Title: Oh dear,Kirks started building a railway....again!
Post by: kirk13 on February 06, 2014, 08:16:01 PM
I've been kicking around the idea of making a Miniture model railway for a few years now.

The idea was planted by an issue of Model Rail magazine, where a guy build a layout in a box file. This led me to the late Carl Arendt's website http://www.carendt.com/microplans/index.html

To say I've mulled this over time and time again is an undestatement! But I stumbled over an advet for Kato track, and, last Sunday,I pulled the trigger on this set
http://www.traintrax.co.uk/20890-compact-oval-p-678.html

It arrived today, and,if your all interested, I'll post updates and pictures during construction of what for the moment is being called 'Gordon's Folly '.

Here's the first pic

I always wanted to set up a giant track that went from room to room, floor to floor and all over the house.  You know, like you start the train and don't see it again for an hour or so!  :D

That looks great! What scale is it? And what do you plan to build: A landscape, a town, a village, an industrial setting?

Given that I'm working in N Scale(roughly 1/148), it'll have to be a Classic,but damn good idea!

That looks great! What scale is it? And what do you plan to build: A landscape, a town, a village, an industrial setting?

N Scale, and it'll be scenic, just a watch the train go by layout :D . Only thing I'm certain of is there will be a scenic folly, and lots of trees! I Haven't yet decided if there will be a station, and or a pub  :drink: .

I'm also considering some sort of Neolithic monument

The other underlying motives to 'Gordon's Folly' where that it should be easily portable, that I should be able to set it up,and play,I mean, operate it in front of the tv,and simply that I need something creative to do in the evenings after work!

Building a railway uses all my model building skills, and gives me something to play with when it's finished too! Its a chance to capture a perfect moment in time  :dd:

I've re painted and weathered a lot of my locomotives, and am looking forward to doing more.

The other big question nobodies asked yet is steam or diesel?

The answer is steam, with the odd guest appearance of a diesel :D

:D

Well I think you might know of a place where you could get more parts to make the model grow if you decided to do so. ;) I like Grant's idea. >:D

I really like model trains.  I live watching the work that goes into them and seeing how it worked out.  I watch people work every day and there's just a real difference when you see someone crafting versus doing.

I am really looking forward tov watching this develop.

:D Very true!  This morning was rather pathetic.  The train was 15 minutes late.  The station I was at was actually the origin station for that train.  They took forever just getting it out of the yard, sitting by a switch with the lights flashing and bell going.

I dont know anything about trains or scale, but when I was a kid I was amazed by a train set my Dads friend had.  It was in his rec room bar area, and the tracks went from the bar to all the seating areas, and the cars had drink holders.  So you'd make the drinks at the bar and serve them with the train.  It was cool.

Thank you everyone for your comments and interest :tu:

I'll get to the 'kirkie' replies shortly, but first the more factual update

If you don't like pointless rants, skip this paragraph. As much as I like modelling in N,it can be very frustrating. There is no shortage of motive power, rolling stock or track...people are are in no short supply, end nowadays we're even swimming in good car and truck models, but what the hell happened to the supply of ready build buildings? And when did it get so smurfing expensive? And mostly...Games Workshop, you bunch of smurfing pirates, when did you stop doing packets of trees? Really, gamers like having copses(and corpses) and wooded areas on their battlefields!

Now that I've got that out of my system....

As this thread goes on,please do remember that this is a Miniature layout,as opposed to what Chako created( and,man its gorgeous ),and will run inside a cardboard box!

In terms of what buildings are going to feature,I've settled on leftovers from my B+DCR( Broke and Done Cheaply Railway ). I'm glad I'd bought the extra stuff back in the day when either I had more disposable income,or prices were cheaper! I've decided to dispense with a station/ halt all together, will have a traditional British Pub,and a Folly( hence Gordon's Folly, which incidentally us a family joke about my aunts place in Downpatrick).

The Folly will sit on a mound, the summit of which will stand slightly higher the height of the locos.

After getting back from the pub last night, I started playing around with building placement, and which of the ruins I wanted to use for the Folly, and made an interesting and important discovery...

I chose Kato track for two reasons: firstly, the ballast is pre-moulded into the track( because ,oh my gods,I hate ballasting!); and secondly, they offered very very tight radius curves! The ones I'm use ing have a sub six inch radius(145mm in fact,or two Wenger Rangers toe to toe :D )

I thought the tight radius might cause a couple of problems to the locos, but all my little shunting engines run around without problems. However, there was slight hesitation and juddering when they were pulling wagons, which I couldn't figure out. But last night,in my slightly altered state,I seen the problem when one of my super short German passenger coaches kept trying to climb over the loco...the buffers on the rolling stock and locos keep touching because of the tight radii! I Havnt had the problem with the American sourced models,as they simply don't have buffers(!) ,but I'll have to 'adjust' the British stuff I'll want to use!

That's the situation for now, more later, along with a couple of requests for help, and some pictures

The good thing is it won't take you half a year to build.  :salute:

I have also built a miniature rail in a suitcase...smaller then N scale though. I can't wait to see how yours develops.  :salute:

I agree on the building front. When I built that table top railway, I found that TomyTec from Japan made these cute already built N scale buildings...but they aren't cheap.

I'm blaming Detron for this...I have a plan to use an only 58mm Vic Escort as a load for a flat bed.

And Tom,I'm trying to figure out a way to do the bog roll, just don't try using it to...well use it :D

Bigger upside is that I've found a stash of trees! And all being well a cheap way to make the mound :D

Interesting, my grandfather used to do all the trains, before he packed up and moved some 28yrs ago he had a table in the basement maybe a 4'x8', not only did it have a lot of tracks, but it also had race cars that went all around, over and under bridges of the train tracks! Every time I used to go over he'd race me while the trains were going around! JR

The photo doesn't suggest a lot of progress, but quite a lot has happened! For one,we've officially planted the first tree, albeit by accident

The initial groundwork was laid on Saturday night, and I was waiting to see if the ground would dry properly! It did...and it didn't. For better or worse,I tend to use the same techniques for railways as I used to for model soldier dioramas and vignettes. To do groundwork on them I used to use polystyrene, usually leftovers from packaging, and then cover it either with plaster of Paris for larger works,or Das Pronto clay for smaller ones.

As you've already seen, the layers of the mound were formed with corrigated cardboard,as I'd thrown out all the bits of polystyrene I'd been keeping for  'just in case'. Plaster wouldn't work,as the cardboard would soak up the water and turn to mush, and the local art shop didn't have any Das  . I'd used a generic 'no more nails' adhesive to lay the track, but the brand I'd used had a plaster-like consistency, but felt very dry,so I thought I'd try layer that in around the cardboard, and see what happened.

Well it dried to a lovely hard finish, but there was some cracking, which I'd kind of expected. Unfortunately my attempts to fill the cracks with a fillet of white glue didn't quite work, and this morning,I soaked some kitchen roll in white glue to plaster over, rather than fill the cracks, and this seems to have worked!

The other big step is starting to paint the folly itself. This is made up of two items from the now defunct Hornby Liddle End range, which are pre-coloured resin. I tend to feel that the colours arn't deep enough,so I've applied a ink wash, and an enamel highlight coat.

I've ordered people off eBay... N scale people that is :D,as well as an American Gondola wagon, which will be loaded with a 58mm SAK,and a mini zippo :D

What a sweet looking little project! I've always thought model trains were really cool, what did you use to form the hill? I think its cool that you added another dimension to it rather than leaving it flat. Looks great :tu:

Cheers mate,it's made up of cardboard, filler, kitchen roll and curse words. Chako put in a link to his layout, check it out, you'll find it interesting :pok:

What's the name of the pub?

I think it's the 'Pass me the SwissChamp,I need the magnifier'

It's the 'Boar's Head' :tu:

You should put a cow or a moose near the railway! The station master should have something to do while waiting for the train! :D

Ooh! A dinosaur!! Best would be a T-Rex ready to eat the passenger. But then station master scolds the t-Rex so it goes away pouting...
Oh, dear.. I should go to bed now! I'm getting totally crazy :o

Not much of an update, but one pic

The complete folly, now in its permanent place, with a wash of Games Workshop ink,and dry brushed enamel. I'm rather pleased with it :D

And there's a musing...

I think one of the videos shows a small blue diesel shunter. This had cost me next to nothing years back, but I'd had to strip, lubricate and tweek. But my goodness, its a good runner on this layout! Its short wheel base, and small diameter wheels really suit the tight bends :D

Likewise, the American style boxcars, the gondola wagon the SAK is to be mounted on,really run well, far better than than the British and German wagons. Again small diameter wheels, and, critically, they're boggy mounted! Oh,and I've a caboose on its way too

The same mix was used for the pathway from the pub to the folly.

A high highlight was added using no250 desert sand(pink).

That railroad has a pretty good selection of motive power considering its a one-track short line.   :tu:

Title: Re: Oh dear,Kirks started building a railway....again!
Post by: kirk13 on January 31, 2016, 02:31:37 AM
Yeah...motive power

The  little Bachmann MDT switcher is rated as being pants...but mine is a real little trooper, mind you,I did pretty much strip and rebuild it,but it just eats up the tight curves.

My British tank engines are a bit iffy. My J94 Austerity is now set aside for the Folly, but it's bigger diameter wheels are a bit of an issue, and I'll need to remove the buffers.

The USRA switcher runs ok on light loads, but I suspect there's an issue with the rear boogie on the tender fowling on the coupler...

Shame,I'd planned for steam, but it looks like it's going to be a diesel line!

I can't remember if I mentioned this earlier or not. The Kato track I've used here has a 150mm radius of curve, which is mega tight.

I've come across some Tomix stuff, also from Japan, that drops to 103mm radius, that's 4 inches in old money!  :ahhh

Yes,I think I may be starting to plan another layout

That railroad has a pretty good selection of motive power considering its a one-track short line.   :tu:

It'll be another micro layout like the Folly. I saw a track plan I like,I'll put up a link to it later. It'll either be more scenic than the folly...ie more topography,or an industrial layout...or a military one.

Or something else altogether

Luke, that has some interest, though steampunk or alternative history might work better. The real problem is the amount of scratch building that would need doing, and in 1/144 scale at that!

Mind you,I am now thinking Moonbase Alpha ....

Funny enough,I've sold people trains just like that, for that purpose!

My original plan 15 years ago was to buy beer wagons(Peco used to do British boxcars with branding from the different breweries),stupidly I got sidetracked and never bought them, and they're now discontinued!

Although...there was a railway at the Guinness brewery in Dublin

My parents have still got my old Dinky Mobile...

The company that done the Eagles done the Mobiles and the Interceptor, and I think, the Skydiver,as well as Stingray. I'd been tempted to the Mobile, but it was as cool as the Dinky one ;)

Couple of updates on what's been happening at the Folly...

The J94 has been striped for repainting. I'd been tossing up what colour to paint her...Space Marine blue like the MDT,or wartime MOD colours?

In the end I've done something completely different

I won a second Bachmann MDT on eBay. Runs like a dream straight out of the box! And for £20ish!

I done a bit of reading, and it confirmed that the MDT is great for very tight radius curves, and is loved by those of us who build micro layouts :D

Beats the hell out of a GarFar loco for £75+!
