Title: Tripod and chain cooking?
Post by: Sparky415 on October 02, 2016, 05:39:45 PM

Anyone use one for cooking?
I’ve kinda made one and want to know what to do with it now?
Just hang a kettle on it or more?
Pictures Please?

Yup, put it over the coals and be ready to keep adding wood to the pile cooking something in the kettle usually needs a lot of fuel. Also the chain has to be adjustable so you can raise or lower the kettle when needed. A small simple carabiner will do the trick.

It will work well over your firepit, I've got one but I left part of it at home on the last meet. Works well with a kettle, dutch oven and I'm going to lash up some kind of bbq grill for mine.  :salute:

I haven't tried it in years, not since I was in the Scouts.  I'm interested in seeing your set-ups though. :tu:

This is what I’ve got so far, tripod, dog chain and a couple of hooks (cooker just for example)

I have many years of experience at this sort of cooking during historical reenacting.  The one thing I can tell you is never ever hang an empty pot over the fire.  It always needs to have some oil, water, milk, or broth in the pot, depending on what you're cooking.  Then, when you're done cooking you can clean your pot with soap and water, but after drying you need to put a little oil in the pot and re-hang it over the fire to warm it and spread the oil over the inside of the warmed pot.  This will keep your cast iron pot from rusting.
