Day 30:

I switched to my green Explorer today.

Day 3

MP800, today's carry, opened a very belated birthday gift for my wife.

I feel like the 800 (and I guess the 700, though I don't have one at the moment) are a really interesting first attempt at a line that could've been great if they'd gotten to a version 3 or 4.

It is, I believe, the first tool to combine all outside opening tools w/ OHO by several years, which I especially appreciate on the sometimes awkward to deploy on other MTs scissors. OTOH, the toolset is a bit weird. No can opener on the 800, and tweezers!? on the 700. The 800 is a big tool, especially with a relatively modest number of implements, while the 700 is undersized. Neither one is undersized, but there's a reason that most companies have more or less coalesced around 4" as their "medium" size. A 750 that sort of squished the best of both together and split the difference could've been a real contender, I think.

You're probably not in the Philly area, then?
No.  I’m in the north central part of the state, a solid three-hour drive from Philly.

And would you be showing off a big automatic now that the ban has been lifted?
Probably not, since I don’t own one.

I’m always pleased to see knife restrictions fall, and I think anyone who wants an auto should get one and carry it.

Personally though, I haven’t felt the overwhelming urge to acquire one.

For one thing, a good quality auto is quite expensive vs. a comparable quality manual folder.

For another, I’m pretty quick with my flippers and wrist flicks, and I’m not sure how much speed (if any) I would really gain with an auto.

Finally, I would have some concerns (perhaps legitimate, perhaps not) about it accidentally opening in my pocket.  And if it had additional safeties or other complications to make this scenario less likely, they would slow down deployment, which would sort of defeat the main purpose of having an auto in the first place.

Why do you have so much rust issues? I would think Canada would be similar to Norway in many ways. (Seasons, weather, roads).

On the one hand, I'm broadly unenthused with intentionally limited collectors editions of any kind. I'd prefer pieces be available to whoever wants them.

On the other, I recognize that collectability is probably the only reason Case is still in business after all the other big east coast cutlery companies went under, and I appreciate that they mostly do cosmetic collectables, and keep most of the patterns pretty widely available.

It's not ideal, but I think it's probably about the best balance we're likely to get from a company in the current market.

Hey Otonka, is there any way you could take a photo of what the Swiss Champ looks like in its slip?
Of course. Sorry for the late response. I like the slips larger than the SAK.
