Title: Liner and pin metals for 91 and 93mm SAKs?
Post by: GoatDragon on September 15, 2017, 07:08:19 AM
I was looking at the liners/spacers on my SAKs and the 91mm's are obviously made of aluminum. But the 93mm alox model's spacers appear to be something else. What kind of metal is it? Also, what sort of metal are the pins on both alox and celidor models? And have the metals used changed over time?

The liners in older 93mm models are made from brass.
Newer 93mm contain liners made from nickel.
The pins of both 91 and 93mm are also made from brass.
Some collectible celidor models are made with Nickel liners too.

Well, i wouldn't call the 93mm liners (and the 91/84mm small blade spacer) "exactly" Nickel, it's more of a "Nickel alloy" maybe "Cupronickel" (same stuff some coins are made of) with a high percentage of nickel in it. Pure nickel is silver color, the liners and spacers are light yellow-ish

About the pins on the 93mm or all alox models are Nickel alloy to me (same one as the liners) not brass. Certainly not the same as the pin material on the cellidor models which is brass

Not pure nickel - the 93mm liners and pins are nickel silver, a copper/nickel/zinc alloy.
91mm liners are aluminium, the pins are brass.

You're completely right on the pins.
And the alloy...

What would be great is Vic giving us an option on the stock cellidor models (even if for limited period of time) of nickel alloy liners and pins, but not as ridiculously priced "limited or special editions"...

I would make for tougher and more durable cellidor models IMO

So if I look at my Pioneer, the tools and back springs are stainless steel, and the liners and pins are nickle alloy. The keyring attachment and the keyring itself would also be stainless steel, right? So including the aluminum scales, there are a total of only three types of metal used.

And looking at my Spartan, there are only three types of metal in it as well. Stainless steel tools and backsprings, aluminum liners/spacers and brass pins.

Did I get all that correct?

Pioneer keyring attachment is nickel silver, not stainless - but otherwise, yes.

Same as the spacer for the small blade (former spacer/keyring attachment on the old ones and 84mm models, and Compact) on all Cellidor models.
