I've been neglecting my mighty Swisschamp as of late, and really enjoyed putting it to use today, so here goes: 30 days with 1 awesome piece of kit!! I've got a hike with the boy scout troop that my youngest belongs to in a couple weeks, so I hope to get some good use out in the woods for two nights out. In addition to work, I've plenty to keep us busy here on the ranch so hang on for the ride!!
-
Good luck buddy!!!
-
Good luck Barry :tu: Shouldn't be as much of a problem this month since you just went through the minimal SAK challenge without problem :D :like: :like:
-
Best of luck to you!

Good luck sir, sounds like a great choice for the job at hand!

Thanks everyone! Day 1 saw the pliers getting put to use. Springtime has hit Pennsylvania and with it we've had issues with Deer Ticks. I used the pliers to grab one each off the coats of our two sheepdogs. They're just tiny enough that I couldn't get a pic to post. Just 10 minutes ago, my son used his Swiss Spirit pliers to pull one off me that had started to bore in. Mild winter didn't do us any favors with these guys!
-
Who says these pliers aren't handy! I had a stubborn watch stem that the Swisschamp pliers are tailor made to fix!

I had a borrelia infection caused by tickbite in november 2015. The photo shows the telltale red ring in the back hollow of my left knee. I was on antibiotics for two weeks and suffered no ill consequences (as far as I can tell).
BTW Succes on this challenge! The SwissChamp will handle almost anything!
-
Good luck with the challenge. It will be fun using your Swisschamp for 30 days. :tu:

Go get 'em BR!
-
Thanks everyone!! It should be a lot of fun! Thanks for posting that pic Ronald. I've never seen the "ring" before so now I know what to look for. I've known a few who've had Lyme disease and hope to avoid the ranks in that club if I can!!
-
As you probably know, almost everyone with outside jobs will get bitten every now and again. Many farmers, foresters, military personnel carry borrelia antibodies as a sign they have been infected. About 1 in 10 bites will get you an infection (in the Netherlands), about 1 in 10 infections will get you Lyme's disease if left untreated. Beware though that the ring looks different each time.
-
Thanks for the tick tips Ronald :tu: We have plenty of them down here where we live as well :ahhh
Great pics and uses already Barry  :like:

Thanks Ronald and Poncho! Spent all day in classes relating to work, so coffee was the drink of the day!

That's a great combo, B!

Swisschamp sure sounds like a fun carry. :tu:
Might be hard to go back to less layers.

One of my favorite tools that I wish was on every SAK is the small straight tip screwdriver on the back of the 5+ layer Vic's. Coupled with the chisel, it really works into my needs, especially whittling and small tool repair. My Dad was an airplane pilot/mechanic and my grandfather a farmer, so I was raised by real life MacGyvers who created tools to solve problems. Neither of them were SAK guys, but I think they would have loved the Swisschamp!

That's awesome! My dad got me my first SAK when I was 8 but he was always a Buck man. He had a Buck and a handkerchief in the back pocket at ALL times.

Cool background on your dad and grandfather. I bet you are right ....I am sure they both would have appreciated the Swisschamp.
-
Thanks El C and Vicman! My grandfather always had some unknown make Barlow and Dad packed an old scout knife until the PST came out. I think he had to be one of the first to buy one, and carried it until 2005 when he gave it to me. Unfortunately, I lost it at work one evening, but that's a story for another time..... >:( :P
-
I've only just picked up on this thread Barry but you've clearly gone from one extreme to the other. Good lad you're obviously making the SC earn its time in the spotlight. Come the end of this can we expect an epic month with a Classic ?
-
Ha!! No Bill, I'm thinking either the Explorer or another 4 layer. I felt lost not participating in 3 Layer Thursday or 4 Layer Friday! :ahhh
-
Light day so far for the Swisschamp. Used the small blade to open a box. The day is still young!

That's one of the main duties of my SAK too. :tu:
-
I prefer the small blade for opening boxes too. I use it more than I use the large blade. :tu:
-
Come to think of it, there's not many tools on that champ that can't help open stuff... Maybe the magnifying glass... But I guess you could always BURN your way in, lol.
-

That's good to hear Barry. On the bright side you're already set for SwissChamp Sunday :2tu:
-
Used the scissors to cut open some plastic bags today. I like the feel of this knife. The width actually makes gripping it nice for my medium sized hands.
-
I started using the small blade to cut open packages way back when I worked in a small drug store and we got our shipments of goods in. Back then all I had was my Huntsman and I wanted to save my large blade. I've carried the habit with me all these years. Back then, newspapers still came bundled in plastic cord, but that was a few years prior to the parcel hook!

I agree about the size of the Swisschamp. It does have a nice feel to it.
It is my favorite EDC knife. I have carried one since the Swisschamp first came out. :tu:

That's a chunky calulator you've got their Barry. I had a wedge shaped Texas Instruments job when I was at school. I was amazed how much fresh air was inside when I changed the battery.

:like: Now that I think about it, I rarely use the caplifter on bottles, it's generally something similar to what you're doing there!
-
Thanks Poncho! I agree Lisa, the screwdriver tips see more use than the original intended purpose of the tool here too. I think I've actually used the cap lifter and can opener more on bottles and cans for this thread than I have in years!
-
Fixed the spot in our kitchen where the linoleum lifted with the caplifter.
Good use for the cap lifter Barry. I mostly use the caplifter as a light pry bar, but I also have used it to tighten screws. Once in a while it actually gets used for opening caps. :like:

In time Bill! For now, another use for the parcel hook. I used the hook to open up a box containing a pen for our puppy to play in. The hook removed the packing staples with no problem! I then used the hook to pull the fencing from its box.

Now that's interesting Barry 'cos I'd use the pliers too ... but only so I didn't have to go near the stuff. I decided years ago not to bother with the abominable concoction and now you're making me think I should give it a fresh try ?!

I treat myself to one teaspoon of it every now and then, just straight off the spoon. It's very sweet, but oh so very good. You should try it at least once in your life.

Many of my co-workers had never tried it before, so I brought in a jar for them to try. It was an instant favorite! I generally don't give testimonials, but this product is too good to be true and should be tried, kind of like Nutella needs to be tried at least once.
-
It sounds good Bill! I've never had it but I'm going to find some! Lisa, I actually had some on the Appalachian trail last summer and it was awesome!! A Dutch hiker let my son and I try some of hers. Now I've two things to look for  !! Glen it actually handles pretty well with the pen. I like the extra girth when I'm using the chisel and the can opener too.

Awesome work!
I really see the functionality of the champ but I have never handled one I must admit.. But I quickly became comfortable with the four layer that I thought was huge when first got it.. Maybe have to take a look after my minimal challenge..
Anyway awesome work!
It's not failure if you learn something from it
-
Thanks guys! It seems big but the added girth actually feels good in the hand. You're right Poncho. It's the one that does it all! Here's mine out on the road with me today!

+1 to this Barry, it's one of those things, a bit like a bumble bee, that looks like it shouldn't work/fit but just does. I was quite sceptical of the SC until I had one in my hand and it just worked right. The only thing I say is you've got to have a pouch for it if you value your pocket linings and your comfort :dwts:

I have carried a Swisschamp ever since they first came out and I must be one of the few that carries it in my pocket. I usually carry it vertically in my front left pocket in a denim pouch. I have carried so much stuff in my pockets over the years that it does not bother me.

In time Bill! For now, another use for the parcel hook. I used the hook to open up a box containing a pen for our puppy to play in. The hook removed the packing staples with no problem! I then used the hook to pull the fencing from its box.
Wow. Thanks for finding another use for the hook!
