You can use this speedometer to check  http://www.testmyspeed.com/ (http://www.testmyspeed.com/) it’s always nice to check that you are getting the bandwidth that your ISP have promised you

My "high speed DSL" is about 0.5 MB, thou most of the time it's 0.2 MB or much less depends on which application I'm using.  ::)

That's not too bad for ADSL Paul, quicker than mine anyway, I'm getting about 4736 Kbps at the moment, although my uplink is quicker at 896 Kbps.

Here in the UK, it depends on things like how far you are from the nearest exchange and whether that exchange has the latest kit in it. They are in the middle of a huge program to upgrade them all though, so we should all see better speeds soon.

speedtest.net gives me 12 mbps.

Apparently a 800mb movie will take me 8 mins.

That's a bit like saying my car can travel to Melbourne in 3 hours. this is probably true, if my point of origin is the ISS when it is above St Kilda.

In practice, It takes me a crapload longer than that.

also keep in mind downloading & torrents can affect the test.

for cleanest results try it with as little as possible running.

I sometimes post my results on one of my sites: http://www.themetal.net/taxonomy/term/3 altho it's typically when my connection is bad, as you can see, I've had better overall in the past, so they've actually downgraded our connection. They told us it was to make our connection more stable, which is a lie, because it's equally bad as it was, and slower.

100M shortly! Then we'll be having some fun.

That's my speed at home.

At the moment I am in northern Michigan @ the summer place using wireless tether on my Android with an ad-hoc wireless connection to a DD-WRT flashed Linksys with two additional access points. One on the beach and one up by the garage.

It's not the speed I'm used to at home but at least it's full 3G on Verizon with 'Net access for the whole family. (And I'm in the middle of nowhere!)  It's actually pretty neat the way I have it set up. If I wasn't leaving for home today I'd make a short video.

Exactly!

Phooey on HTTP for accurately measuring transfer speeds. Only good for an estimate.

I actually get about 70-80Mb/s via FTP when downloading HUGE RAR's and Speedtest gives me this BS..

No idea.  I don't think there are different offerings with the speed here.  I do know the main box is across the road, and if there are different speeds available, we likely would have gotten the top one since my wife works for the phone company and we get a discount.

(http://www.speedtest.net/result/1912853124.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)

Just reset my modem this morning and got better speeds.  Since our modem is required for TV and internet I have been putting off resetting it since every time I think of it my wife is watching TV.

I'll post an update again in a couple of days when I have fiber and we'll see if there's a difference.

VERY Nice!!! Welcome to where the big boys play!  ;)

How's the reliability? Cable or fiber?

<grin>

It's not reliable at all. I've had problems for almost 2 years know, though not all the time. It got worse after the upgrade from 40/4 to 50/5 a month ago... It really sucks since it's a combined internet/tv/telephone package; at times none of those services work at all :(

I've called their customer support line more times than I have called my mom this year :D

Little bit of a difference now:

I've very jealous... Australia is a backwater when it comes to Internet speeds - and our opposition still want to scrap plans for a national fibre network (but that's a political discussion that I suppose I should refrain from)

I was happy the other day when my typically 7Mbps ADSL connection was squeezed up to 10Mbps by using a SNR target hack in my modem...

Oh yeah! Much better for sure.

Don't forget that if you have a 10/100 connection on the WAN port of your router you get something with gigabit.  Unless of course your router/modem/VOIP hardware is an "all in one" device, in which case telco probably has ya covered.

upstream makes all the difference... even if you don't have so much downstream... I remember when we went from 0.5Mb/s upstream to 1Mb/s... it was a huge difference for sending emails and uploading photos... even though our downstream didn't change. It also seemed to make downloads a bit faster as your computer can "ask" for the next piece of a file quicker...

We just switched to FibreOP, and here's the results.  This computer is pretty far from the wireless modem, so I imagine that we're losing some speed as a result.  The speeds are suppose to be 50 down and 30 up.  We get that closer to that when near the wireless modem.

I think it is a common consensus, but I have recently just upgraded to fiber optics connection(from a 20/20 plan) and the difference is beyond my widest dream.

Netvigator is a major local broadband provider, but to be honest, I think their service varies.  Sometimes they could be so unstable that a 20/20 plan will often yield single low digit both ways, or they may even randomly cut you off the grid(without warning or apologizes afterwards).

Strange to see some upstreams higher than downstream... typically most connections have ~10x upstream as downstream... ie 8Mb/s 0.5Mb/s.... etc most people do not need much more than 1-2Mb/s upstream as they are only uploading the occasional video or large email attachment and most of their traffic is incoming, not outgoing. I am tempted to drop down a tier from 100/10 to 50/5... but I'm definitely happy with my connection otherwise.

With the upgrade to 50, you will also see a increase in upload to 3.

You may want to log into your account on the virgin website. It should give you a rough indication when the upgrade will take place. A mate of mine received his about 6 weeks ago.

I'm still on my "100/10"

Been contemplating for some time dropping to 50/5 to save a few euros a month... maybe use the savings for netflix which is finally launching in Spain next month (I hope this time for sure).
Title: Re: Connection speed
Post by: dks on September 22, 2015, 12:28:25 PM
Most providers limit the upload speeds here...  so you get up/down  50/5   or 20/2 and so on..
I assume that if you play games or upload a lot of videos this may be an issue, but most of the public mainly downloads stuff.

the difference between the 50/5 and 20/2 packages (with the same TV channels) was about 7Euro per month for me, so I went for the faster internet.

Now, what they DO NOT TELL YOU is that most of the mobile devices, especially the older ones, have lower wifi bandwidth limits..

So, my netbook can only download at 20M  and my phone at 30M, through wifi...

to get 50M I need to connect a wire to the router...  :D

Since yesterday I, and because of this thread, I "upgraded" from 10 mb/s service to 20 mb/s, and am now getting 24 download and 2 upload.  That's adequate, but still slow compared to some of you cats who are getting 75.  I could go up to 50 download, for another $20 per month, but you gotta draw the line somewhere.

You might not get any practical benefit from investing in more. Regular web surfing won't benefit from more speed, and Netflix says that 25 Mb/s is good for their Ultra HD quality: https://help.netflix.com/en/node/306.

This is what I am paying for:

Up to 50 Mbps Down / 10 Mbps Up

Which is not even 10Mbps over the next step down of 25Mbps down and 10 up.  I could save almost $15/month by dropping my speed down, but I'm not sure if the speed would also drop to 60% of what I am paying for...

Usually, phone Internet providers are capped pretty low on the amount of data, so there is that.  Even T-Mobile, which has claimed to be unlimited here in the US, slows down your data access to abysmal speeds after 30GB(I think), whereas my Comcast limit is 1TB.

But yeah. You would think the home Internet speeds could hold their own.

Well, up until late 2017 I was primarily using wifi at the Powernoodle Compound for our laptops, Rokus, etc.  Getting maybe 45 mbps.  I was having constant connectivity problems with the devices.  And my teenage son likes to do 1st person shooter games online that really benefit from good interweb speed.  Then it dawned on me that I could run ethernet cables from the router to each of my devices.  That cranked my speed way up, and then I pay an extra $25/month for faster speed.  I don't need it, but I do like it.  So yeah, I do have a noodle of cables running all over the ceiling of my basement that feed the various devices.  I love it.  I do still use wifi with four security cameras, but that's the only thing I have left on wifi so there is plenty of bandwidth.

At the same time, I killed my cable tv and got DirectvNow, which saved me about $90/month.  So there was a lot of positive change.

glad you worked it out  :tu:

BTW; that Powernoodle Compound must really be a thing to see   :o, do you have your hundreds of blades, tools, bags and packs stored in nuclear proof bunkers in the basement?  :D :gimme:

PS: Nix gifted me a BM710, and I know you like it a lot and it was (is? ) one of your favorite Benchmades. Do you still have it and carry it?

Very nice

I get a nice constant 100 Mbps download but upload is rarely above 30 Mbps, my last 2 tests the upload was around 7

Not bad at all!

I don't even know what plan I have. Probably 200 down, 20 up. You have 400?

Yep, the 'biggest' one.
And sometimes it's even better.

The slower one is in the next room, one wall away.
Faster is beside the router.
I wonder if my phone or the router is the problem.

300+ downstream was great, but I rarely saw the full capacity, plus I'm happier to pay less and have better upstream!

BTW, even with my pathetic bandwidth I rarely if ever have buffering on YT, and my downloads are uncapped.

What do you guys use all the bandwidth for? Games?

web maintenance sometimes requires I upload/download large files in a hurry.

better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Not really, my service provider rule us all.

I remembered this thread from many years ago, and Enki used to tell me I stole the village's connection throughput at night... :D

25Mbps is enough for streaming 4K video, to put it in perspective.
5Mbps for standard HD video.
(Not accounting for the inevitable speed dips. :dwts: )
