Title: What should I do with this watch?
Post by: captain spaulding on May 04, 2016, 09:16:43 PM
I bought this back when I had my Cadillac and it got put away for many years. I tried to clean the (gunk?/corrosion?) off to no avail. I would love to get it clean somehow and wear it again, but i'm at a loss. Anyone on the forum have the ability to do this? If it cannot be cleaned what the heck should I do with it? Do you think the corrosion would irritate my skin from wearing it? Thanks guys and gals.  :salute:

It looks like a chrome plated plate, where the plating has corroded.
I think, you can not really do much, as the actual coating has been damaged.  Re-chrome it?

If it is SS you could use an ultrasonic cleaner and have it polished

Yea I think you are correct and I was hoping that wasn't the case.

It certainly looks like a combination of corrosion and wear. On the back of the watch the plating on the case has corroded/worn through to expose the base metal. On the side of the watch the small dot like marks are corrosion under the plating.

Unfortunately there is very little that you could realistically do to reinstate the original finish.

I personally would use a fibreglass pen and gently polish off as much as I was comfortable with and, so long as the plating is not flaking off  (which would be very sharp), I would wear and use it.

If you find a reaction between your wrist and the exposed base metal (itchiness or red marks etc) then a light application of clear nail varnish on the exposed base metal should help.

Nice looking watch.
