Title: Complaints from your significant other about multi-tool collections.
Post by: Philthy on October 22, 2013, 06:28:35 AM
Does your significant other complain that you have to many multi-tools?

My wife doesn't really complain but she gives me a look whenever she sees me with a new multi-tool...  One of these days I think she's going to say something.

I got the look after the 3rd one appeared I think. See my wife got me a new LM ST300 to replace my ageing Wave. I got the Wave replaced under warranty. Somewhere between then and purchasing a SAK 2012 Soldier, I think I got the look.

O Yeah but I can't blame her.

I have issues  :climber:  :multi: :spyder:

My husband sighs and rolls his eyes. Then reaches frequently for the Micra I got him, or the Mini Suspension P sitting in the stand beside his comfy chair. Then >I< look at HIM, with that knowing 'yeah, STFU about my multitool fascination'.

He does believe I have a 'problem', I think. :D

But let's be honest. An interest in small multitools is WAY down the list of issues I have, so...  :D

As long as you keep buying Wenger models that is 100% true.

Some of the prices have doubled.

oh you mean 'THE' look  ::)
I get it all the time, from the wife AND Daughters  but they all know who to ask for a pair of scissors or a knife when they want to take tags off shoes or clothes from their many shopping trips.

I know that look all too well, the only difference is my look is usually followed by words also, ie ... WHY DO YOU NEED SO MANY KNIVES ? My answer is BECAUSE THEY MAKE ME HAPPY :)

My wife will generally buy me a new SAK, MT or light if it's within our monthly budget. This month she bought me a new light. She doesn't care what I collect so long as it doesn't become a "storage" problem, as we have limited space in our house. But that's nowhere near an issue ATM.

Next time answer:

My GF doesn't complain, thanks to MT.O she got already twice pumpkin soup (which I hate and she loves and me being the household cook).

My Wife has not been as bad when I unveiled the last few tools as she was when "the disease" first took hold. For example: when I brought the Skeletool home, she grilled me (a little, not bad) and gave me a few eye rolls. Since then, I got the Octane and Style CS and she didn't seem to mind, and was infact impressed that I scored sweet deals on them.

My wife seems totally fine with my buying habits.  I do like to think I am reasonably sensible though, I don't spend much and never money I don't have to spare.

I get alot of packages, so I think she'd have a hard time knowing what is mine, a donor part, or a customer knife. :D  I bought alot more in the early days, now I just buy if there is something cool I dont have.  Lately its been the 111mm sizes as I havent got many of them before.  Ive been buying workchamps, and OH trekkers with the idea to marry the parts eventually.

Oh also funny story.  My wife is what started my habit.  I like to remind her of that.  She bought me a gift card for bass pro shops 3 yrs ago and I bought a knife there.  That got me re-interested in knives, which led to MTs and SAKs.  So I remind her that if she didnt give me that give card I wouldnt have the pile of SAKs and MTs I do now! :D

I don't get much for complaints from my wife. She's pretty handy so she'll grab whatever multi is close and do what she needs to do. The only time it becomes an issue is when she tries to do something the tool isn't meant for, like using the blade on a PST to pry open a paint can. The it's me complaining.

That is a good point, and one worth noting. I think my Wife is a MT believer. She regularly asks for my tools (the metal one) for doing this and thats. She also has an MP400 prepositioned in her van, and even wants a more full featured tool for her purse - she has  dime but says she wishes she had something more sometimes.

Hmmm, maybe she has caught the infection? I didn't think it was contagious. I wonder what the methods of transmission are?

My wife will say something good naturedly, but never critically.  That said, she has an impressive collection of prybars/pry tools and hammers, so we have detente.  :D

single myself so no one is complaining thankfully, my youngest often looks at me funny when I show her a new acquisition but she thinks "their cool".  I did have a friend as why so many till I gave her a style cs and wenger for her keys now mildly converted she gets it.  my roomie however is always stoked when I score something and has helped me find some great tools.

No complaints here. My wife has learned over the years that my "utility belt" (what she calls my Wave) is pretty dang handy and has earned a place in our marriage. She likes fixed things, and knows I'm a multi-nut and tinkerer for life.

But we aren't without rules; when she comes in for a snuggle on the couch, I know I got T-minus 2 seconds to shift the sheath along my belt as to avoid her getting a face-full of Leatherman, and me getting an earful about my "utility belt"!

The wife is  :assimilate:   3 is a collection? Owner of the MiniTool,Style PS and now the Skeletool. Besides her collections of stuff far exceeds whatever I horde.

My wife initially would give me the look and ask if I really need another one, but she's backed off lately.  She was impressed when I chose to sell some of them a few months back, but I've since bought more and she's asked why I got rid of some of them just to get more.  But for the most part she doesn't care much anymore because she knows I like them, just like she has things she likes.  Also, she won't want to admit it, but she asks regularly if I have scissors or a knife, so they've proven their worth more than once :tu:

She used to, but I think she's pretty much given up at this point.

I am in the same boat, right now she is half jokingly talk about me receiving 'little gifts' every now and then, and I am careful about never opening the locked drawers of tools whenever she is around, but someday...

I do find it funny that I put this display system up in the basement

and the "spousal unit" (she hates that phrase) walks buy it 20 times a week, yet has not noticed the stuff inside.  I think the one here and one there approach has blinded her to the change.

basically like you do not notice your kids getting taller, but people who have not seen them in 6 months see the difference immediatly

My wife will give me the look sometimes, but she doesn't complain. She knows I love knives and MTs. When I sent her this pic of what I bought today she said "cool, I like the top left and bottom right"

My wife doesn't complain about me hoardind some users, she knows they are useful. She does poke fun at me for being reluctant to use my Vic Spirit or my only shelf queen, a Swisstool, though.

I get reprimanded quite often, especially since I always end up with cuts from all that balisong flipping but aside from that, I get to collect as many multis, knives and gear that our finances will permit

I am a complete gear head. My wife know that, and she likes it. She knows I don't just trow money on the next next new thing, and that I prefer gear that works and fits my taste. I apply the same philosophy for things I buy for her, and she loves it.

She has more than a few multi tools herself.  Thats why we are a good couple.  In addition the profit I make from sales makes my collection have no effect on our budget.
