Title: One week with the Wave Plus
Post by: Pacu on August 04, 2018, 07:07:15 PM
Not real good with reviews but I'll either get better at it or not  >:D

Here is my review of the Wave Plus or Wave+ .

Here you have it out of blister pack which itself is sharper and more deadly to open than it should be. Guess multitool theft is a major thing.  ::)  Tool and nylon sheath.
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1834/28858592967_084a0b1b3d_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/KY8QgH)20180801_204826 (https://flic.kr/p/KY8QgH)

The nylon sheath has a pretty solid snap and is better quality than those pleather sheaths from the Blasts or Fuses . This sheath would great with a Rebar but I went with a Charge sheath to carry my Wave plus in .

Another pic of the provided sheath

The tool itself. Fit and finish is top shelf. All tools open nicely, no rubbing. Tool is still a little tight opening but after a year of use you'll wish you had it back that way.

All the inside tools.  Scissors, a tiny screwdriver that is phillips and flathead held in tight,  flathead, can opener.  All open easily with thumbnail. QC is A+ here.

Outside opening blades. This is why the Wave is so popular. One handed opening. This feature trumps any other multi on the market as it is so invaluable working in tight spaces,  Blade is 420HC so it sharpens easily. Serrated one too.

Close up of the hard wire cutters. They cut hard wire, coaxial, cat5e with pretty nice. I snipped a coat hanger just before doing this review. Here's the rub. I cut a lot of zip ties and these cut so so . Also braided cable you have to cut up at the front of the wire cutters, not all the way back or the cable with fray.
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1837/42941224095_a39dab0e34_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28qyZSF)20180804_102642 (https://flic.kr/p/28qyZSF)

File is a combo or rough and diamond. Always liked the Wave files so why mess with a good thing.

I give this tool two thumbs up. I carry a bit kit which I highly recommend. I also recommend a Charge sheath but let me show you why .....You can belt carry it horizontal, vertical. Leather is hard use premium and if you are constanyly using your tool you can use the hole in the bottom of the sheath to carry/hold the Wave while your hands are busy and you can easily reach for it without unsnapping every use. I use this feature daily.

In short, I'd say your hard earned money would not be wasted on this fine tool. I just got done using the hell out of it every few minutes outfiting an auditorium so big you could fly a Harrier jet about in it. Used the Wave on multiple tasks and it performed as expected.
Thanks Leatherman for another fine tool and thank you MTO members if you made it thru my mediocre review.  :D :D :salute: :salute:

I find myself wanting a Surge again , had a few in the past but gave them away to friends.  I don't know though.... my belt of 10 years finally broke last week. Guy I'm too hefty or the tool was. I'm blaming that weighty Wave .  ::) ::) ::) :D

Nice review.  I like that leather sheath.  I've given up on LM nylon sheaths a while ago.  I cannot get away from OHO MT any time soon.  For work its a must not a convenience.

those Charge sheathes are top notch  :tu: but I like the new ones too, they seem sturdy enough  :)

Also, excellent pics, a joy to the eyes with that High Definition  :like:

Thank you for the review, Pacu! Think I'll throw the Wave+ on the "to-get list".
I have Waves, but I would like to personally see how the replaceable wire cutters work on the Wave+.and that nylon sheath looks awesome. Also, I will need one with "+" on the handles for the collection. :like:

The Surge is incredibly light....If you take into account the strength, size and functionality.  But, you're right, it'll make a belt sag a bit over time. :ahhh

Yea, all the other features are the same as the last gen Wave except plier head.  Guess they are gonna have replaceable wire cutters plier heads on most of their tools.

Pacu, what about the plier head on the handle channel?  That rubbing, which scratches up the head, drives me crazy given the price of the tool and attention to detail elsewhere.

Since I have three Waves in stainless(2 new and 1 OG), I opted for the BO Wave+. Figured I'd get it in black before they raised the price $10 for BO on the Wave.
It is ordered. :woohoo:

My BO Wave+ came in today! The tool has no QC issues at all. It seems LM has stepped up their QC game on the Wave+. :woohoo:

I am a bit jealous, as the BO came with the "Molle" sheath. The same rotten sheath I have several of. Really wanted the new nylon. Oh well. The tool kicks smurf!
I'll post pics after dinner.

I said it first  :pok:

And the Wave + itself, well ...  ::)

I must say that his one looks like a Leatherman from 15 years ago.  Not one thing wrong with it (okay, there was one thing, one of the screws from the replaceable wire cutters wasn't screwed in deep enough, and it touched the handles when closing the tool, but this was fixed in two seconds and with two twists of the wrist  ;)).

But the rest of the tool feels just perfect, nothing rubbing, nothing too loose or too tight, handles perfectly aligned (the tool lies perfectly flat on the table, not like most Spirits  :pok:). And every part of the tool, inside and outside feels just perfect.  This Wave + is possibly the Leatherman with the best fit and finish since, dare I say ... My original Supertool  :D.

Okay, my Charges (date codes 0808), my previous Wave (date code 0111) and the two 25th Anniversary Waves (date codes 0408) I recently bought also had great fit and finish, maybe the Wave/Charge platform is just Leatherman's A-game.  I must say, all of my previous Wave/Charge tools had the pliers rubbing against the handles while closing the tool, scratching up the plier head along the way, the new Wave + (at least the one I own  :P) does not seem to have this "problem".  This is not a big thing, since it's a tool and pliers are bound to get scratched up during use, but still, I hope this means that Leatherman have stepped up their game, and that their QC issues have been dealt with ...  If not, I guess I should just be happy that I was one of the lucky ones this time ...   ;)

P.S.: I also bought it because this one doens't have the "+" on the handles (yet ?).  If the next batch comes out and those have Wave + on the handles, I will be very happy that I got one of the first batch (collectors ...  ::)).

 ;)

This week my wife ( finally ) got back surgery for her disc in her back. While she was drugged up in the bed I fixed the hospital door that wouldn't stay closed, opened her icepack, used the pliers to fix the blood pressure cuff that came undone. Wave + came in real handy up there.  :multi:

Glad to see my review has prompted others to this winner of a tool. That black oxide is cool looking.  8) 8)

Well, I mean, it's still a Wave. Of course it's good. Why are people surprised with how good the + is?
Title: Re: One week with the Wave Plus
Post by: gerleatherberman on August 10, 2018, 05:26:16 AM
Because LM has been selling some tools that have minor QC issues for a few years now. Not detrimental issues of QC, but nagging issues nonetheless.
It seems the Wave+ is consistently produced to the level LM used to be known for. I hope it stays that way.

My 2014 Wave has PE blade and file rub, as well as one handle snaps into place more firmly than the other. Those issues don't make it a bad tool in any sense of the word, but I was thrilled to see my Wave+(and apparently other member's + Waves) had absolutely no nagging issues. Everything feels and behaves as it should. :)

I hope that helps clarify the perception of surprise at the Wave+. Was it worth buying a new one for the replaceable cutters? Not really, but it was a nice excuse to buy another Wave..

Great review, Pacu :tu:. Seems like the general consensus is that the Wave + has some great QC.

A little while back, I sent in my original Wave for warranty and got a new one. The tool is magnificent, but the QC seemed lacking. The file rubs, the pivots tighten when rotated, and the plier pivot seems offset or something, making them stiffer.

The replaceable wire cutters seem nice. I’m a little gun-shy with using my wire cutters because I damaged the ones on my old Wave.

A heads up:

Wspeed, Nix(from what little I know) and I are planning to do a Wave challenge starting September 1st. The mods requested the challenge be started, by all involved, on the first. Not before or after the first. Being the Wave, it should prove to be a wildly good challenge. The badge requests would need to be done in bulk.
They are going to be working on a Wave only badge for OG Wave, New Wave, and Wave+.

The Wave Challenge looks like it's building into a Hoss of a thread.  :tu: :tu:

After a couple of weeks using the Wave + i did notice a difference in plier closure. The older Waves ( Charges too ) close better than the Wave +.  You could remove a splinter easily with the older Wave models, not so much with the Wave +.

See pics below.

LM switched from fine teeth to coarse teeth a few years ago. Did it to the 300 and Surge too. :tu:

It isn't a Wave+ only thing.  :)

Its because that's the new plier design.

The Wave in the pic is stamped 03-23-18

Who knows  :dunno:

And the front portion is flush / flat

It might just work better for more applications

it grabs at the very tip well but I can slide a sheet of paper between the main teeth easily

might be because bigger, thicker teeth don't get as worn out and damaged over years of grabbing, twisting and holding stuff?

:iagree:

My Vic Spirit S has got damaged teeth at the front caused by the previous owner. These are very fine too and therefore less durable.

And face it, how many times do you use pliers for that ultra fine pulling work? You'd need tweezers for that :pok:

I don't think this is a bad move from LM... at all!
And that coming from a Vic fan... ;)

I couldn't agree more!

I buy a lot of "lightly used" MTs and the biggest issue I have is the plier teeth, as those are arduous at best to repair. Fine teeth take hours and hours of using a mini-file to reshape. The newer coarse teeth, while also much harder to damage, take just a half hour or so with a mini-triangular file . :)

Only down side to coarse plier teeth is tool marks if you slip thr grip on something :ahhh

Yeah, easier to get tool marks, or teeth marks, with a bit of slippage, but in general I prefer an aggressive tooth. If I need to be more gentle, I'll wrap a bit of duct tape around the teeth to protect the material I'm working with.

But then if you don’t want teeth marks
You shouldn’t use pliers
Only the correct tool for the job  :pok:

I find myself wanting a Surge again , had a few in the past but gave them away to friends.  I don't know though.... my belt of 10 years finally broke last week. Guy I'm too hefty or the tool was. I'm blaming that weighty Wave .  ::) ::) ::) :D
Yeah. I'm blaming the MT weight for my belt issue too! :like:

Just think how quickly your belt would
of broken with the Surge hanging of it
The Surge is incredibly light....If you take into account the strength, size and functionality.  But, you're right, it'll make a belt sag a bit over time. :ahhh
You need one, W!  :pok: :D

Nice walk-through, Pacu.

I tried carrying my OG Surge on my belt while I was working on the Jeep and a Honda the other day. Honestly the weight was something to contend with especially since I've been hip-carrying a Rebar for a year. But more importantly,  that silly, narrow belt loop they use on the Premium Nylon sheath is really insufficient. The tool is so heavy that it warps the belt loop out of shape in a day. And then it sits that much farther from your belt and catches on everything.

Now I keep it in my day pack (which goes to work with me every day) or in the Jeep.

Surge is a great tool. But I recently got a Wave. Didn't think I would like it, but after handling it I really do see the draw.

The Surge is actually quite light once you take everything off the ends of the handles.
