Jaydar's post (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,24230.0.html) about his '66 Soldiers got me wondering if anyone else EDCs a rare or hard-to-find model?
Pics encouraged! :pok:

I carry my 2010 Damascus Pioneer every day!

Does the Vic Skipper count as a hard to find model?
-
Blue Alox Farmer (not that rare)
I used to EDC my Kershaw A100, even took it mountaineering. I stopped after joining MT.O (and switched to a Crunch).
-
For about a week one time I carried my 32' Soldier.

Oouch.. :o Please don't.. :pok: :D
-
I have an EDC Scientist model and Yeoman model I carry pretty often.
-
I carry an 84mm Golfer quite often. Not exactly rare, but discontinued and not always easy to find.
-
Depends on the day. Have a 73 Soldier that sees lots of use, a Scientist I have EDC'd here and there, and a Passenger that really sees a lot of use. I'm hoping an incoming Yeoman (or two) will supplant the Passenger, but with a 70 year old Soldier also on it's way to me I am going to have a hard time choosing. :)

Oh man!
-
I frequently carry a vintage Red Farmer.
-
For about a week one time I carried my 32' Soldier.
I've heard these older models are quite the nail-breakers. Was one week all the ol' fingernails could stand? :P
-
I guess carrying the rare ones is more common than I had imagined.
-
I often carry my own mods and I know some of them are one-of-a-kind, does that count? ;)
In seriousness I do carry a 84mm Golfer quite often and a Scibeer blue Farmer+scissors mod that I could never replace, AFAIK he's just not making mods any more, and it just wouldn't be the same doing it myself.
-
Firesteel Soldier and '78 Soldier are being used on a regular basis :D
-
Does the Vic Skipper count as a hard to find model?
No I'm afraid not .
I'd love to carry my First mate but its NIB and I just can't bring myself to do it .
Dunc

Yeah, I toyed with the idea of EDCing my first mate but didn't want to ruin it shiney newness :) I don't think I could bring myself to EDC a rare SAK or MT. The only time I'd do it is if I had two of the same tool :)

That's kind of what I was thinking. If I had two of the same tool, I may be tempted to do it.

I have a bad habit of buying cheap and easily replaceable knives just to use. The Climber and an Evo 10 work very well. I also have one of the Gardener models to cut food if needed. However, lately an 108mm GAK came into my possession in a very good condition and i am planning to carry/use this one as well if that counts for a rare knife. But i wouldn't consider carrying anything worth more than 50 Euros. Just can't bring myself to doing so.
-
at the beginning of the year my wife and i spent a weekend in zurich. as we were roaming through the fleamarkets (3 of them actually) i found an old 1969 alox soldier pretty beat up. i restored it as good as possible and reshaped the blade.
although i was looking for a birth-year soldier (which would've been a 1970) i wasn't successful, but this one was close enough. i edc it since whenever i wear a jeans with a fifth pocket. for my liking the soldier is too big for front pocket carry.
i have a ribbed alox cadet on the way which is going to fill that gap, whenever no jeans is possible.
i used to edc an alox bantam when business dress was due but this one is not really rare...
cheers, hp

I don't EDC a rare one, but I often carry one. Although all the knives in my current EDC combo are custom, so in one sense they are rare I could not just replace them. Some of my rarer ones I do carry from time to time, but I often have more than one copy of them and that does give me some peace, but I would be sad to lose any knife becaue if I'm carrying it I really like it. I have quite a few saks, but probably only 10 or less that I would not carry at some time because they are good historical examples in Ex or better condition. I would not have a need to carry an XAVT or XXLT either.
Unless it's a premo example in Ex to Mint condition I say carry it if you need to. Often if you have a few SAKs you don't really need to carry the rarer ones... but sometimes it's nice to pull out your knife by the shackle and put it to work.
-
I don't hesitate to use my Seaman whenever I need that Marlin spike (for paracord work, or when I need to loosen a very tight knot after climbing...)
-
With a bit of luck I am having a 1943 modded with some very nice carbon fibre which is planned to become my EDC ... (The scales on the otherwise mint 1943 had been snapped at some time in the past so I dont feel bad about this mod)
In fact I have plans for a few more to be restored :) I will only mod when they are not viable as a knife most go into the collection after a bit of light restoration work (or in some cases just a damn good clean)

Not really EDC,but twice a year I use a yellow alox Bantam.

I'm with Gareth, I carry my own mods, usually a Tinkman/Sportinker, whatever you want to call it :P Sometimes I carry a mod I had Scibeer make a couple of years ago too. No rare factory models though.

From time to time I carry 38 Wenger SI. But not very often, just for that nice feeling.
I often (today too) EDC Wenger Metal 50, if it counts as "rare model". But I wouldn´t EDC it, if I would have bought it as New (for that money!!). But used Metal 50 as EDC is good for me.
(It is something like "smaller Alox with scissors and corkscrew". :) )

jaydar, your collection is amazing! :tu:
-
I carry my 2010 Damascus Pioneer every day!
I EDC mine too, but it only leaves my suit-pocket for letter-opener duties... and judging by the immaculate look of yours, I'd venture that you also avoid heavy-duty chores with that baby... ;)
-
BTW I EDC a BO Spirit X CC... When they first appeared online, they were supposedly available in limited quantities only... ::)
Whoa! Almost forgot I also EDC my '78 Soldier... :-[ It lives in a CC organizer inside my bag...
-
Well there is the 1950's Drawer :)
Can I get some information on this cabinet? I would love to have something like this, but I don't know where to begin searching! My father has a giant map cabinet, but it's pretty unrefined...
-
Necromancer! :ahhh
-
I EDC my '99 Soldier.
But where this topic was made, it was only like 10 years old. :D
Mechy, do you EDC anything rare?
-
Ron Who and I EDC our limited edition BuSchroders regularly, and there's only two of them in the Known Universe.
-
I used to EDC the Wenger Snowbeast, until I found they were worth, like, millions.
My one is a bit knackered - the main blade is a bit of a stiffy - but nothing is broken.

I do carry and use my Swiss shArK from time to time. Quite rare with only 52 pieces made 8)

Nobody pants w@nky old Masturwaiters :iagree:
-
I guess my one-off Pabsman is no good then?
That's okay. If you try to use the corkscrew on it, the liners will bend and then break. Shoddy workmanship.
That Swiss ShArk is very classy. :dd:
-
My EDC includes (but is not limited to)
- a BuSchröder (mod by Magentus, #1 of 2)
- a +B Carver SW (Swiss Bianco limited edition, 1 of 100)
- the Green Hornet (mod by Magentus, unique)
- the Buccaneer (mod by Bob Lessard, unique)
-
Nobody pants w@nky old Masturwaiters :iagree:
Hey!!!
-
I carried a Voyageur in my shoulder bag for a short while, for the sole reason that I liked having it near! I don't think I ever used it. If I'm honest I don't really have a need for it except as a nice collection piece.
-
If there was a limited edition of just two, I'd hate to have #2!
Just sayin'!
-
Maybe mags can make a #3 and send #2 to me for proper disposal.

I sometimes carry my 1950 Soldier.
84mm Golfer and Climber too.
Ribbed Cadet.
Uhm...
Might forget one here.

I don't EDC these but I do carry and use them.
OC Red Farmer
Red Ribbed Cadet
84mm Salesman
Wenger SI
Wenger Pocket Tool Chest
-
Other than the Swiss shArK there are some other I carry and use regularly: the red OC First Mate and the green (OD) SwissBianco Carver. And of course the MTo Pioneer X!
But the one rare SAK that I truly EDC is the green (OD) alox Vagabond!

As you can see in the pics I added to the previous post: the green unfortunately doesn’t look as new as yours anymore :)
-
I have no idea what's rare and what's not :dunno: Here's some that I carry that might be...
Wenger brushed stainless Traveler
Wenger brushed stainless Pocket Tool Chest
SwissBuck Sidekick
Original Outdoorsman
Climber Small
Salesman
Voyager Lite
I also have a factory made buffalo horn Huntsman, and a 1996 British Olympic team Spartan. I have offered them up for sale in the past, but they didn't sell at the price I thought they were worth, so I'm planning on making those two users too.
-
Necromancer! :ahhh
Ha, it took me a minute to realize how old the topic was. I saw my name as author and thought, "I didn't post that "
Then I realized I did, it's just been awhile

I carry this one often.

I don't know what jaydar's cabinet is. Anytime I see a wooden cabinet like that, I'm reminded of Gerstner tool boxes. If you're in the US, those may be worth looking into as an alternative.
-
I have a few unique (in the true meaning of the word ie 1 of 1) prototype MTs, and quite a few that are very rare indeed (only single digit numbers known in the MTo realm), but I wouldn't EDC any of them.
It's not just because of their rarity and fear of losing them (although that is a serious concern with any rare object). Some are simply unfinished/incomplete, others aren't very usable as development hadn't been finished when they were made (that is the nature of prototypes and proof-of-concept objects).
-
Vic Voyageur was my EDC for about 5 years before starting a new job where blades are a big No-no so I had to swap it out for a Jetsetter on weekdays.
Weekend carry is a rotation between the Pioneer X (heavy use days), Compact (normal use days) and the Voyageur for special occasions/dressed up carry.

I carry from time to time a Swissbianco microfarmer silver alox and a first release black farmer, standard models that I carry are economy lumberjack, GAK 2, VW Spartan. So some rare and some just hard to find.
-
I EDC a discontinued, although nothing fancy or expensive, Gerber Double Take. And a custom Alice with scissors.
-
My EDC SAK is a black Electrician. It's not a rare model, but it is an uncommon colour variation. Most of the other SAKs that I carry regularly are either mods I built myself or have at least had new scales fitted. None are stock. 8)

The BuSchroder is like the Sith: Always two there are.

Or three if you count Borgs one.

That's an unofficial BuSchroder.

I find your lack of faith disturbing...
-
That's an unofficial BuSchroder.
Unofficial as in not made by mags? Cause I was thinking of making one. Now I'm not so sure.
-
What would you call one made from a first mate?
-
Rather than go through the hassle of officially licencing my one i will do what most good clone makers do and change the model name, mine will now be called the " Farmer without the openers " and subsequently withdraw this black sheep from the Buschroder club, i tend not to hang around clubs i'm not welcome in :hatsoff:
Regarding the OP, i sometimes carry this one..there is only one in existence, the Farmer without openers, although technically mine is a Pioneer with a saw and no openers i found that name to be a bit too longwinded

Not at all - Commissioned by Ron is what makes them BuSchroders. Otherwise it's a Bushcrafter. Or whatever else you want to call it. BorgCrafter, zoidBorger, whatever.

I had a Zoidborger in Nairobi once and was sick for three days.

I´m not sure that I agree.
Modding a SAK to make it look like a Bushcrafter doesn´t make it one.
And the same is true for Voyageurs and other rare SAKs.
And of course Borg is welcome to the BuSchroder club.

That is an interesting idea, what exactly doesn't make it a XXX model?

I had to google that one, i'm not surprised :D
-
That is an interesting idea, what exactly doesn't make it a XXX model?
I don't think a mod should be named after a Vx model if only to prevent confusion when selling.
-
Not EDC, but sees a good bit of trail time. It's my Master Craftsman!
-
I don't think a mod should be named after a Vx model if only to prevent confusion when selling.
Understood.
I wonder if anyone has made a list of +B models?

How’s this for rare?

Sometimes I carry a Wenger Evo 565...
The LM Sideclip is always in my pocket...

Maybe it has to be peened? :D
-
I carry a Camo Hunter on weekends. They only made them for one year so it's a hard SAK to find.
-
:dd:
-
Maybe it has to be peened? :D
Well yeah, but I also want to add it to the one behind it! So I got to take the scales off, drill out the four rods and then find longer rods to put it back together, now that cut up nail you see holding it together? That is brass and a dead on right size, only thing is I only had that one and I didn’t think before cutting it, plus it wouldn’t have been long enough for all four.. so slowly but surly..
JR
-
Not necessarily rare, but I do have a yeoman in my pocket daily.
