I used to prefer blue, but after awhile I changed my opinion. Red is more suited for a SAK, no matter the scale. :D

Very nice additions!

I just added a Solo recently to my collection as well.  Mainly just for the Red Alox.  If I ever need Red Alox handles for a Mod I'd probably only be able to bear using a solo as a donor.

There's just something about those Alox units I absolutely love!  :o  That Woodsman is a beaut!  I've had a total
of 4 Alox knives come my way through trades or whatever and my family or friends see them and away they all
went to happy homes.
I've really gotta get out and buy another and this time around I'm going to take advantage of the free
engraving before I leave the store and get my name put on it!  :D  That should fix things and keep in my
possession a little longer.
Thanks for sharing those pics.

to be honest its six of one and half a dozen of the other.  This late in the boating season there are loads of knots in the ropes some of which are beyond hope .We often need to undo the shackles on the mud weights ( Anchor ) so we can use the rope as a spring line for the tide .

When you look at that and think how much they cost    Then look at a Spyderco  :o  I know they have one hand opening and better blade steel but that Alox can sit as your best friend in your pocket for years and cost a fraction of the Spyderco .

I will post pics of mine: Pioneer (no key ring, aluminum liner, old cross, bought from Felinevet recently, NIB); First Mate (I cleaned out the Korean vender for you guys earlier this year).  The Korean vender....I am going to see if I can trade the Pioneer without key ring for one of his that has BRASS liners and key ring...he has a few on  display.  I gave him as a gift a 2008 1 of 1000 USA new Soldiers last weekend, he gave my wife a Classic with light and ink pen.

Why didn't they produce it in 1969?  And then bring it back in 1975?  Thanks for the information.  I got my info from SAKWiki.  It mentions, "The Soldier model was redesigned in 1961 resulting in the familiar 93mm Alox handled knife. These new knives were produced with Red Alox scales from 1961 to 1964, after which they changed to Silver Alox."  It seems the article needs a bit updating.  I think he should take a nice picture of it and send it to SAKWiki so they can show it.  They are obviously rare.

Well, everything you read in the SAKWicki is not always entirely correct. Errors can be made by anyone. If you continue to check the SAKWicki webpage for the Victorinox Soldier you will see a box or table indicating years that NO Soldiers were made and 1961 is one of them. Somehow that info escapes most folks attention and they just see the "1961" year and assume there was such a knife made.

I too wonder why a few years were missed by either Elsener/Victorinox or Wenger in the production of the Soldier or SI knives.

Yes, as always the actual Swiss Soldier or Standard Issue will have the 2-digit year date stamp on the rear tang. Any you find with no date stamps that look similar will probably be from the Pioneer series of knives.

when i get access to my better camera, ill send in a nice shot... and yes the sakwiki needs a bit of updating.... i am currently in the process of doing some REALLY heavy research on the soldier and pioneer series alox knives and will do my best to update the wiki when i complete all of it...

by research i mean going through just about every post on sosaks forums that has ANYTHING to do with alox knives, all the way back to the beginning of the message board... its taken me weeks so far and ive got all the posts bookmarked and half of them scoured for information, just a little bit more to go, then its on to organizing my copy and pasted notes! Ill let you guys know when this is all finished! i may even just start my own "SAK Alox Reference/Research Archive" webpage or something!.... SAKARA(?)  ??? hahah

That sounds like a major endeavor.  Do you have any idea why Vic didn't make a Red Alox Soldier in 1969 but then made them again in 1970, and then stopped again and them made it one last year in 1975?  I wonder how hard the 1975 model is to get, being that any year is hard to get.

Perhaps more important would be a production count for each year if known.

when i get access to my better camera, ill send in a nice shot... and yes the sakwiki needs a bit of updating.... i am currently in the process of doing some REALLY heavy research on the soldier and pioneer series alox knives and will do my best to update the wiki when i complete all of it...

by research i mean going through just about every post on sosaks forums that has ANYTHING to do with alox knives, all the way back to the beginning of the message board... its taken me weeks so far and ive got all the posts bookmarked and half of them scoured for information, just a little bit more to go, then its on to organizing my copy and pasted notes!

You would think Victorinox and Wenger kept those type of records.  The question is, will they release the numbers?  We need a person on the inside.  :salute:  :D

Well I know Wenger won't know as they lost all their records in a big fire.  I can't remember exactly when but some time in the 1980's IIRC, someone will know better I'm sure.

strange about the 1975 one... they must have done two runs that year because i have a silver 1975 one on the way to me right now... does anyone have any pictures/evidence of the red 75?

anyways, i think the info that most people get is the official word from victorinox... they claim the 61-64 in red which is probably when they issued them to troops this way, and then silver in 1965... in their official "timeline" i dont think they report things like spare scales found in storage boxes in the attic or special small runs or anything like that on their official public information....

there is also the slight slight chance that the late 60s and early 70s red soldier models that have been seen were actually issue knives from 61-61 that had their blades replaced... then again my rivets onmy 70 look damn near perfect.

I guess it would depend on how rare the one's past 1964 are.  Since they have a lifetime warranty someone could have sent the knife to Ibach and had them replace the blade.  That would explain the rivets looking perfect.  But I can't imagine there would very many in circulation if that were the only case.

just a heads up, the 1970 red soldier is on ebay for those who might want a chance to obtain it:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270504390742&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

im still working on my alox guide/article and will keep you guys posted! i do have the table that was posted in an old back issue of the Victorinox Blade newsletter and it does show that there was a red alox soldier in 1970 but it doesnt list 1975 as victorinox having a red soldier available.... im wondering where this info came from (where sakwiki got it from?)

It's been a real seller's market on eBay lately.  You should fair very well with all the SAK's you have up for sale, if what I and others have been seeing lately is any indication.  Good luck.

Some more old red alox to drool over. I finally found a Victoria tang stamped Pioneer with the old style Awl and cut out alox scales to match. I noticed the partially hollow rear rivet for a bail. The hole does not go very deep into the rivet. I have never seen one quite like this.

I wonder if it was drilled thirty party in order to attach a bail?  Though looking at it the head appears to be larger than the others or is that a trick of the camera angle?

I think that is a factory rivet. I recall someone cut the bail off a perfectly good NIB Woodsman (? - blade and saw only) to reveal a rivet like that. Victorinox must have found it easier to use a hollow rivet.

2 new arrivals - BNIB
(http://i53.tinypic.com/24whvf7.jpg)
as I understand it, these guys were made with a bail only from the late 60s to early 70s, everything about these is new though. Were they made at another time too?
they can join the others, its possible I've become too specialized here... :P

Great knives !  :tu:
The alox woodsman is the only alox model that was made with a bail until the mid 90s, although the bails were generally discontinued in the 70s.
The reason for this must be that the woodsman cannot have a ring. It`s the thinnest 2-layer alox knife and it has no middle-liner. The 2 backsprings are side by side, that´s why there is no space for the ring-attachment.
All other alox knives could be made with or without a ring.

So I found a nearly pristine example of a 1964 red alox Wenger Standard Issue. The lighting is making the knife look kind of orangeish. More photos follow the link.

An Elinox Voyageur in Red Alox.  I really don't know why they don't make these... maybe they should get some 85mm scissors from Wenger, and put them in a Victorinix Cadet...  I'd buy a few.

Your guess is as good as mine, but i did kinda think the same thing, i read that it was discontinued in 99, when i ordered it offline it said it was brand new, grant it, it might be a older model, i dont know if thats better or worse,  but its still brand new, notta scratch, sharp as they come, and even had oil in the joints that SNAP! thats all that really mattered to me. the old cross ones are great, if you bought it as new, then it would be cool to know if there were more of them being sold. An old cross pioneer sells for ~2x as much as a new silver one, as it is more sought after. you might want to buy a silver one as a user, and keep the other as an investment. Are the liners brass?

I'm pretty sure the brass liners were discontinued before 99, more like around 85. (someone will correct me no doubt). In any case, if you can get more from the same source, I'd stock up on them, its hard to find such old stock in new condition.

Not too many changes  :D. The older one is a more orange tinged red than the newer one
The newer one felt lighter & it weighed in at 69 grams the older brass Pioneer weighed in at 70 grams & yes I took the new one's lanyard ring off to weigh it  :D. I wonder if the brass is the main reason for the difference in the weight between the two

The Reamer is bent, but I think it will staighten without issue.  I'm not sure of the date, but I was thinkin late 50s to mid 60s. Maybe Jazzbass knows; bail, scraper, unpolished, +PAT, brass liners, Elinox/VSSR deep tang on reverse.

I don`t think it can be from the late 50s, then it should have the old style awl (1957-1960). And yours already has the new style saw. Maybe it`s from the mid to late 60s. I`m not sure when they changed from the old to the new woodsaw. Does someone know it ?
I have never seen the oldest version of the alox Farmer with the old triangle awl. The oldest one I know so far is the one in the foto here.

Ditto exactly what duder said - the saw with symmetric teeth dates this to mid-to-late 1960s. I don't have an exact date on when it was changed but it's the same as the 91mm saw. In 91mm knives if you look at knives with the small awl + bail (1962 - 1968), you see about 50/50 distribution between the old saw and the new.  That makes me guess mid 1960s as a change over.

I base all of my alox dating on info from 91mm knives under the assumption that Vic tended to make similar changes across all of it's models at the same time. What you see in 91mm is the +PAT disappears around 1970. So for that Farmer, symmetric teeth and +PAT = c. 1965-1970.

I've also never seen a Farmer with the large triangular awl. I've always wondered if they existed, though.

Thanks guys; of course you're right I forgot about the triangle awl, not to mention the saw.  I'll have to think about these things a little more before replying which is one reason I tend to leave dating to you experts.  :salute:

i have noticed on the old style cross the variations on this emblem.

We know from 1957-2000 some of the production vary. First one would think that yes of course the Elinox stamped era 1957-1974 got the worst details.
The one on the left is a small v victorinox stamped from 1975-1985/6 and got a more pleasing cross. I have one that is even better but i could not find it. If done correct it get a more 3D effect.
In the middle Pioneer Rancher with Elinox stamp i would say 1970-1974 . This cross is the worst.
The right is a small v victorinox stamped Rancher with keyring from i would say approx 1980. This cross is ok.
It seems they vary alot from the beginning until the end. This is probarbly a production reason with the color or anodizng process, i can not say. All i can say is that some of them is much better in detail on the emblem. Difficult to picture. It may vary even on the Victorinox stamped ones, look just like the old Elinox era.

Interesting.  You're really studying the small details now.  I'm sure like you suggested some of the differences are due to different machines and other minor process differences.

It seems like for the parts they all just end up in bin for the same part, and what comes out when they assemble something can have a variation, even ones assembled together.

Also, the machinery will have wear and tear, so there will be deterministic variations within the same generation of equipment, ref the wear markers for the stamps inside the scales. But, I guess everybody already thought of that.

How does the 4 layers feel in the hand?  The farmer feels "just right" to me, better than a soldier in fact.  I very much enjoy the shiny aged look my used white cross red pioneer has, I just wished it had a bit more girth (:P).  Urban pioneers seem like a great SAK for sure!

I find the anodized finish wears down pretty quickly by itself, my alox classic looked pretty much like some of the above with a year sitting in my jeans pocket with my keys.

The 0000 steel wool makes them nice and shiny, which is hard to capture on camera.  If you have some, give it a shot.

I saw that Pioneer too, but $43 is about $20 more than I want to spend on a white cross Pioneer in the shape it was in.

I have struck out several times on color Farmers, so I was happy to get this one, so much so that I might scale back on buying (still need cadets and exotic wenger tools for some 84mm mods though).

I bought a lot of 10 from Austria a while back just for the Red Pioneer that was in it. I sold most of the other knives and ended up with the pioneer costing me less than $10.

AND when it arrived it was an old round awl one. WIN.

The way prices have gone lately that would cost major dollars to pick up now.

Unless there is anything interesting, you should throw the others back online and even a couple of dollars each reduces the cost of the Farmer.

Gots to love that red alox variant strain of the disease. The one with the small clip blade was my latest grab. All but one of these have Elinox blades still. Few more NIB red Pioneers that were camera shy and stayed in their room. ;)

Those are real beauties and the red Alox seems sooo right - the red color makes the knife instantly recognizable.

If only I could make Alox scales for my 91mm Tinker.  :dd: I love Cellidor, but they get scratched up too easily. To my dismay, I discovered today that the front scale on my Tinker somehow got some bad scratches. These are superficial scratches, but they look really bad, they ruin the whole look of the knife... The majority of the surface is still shiny but there are few sharply visible scratches

Alox + backside tools = SAK perfection = a happy, happy man

I removed them. Basically any alox I carry I grind them off.

Funny you should mention it as 15 minutes ago I finally decided to remove the key ring from my one remaining old cross pioneer.

Such a beautiful place!

So Gusto do you have a specific way that you remove the key ring nubs? I’ve been thinking of removing them from my farmer and farmer x. My approach was going to be cut off as much as I can with some metal shears and then file the rest down with a Dremel. I’m curious since you’ve done so many perhaps you have a better way of approaching this.
Title: Re: Red Alox
Post by: gustophersmob on April 07, 2023, 10:18:34 PM
Yeah, here’s my process:

1) I remove as much as I can with some diagonal cutters
2) I tape off around the remaining nub with one layer of electrical tape.
3) I use a small, variable speed, hobby bench grinder from harbor freight and on a higher speed remove as much material down to the tape as I can (need a steady hand)
4) I remove the tape and slow the speed of the grinder way down and slowly get it as flush as I can. This is the most nerve wracking part. I’ve not found a way to get it flush while protecting the scales as even a few thousandths of an in thick of tape leaves a noticeable bit of the nub when removed
5) finally I use a needle file to nock down the edge and smooth out the grind lines.

The key to it all is slow and steady.
