’s the next best thing to a power tool for driving a quick hole in wood and a dozen other uses.  :tu:

The goal I think is more to give an informed opinion on the best muti-tool components in their class. That way, when someone is looking for say..the best awl, They understand which tools have them.

And yes, I agree, for some reason the shape on both of those tools makes them so useful. I can't figure it out but that awl always drills the best holes.

I don't have the Craftsman 10 in 1 so can't compare them.

At least one think the scissors can cut better than the knife blade is a couple stray beard or mustache hairs that keep annoying you by catching on the edge of your lip.

That's why I like this concept of focusing on the tools themselves. I think its easier to determine the best functional component than it is to agree on the "best" tool. If we can make a really good tier list..it would be insanely useful to me at least..

I had no idea that Vic even made a scissor in a multi-tool that big. It makes me really think about it now.

The blade on the Spyderench is great too... it's a full size folder blade. Something rarely seen with other tools, if ever.
