Title: Center Drive 30 day challenge
Post by: Spartan19 on October 29, 2017, 04:18:21 AM
Hey everyone, just got the go ahead to start a new challenge for the Center Drive. I'll need at least five more people to join in, and we can all do the challenge as a group. I'm planning to start Monday November 6, but I can bump it back if any of you are waiting on one of the new BO models, or are in the middle of a challenge already. Hope to see you guys at the starting line  :tu:

Would be keen to join in however I don't have a Center Drive nor can I afford one right now.
So I'll be watching from the sidelines.
If anyone is feeling really generous - holler.

I don't have a CD either (want to, though!) but I'll also watch this with interest, as it's one of the only new tool designs that appeals to me and seems useful to fill my needs and what i look for in a MT

No prob Guys. Hopefully this challenge may clear up any doubts or questions you may have regarding whether the CD is worth having or not. I know it had some quality issues in the beginning, and hopefully this will change any doubts about it's ability. I've used mine a lot on the job for many different tasks, and it has become my go to MT for work :like: :like:. Hope to see you guys in the club soon :D

I've been really sucking on challenges, but I want to give my new CD a good workout.  It will be my primary EDC for a good while as I want to get a good feel for it.

I'd like to be apart of this, but I'm not sure if I'd be up to contributing as much as required. :(

I don't know what the rules are going to be for this challenge specifically, but I'd like to make it be the CD paired with either a TRAD folder or a SAK, as that's been my combo of choice for some time know

During the challenge I'm going to carry a micra as well so I have some decent scissors. I'm carrying the CD today and needed scissors earlier that it doesn't have, so had to go search for some.

That's fine man. I'm planning on carrying a SAK or a TRAD during the challenge  myself, just as long as the CD is the only mt you carry during the challenge

Mines getting a sharpen and a good cleaning this weekend, it's a bit blunt and gritty from working in the garden with it.

Are we going normal challenge rules? We each post a picture a day for 30 days with each day labelled. Also shall we all use this thread as well to make it easier for a mod to judge that we all completed it. It's worked well in the last few I've joined in on.

That sounds good to me Kev. The only thing I'm doing different is that we are going to be allowed to carry one other knife during the day. So if you want to carry just the CD, or pair it with a SAK, TRAD, or even a micro tool, it's legal for this challenge :D :multi:

I'm pairing it with a Leatherman Micra so I have scissors. The CD should cover everything else I think, especially now I have the blade razor sharp again.

Kevs Day 1

Nice easy start to the challenge. I'm on a training course for the next 3 days so it'll probably be glamour shots for the first few days.

My carry for the 30 day challenge.

Gerber CD, Leatherman Micra so I have scissors, Olight i3E EOS, Fisher bullet space pen, Vic mini driver, and 1/4" drive bits. I've swapped out the No.2 PZ & PH for better quality, and also the imperial hex for metric.

Good luck everyone  :tu:

It's just the standard bullet fisher space pen. http://www.fisherspacepen.co.uk/products.php?Cateogry=2

It's lived in my little pouch for over a year now and has always worked every time I've needed it. It's been great.  I don't like the medium tipped refill it comes with so I swapped mine out for the fine tip and gave the medium away to a member on here.

Kev Day 3

Today was going to be another glamour shot as I was on a course all day again, but my aunties walking stick was waiting for me to repair it when I got home.  Quick easy fix with a combination of the CD pliers, olight torch and a really long skewer. The adjustment button spring had broken so I adjusted one of my spares to fit her stick with the CD pliers and used the skewer to push the spring and button down the tube to where it fits.

This lock on trap one in our workshop welfare has bugged me for a while with the screw sticking out.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4541/38276251712_bf2ca4e3b4_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21jkN7m)

so today I sorted it with the CD. The head was a little chewed up, but still enough to get a good bite on with the bit.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4568/38307596461_8141fa36cd_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21n7rP4)

Now I need to get a couple more screws for the holes without them to ease my OCD a bit more, or 4 matching screws to do it properly.

Nice one.

What do you think of the awl?  It seems a bit wide, yet the material is thin. I want to take some off it's width but because it's so thin I think it will weaken it too much.

I agree Kevin.  That was the first time I used it.  I've used the SAK awl thousands of times but this one seems so thin.  I can see it as a cutter for cardboard, tar paper, etc.

Day 9

Today's usage was while out doing DSEAR area classification reviews at our BOS plant (Basic Oxygen Steel making). No on site pics due to them being atex Zone 2 (triple flare stack) and 21 (de-sulfuring plant) and no cameras allowed due to the flash (and they are too cheap to buy me an atex rated camera), so I took a desk shot of my CD and a bing maps shot of the locations.  Magnesium dust from the de-sulph plant gets everywhere. CD needed a clean with WD and a dry with an air hose afterwards.

Now that's a mill Kevin!!  I grew up about 45 minutes Northeast of Pittsburgh and remember those days.  I think I still have that grit on me!!
Not even close to the heat you deal with, but used my pliers to hold a match to light a burned down candle.

I have run in to a slight difficulty with the Center Drive Thirty Day Challenge..Nothing Wrong with the Tool but The Sheath is starting to fail...and I will Admit a bit Uncomfortable due to it's Width and how low it hangs on the Belt I know it can be carried Horizontally but I don't Trust the Velcro to protect and retain my Asset..Any Other Center Driver Owners Run in to this Issue? I'm Thinking of switching to a Sheath for One of My Gators which I normally Pocket Anyways due to it's Light Weight and stashing the Bit Kit in another Pocket..Right Now until I resolve it I will keep mine on Standbye in my Work Bag and use my MP400..So Far other than a Saw versus a second Fully Serated Blade it is the Only thing I dislike..I will Admit it is a Big Boy when it Comes to Multi Tools...I think on a Tool Belt as a Quick Grab and Do or in a Bag the Sheath is probably Ok but for Belt Carry not the Greatest

As far as Gerber sheaths  go I don't mind it, but you definitely notice it on the belt!

Made up for lost time today.  I was at a boy scout gathering today where they prepped sleds for the upcoming Klondike Derby.  The CD was used big time!  The only tools not used on mine were the cat's paw and the awl.  The scoutmaster summer it up when he said there was finally a MT with a screwdriver you could actually use.

Day 16

This is the job you get when your the first person to be seen by your bosses boss after someone has burnt themselves. I had to make up some Caution Extremely Hot, Burn Hazard, A4 signs for the heating room because apparently the guys repairing it didn't know the steam main could burn them

I suggested that maybe they weren't the right people to repair the pressurised heating system if they don't even know that the unlagged section of the steam main feeding it will be extremely hot.

Cutting up double sided tape strips to stick the 3 warning posters up. It gave me a break from reviewing inspection forms at least.

They were sent to fix the central heating in my building, it's a huge steam heat exchanger and they assumed because they'd been sent to fix it and not told the steam was on, that it would be cold.  I'd have thought the temperature in the room might have given away that the steam was on, or the pipe radiating heat at a high temperature.

Because one burnt themselves they didn't fix it.  He barely glanced it with his arm so not a bad burn thankfully.

I will have to watch from the sidelines for the rest of this one.

Don't worry about it buddy, it happens to the best of us!

Day 20

Went out to do some more slug hunting, but it appears I forgot to put the lid back on last night and the frost has killed my late potatoes

I'd best dig them up tomorrow to see what the potatoes look like

I love your dog my friend!!  Brisk day here...used the cap lifter to pop the lid on a brew  last night at a family gathering, but didn't get a pic.  It's not a bad cap lifter, but not quite in the same league as the Vic's or Wenger.

 Thanks Poncho and Nix!  This tool really is a very handy sidekick to have.  At first it seemed big to pack daily, but it really grew in favor with me.  It's actually very handy to have along!  I sure wish it had a saw though  but even that's no big deal.

I'm curious to know....maybe after the challenge...how you guys feel the Gerber compares to other Multitools.

Keep up the fine work!  :salute:

Day 30

Here we are at the end of the challenge, and I have to say the center drive was much better than I thought it would be. The only tool not used over the month was the serrated blade. It's useless to me and is getting replaced with a U shank saw holder as soon as I get hold of a set of the gerber tool off Loki.

The pliers are pretty good, though when trying to twist off old tie wraps they struggled for some reason. They got there in the end but seemed to slip off way to easily. I wonder if that was the BO coating at first as they got better over time as the coating wore off the jaws a bit. The cutters in the pliers are the usual gerber ones and I chipped them before the challenge and had to turn to the next good face. I wish I knew how to machine these kind of things as they are crying out for some in 420HC like the leatherman ones (I think they are 420HC anyway). Someone could make a killing making and selling those  :pok:. After a month of daily use mine have freed up and the pliers are now flicky and can be deployed one handed as they should be.

The awl is ok for making an X mark and shallow starter hole for screws, but it is way to wide for anything deeper. It needs profiling to make it thinner, but then I worry it will be weak and twist.  It's great as a scraper though and parcel opener, though it's a pain to deploy when the blade is so easily accessible on the outside for parcel opening duties. They definitely need to rethink the awl.

The prybar is good, I have used mine to pry stuff I had no right to do as it was probably borderline too much for it, but it did it ok. I was pushing it as I know others have chipped an edge off theirs prying nails, so I tried to give it a good workout, and it hasn't chipped or broken yet.

The file is good, a bit coarse but does the job quite admirably. It's no better or worse than the type on a LM rebar, ST, etc.

The screwdriver, this is the main selling point of the CD and it's a great tool. The magnet has great retention and it's a strong driver. I've used it on some really right screws and it handled it without a problem. Not a lot more to say about it really, it does exactly what it was designed to do.

The main blade out of the box felt sharp, but the edge retention was crappy. It went blunt so fast when using it to cut bags of top soil open, but once it had a proper sharpen on my edge pro it held up great. I sharpened it at the beginning of the challenge and only had to touch up the edge once through the 30 day challenge, though it's about ready for a good sharpen again now.

Overall I was far more impressed with it than I thought I would be and will now be added to my EDC rotation rather than being just used and abused as a gardening tool.

Nice work and cool pics!
Side note, LM's replacement cutters use 154CM.

Great write-up!

Congratulations on the challenge!  :salute:

Thank you

it was indeed very interesting to read your thoughts on one of the most innovative and promising tools of these years.
If I had it, I think I'd share most of your critics over the tool as well as my impressions on it, given the use you've put it through and the challenges you've encountered.

Thanks for the good follow-up and conclusion to the 30 days Challenge!

There's nothing I could add to what's been written already about this awesome tool.  This is my first Gerber multitask and I've been really impressed with it!  It wears well on my belt, and covers 95% of what I need extremely well.  It's been fun!!
