Title: Adventure Sunday- October 19, 2014
Post by: Grant Lamontagne on October 20, 2014, 03:14:00 AM
As part of the plan to kick the site up another notch, Megan and I have been starting a Sunday Adventure.  While we may not have been out every Sunday, we have gotten out on more adventures than not.  Today's was kayaking, and here are some photos.

Megan Representing:

Def Representing:

I'm not really advertising for CJS Knives, I just happened to pull out their shirt when I was getting dressed this morning.  :D

Otherwise it was the usual gear- Megan carrying the CRKT Neckolas knife and me with the Boker Canoe Kayak knife designed by my good buddy Abe Elias.

We paddled a section of the Shubie Canal I call the Four Lakes Run because it covers four different lakes- William, Thomas, Fletcher and Grand Lake, all connected by a canal system.  It should be fairly well known to members here now as I have posted photos of this section of the canal hundreds of times before.  :D

(http://gallery.multitool.org/pbmirror/Personal/Kayaking/Four%20Lakes%20Run/October%2019%202014/20141019_090954_zpsae311cf3.jpg) (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/Multitooldotorg/media/Personal/Kayaking/Four%20Lakes%20Run/October%2019%202014/20141019_090954_zpsae311cf3.jpg.html)

As you can see, the weather was sort of touch and go for much of the day- at times it looked like we were paddling into Mordor like in the above photo, and other times it was sunny and beautiful.

(http://gallery.multitool.org/pbmirror/Personal/Kayaking/Four%20Lakes%20Run/October%2019%202014/20141019_094945_zpsc00777c6.jpg) (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/Multitooldotorg/media/Personal/Kayaking/Four%20Lakes%20Run/October%2019%202014/20141019_094945_zpsc00777c6.jpg.html)

The fall colors were spectacular, but unfortunately many of the trees were stripped bare by the near miss of Hurricane Gonzalo that passed near here a couple of days ago. You can still see a bunch of colors that almost perfectly match the color of Megan's boat.

(http://gallery.multitool.org/pbmirror/Personal/Kayaking/Four%20Lakes%20Run/October%2019%202014/20141019_105541_zpsf6865ba0.jpg) (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/Multitooldotorg/media/Personal/Kayaking/Four%20Lakes%20Run/October%2019%202014/20141019_105541_zpsf6865ba0.jpg.html)

It wasn't all smooth sailing- here are some rapids that Megan just came down- not all the way down mind you, but the two "steps" you see immediately behind her.  Those of you that recall my posts last year here and on FB regarding access to the canal and some contested land will be interested to know that the access issue has been settled and that the land on the left side of the above pic is the spot that was contested.

(http://gallery.multitool.org/pbmirror/Personal/Kayaking/Four%20Lakes%20Run/October%2019%202014/20141019_123946_zpsc0c662e3.jpg) (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/Multitooldotorg/media/Personal/Kayaking/Four%20Lakes%20Run/October%2019%202014/20141019_123946_zpsc0c662e3.jpg.html)

Megan is always surprised by how many dragon flies flock to me in the woods.  I think they are attracted by all the mosquitoes that seem to be attracted to me.  It's kind of neat when I'm paddling as I have all these dragonflies buzzing around me- I sort of feel like an aircraft carrier as they fly along beside me, occasionally landing for a rest on the deck of my boat.  This one however felt my hat was a better place to rest!

(http://gallery.multitool.org/pbmirror/Personal/Kayaking/Four%20Lakes%20Run/October%2019%202014/20141019_104535_zps111d94db.jpg) (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/Multitooldotorg/media/Personal/Kayaking/Four%20Lakes%20Run/October%2019%202014/20141019_104535_zps111d94db.jpg.html)

This was a photo I took both for Abe, the designer and also for Grathr, because we discussed this knife in THIS THREAD (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,52909.0.html) a little while ago.

(http://gallery.multitool.org/pbmirror/Personal/Kayaking/Four%20Lakes%20Run/October%2019%202014/20141019_121450_zps3879b2a6.jpg) (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/Multitooldotorg/media/Personal/Kayaking/Four%20Lakes%20Run/October%2019%202014/20141019_121450_zps3879b2a6.jpg.html)

This is where we ended up- near Lock 5 on Grand Lake, although I don't really expect anyone but Derek to have any idea where the heck that is.  :D

All in all it was a great day- the rapids were a little rough in spots which resulted in me having to get out and get pretty wet, but that's all part of the fun.

Great pics!!  Even driving on the #2 is beautiful right now!!

Yep, I spent many a day there when I was in Junior and High School.  A good buddy of mine lived on Grand Lake Drive, and another on Kings Road.  Did a good amount of fishing near the train bridge there too.  It's too bad that they tore the building down that was there.

If you do any off-roading, and want a bum/photographer to tag along, just shoot me a message.

Took my boys hiking today. Stopped to teach them about moss growing on the one side of the tree. Hiked the Uinta Mountains. (Utah)

That's a nice fall trip. It's cool how def creates his own ecosystem of insects. Soon he will be their god

Funny you should say that. I had to smite one in the Jeep on the way out yesterday morning but it must have bitten me first.

I backhanded it against the window and it exploded- I'm thinking if there had been anyone driving next to me they'd have thought they witnessed someone being murdered!

That was a hell of a thing to clean up.

On a serious note,  dragonflies are really important here right now to help control our mosquitos since our bats have almost all been killed off by white nose syndrome.

Great hat Megan :tu:

So, we could put you, mosquitos and dragon flies into a bottle to create a bottle ecosystem. How do you like your dragon flies? With ketchup?

Once we were hiking in New Zealand and tiny birds were following us, flying around us. We then realized that we roused insects that were well hidden in the soft ground.

Anyway, great trip :salute:

Here is a photo from last weekend. The Fall colours were much brighter. We had a bit of a storm last week which removed most of the leaves from the trees.

Let me know if the old photos are good enough. Otherwise I can take some new ones. Same knife!

We were lucky this weekend to have such warm weather. It's freezing today. I'm not sure we'll be paddling much longer.
