Title: Two Ratchets and the Phoenix Tinker
Post by: magentus on April 20, 2017, 03:39:01 PM
Thought I'd show some comparison shots of my two mini-ratchets with the Phoenix Tinker.
The Sealey Ratchet is slightly shorter and thicker than the Topeak.

Both have a two-way action, unlike the Vic ratchet. Both tools are solid - the Topeak is the more elegant looking tool, but the Sealey is probably easier for for people with chubby short hobbit fingers (me). I like both ratchets, (and they perform equally well), but the Topeak is of all-metal construction, whereas the Sealey has a plastic direction lever. The Topeak also has a thumb wheel for finer adjustments.

Both ratchets have a non-ratcheting socket to use as a more conventional screwdriver - the Topeak has a magnetic holder, the Sealey relies on a ring and ball mechanism - both good.

I can't see it makes a big difference, but the Topeak screams high quality (and is double the price of the Sealey). For your extra money though, you get a solidly made nylon pouch which houses 10 bits, a magnetic bit holder and a couple of plastic tyre levers.

Either of these high quality ratchets plus a 4" adjustable wrench, coupled with a SAK of your choice, (The Mighty Phoenix Tinker in this case), and you have a sweet mini tool kit.

Sometimes 2 ratchets are better than 1... If you know what I mean...

Doesn't that defy the laws of physics J-Man? I imagine that's how wormholes are started

I happen to have three ratchets close by at the moment. If reality dies out in the wink of an eye, you'll know why.

Hahaha... just plain logic on my part... if needed, one ratchet can be used to apply force... the other to torque...

I know it's two-piece Thursday there, but if you dim the disco ball and the lava lamp, we won't notice so much.  :)

How difficult was it to find a phillips head bikini anyway?

The Topeak feels like better F&F overall, although the Bosch is a decent contender.

Full specs here:
https://forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=69755.0

The lever on the Bosch is larger, making it easier to use, but it also extrudes a bit.

I was a fan of the Sealy, but now that I see the Topeak with that fine tuning thumb wheel, I think I'd like to get one of those.
I think the Sealy was more of a UK product when I first looked at them a week or two ago from another thread you had shown it in.
Thank you Mags for showing them side-by-side.

Thought I'd show some comparison shots of my two mini-ratchets with the Phoenix Tinker.
The Sealey Ratchet is slightly shorter and thicker than the Topeak.

I like the look of that topeak one. I use a halfords professional 1/4 drive one, it's a bit heavy if you want to carry it and it doesn't have the bit driver bottom like that one does.  I used to carry it daily with my surge, but it sits in a drawer most of the time at work now, along with the little bahco.

FYI
The Topeak ratchet is available in 3 variation, there is one without extender and tyre levers and another version with a hard case and chain-breaker (Image by Aleph).
Also from Topeak is the TorqBar

The Topeak Ratchet Lite I think is now replaced with the DX version... Though can still be found...

Was just browsing Topeak's sight... Now they have the Ratchet Rocket Lite NTX version... Nano TorqBits? Something new for me...
