Title: Lanyards, zipper pulls, fire starters. What if anything do you like on your SAK?
Post by: Faddy Daddy on August 09, 2017, 06:38:03 AM
I suppose I could post this thread in multiple tool threads, but I'm intending to find something for my SAK(s) and was wondering what if anything anyone else uses and why?

When I purchased a couple of new SAK's directly from Victorinox I decided to add a couple of their lanyards to my order. I was a little disappointed as their web site shows red cord with a black stopper. However, the ones I got are all black, both cord and stopper. Of course it's really not that big of a deal but it got me looking for other options.

A simple search on Amazon for knife lanyard, or pocket knife lanyard delivers all sorts of bizarre contraptions one could attach to their SAK. There are some rather large and thick looking paracord lanyards, some even have flint and striker included. (Honestly these appear a little large for a SAK - they might even dward a 91mm). There are some other nice looking ones with beaded ends, anything from hearts to skulls, some cheap some outrageously expensive (spyderco?). Then I found some regular zipper pulls which look like they'd do the trick. These are probably a bit shorter in general and I imagine use a slightly smaller diameter cord than the 500lb paracord.

Anyway, I was hoping to start a thread to see what other people are or enjoy using. I really just want something to fiddle with or make locating my SAK in my pocket a bit easier, but one that looks kind of cool wouldn't be a bad thing either.

Thoughts?

I like a lanyard to help locate it within a pocket and to add some grip on shorter SAKs.  The interesting thing is I have some SAKs without keyring and I quite like them that way.  On my 111mm SAKs they came with the SAK lanyard and pull with I also quite like.  Guess you can say I am pretty open to lanyards or none at all.

I like a leather or paracord lanyard. There are some really sweet and cheap beads on ebay - I got a Tibetan silver dragons head for £1.50 and will be ordering some more soon. With orange paracord it looks like the dragon is breathing fire!:

Besides, of all the commercially available dragon barf out there, persimmon flavor is clearly the tastiest and most popular. It's getting hard to find too, just the other day at Walmart there was only an empty shelf where the persimmon flavor would normally be, just a few cartons of radish flavor left. The prices will probably skyrocket now due to the demand exceeding the supply. Something must be done!  :ahhh

Firstly, pfrsantos is right (not often that I can say those words together) - it's my job to drag a thread down so as much as I love you bro, back the fudge off.

Secondly, this persimmons thing is really getting out of hand. Should we inform the MTo consumer protection department and inform them?

Most of my SAKs have Vic's Lanyard... One has that TEC like clip and one without the split key ring holder...

A few have paracord lanyards... nice thing about this is that paracord lanyard comes and various colors... lanyards can be fully customizable to your liking...   lots of tutorial vids on how to tie a knot...

I used to have a persimmon tree in my yard, before that I had no idea either, I never saw one at the market. The dragons would come and raid the place when they got ripe and set to vomiting in the street all night, until someone got the idea to market the stuff.

I digress, nice lanyards Gene.  :tu:

My father has a couple of trees. We wait until the ants raid them (that's when they're ripe), wash them and scoop them up with a spoon.

We watch them when they begin to ripe. When we see the ants running around near them, before getting inside, it's time to pluck them.

Down our way we like to scoop them out with a twiglet and eat them like that.

It's a young persons right of passage to defeat a persimmon vomiting Dragon using only a packet of Twiglets (24g bag only), and steal the remaining persimmons to share among the family and village. The villagers then join in the mocking of the Dragon and throw last seasons Gobblers at it until it flies away. A party is then held for the youths who passed the rite and they are awarded a garland made from the harvested persimmon flowers.

We used to do that hereabouts too, but since the spew has become such a delicacy, the lazy young people eat frozen barf lollys with twiglet handles whilst they play their dragon slaying video games. It's just not the same anymore.  :D

I add lanyards of some type to most of my users. I use leather, paracord, and/or very small Robline. Often I use one that I've pre-made that I can add/subtract for the situation.

Here are some examples that were lying close by for the picture...

Some nice ones there Gene and much more manageable than some I saw on Amazon.
I did also do some looking on ebay for lanyard beads per a suggestion on this thread and found some really cool ones.
They have solid brass, or nickel silver alloy for example
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nickel-Silver-Lanyard-Beads-for-Paracord-Leather-Cords-Shipped-From-USA/201997860800?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D45726%26meid%3D56a51eebebfb441d9e6458dddd6f9b33%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D6%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D201972133607&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

I might have to get some paracord on my own and add one of these or some fire steels like Gene did. Seems a cool little hobby and a nice way to customize your SAK.

I like a leather or paracord lanyard. There are some really sweet and cheap beads on ebay - I got a Tibetan silver dragons head for £1.50 and will be ordering some more soon. With orange paracord it looks like the dragon is breathing fire!:

That one does look cool magentus!

Persimmons are one thing, kaki is quite another, especially in Hungary.  :-\

well it seems that Kaki is the most common variety of Persimmon around.
So in my country 90% of those Persimmons are Diospyros kaki, thus the Kaki name I guess, as I've never seen another variety of that fruit in person here.

I just googled altavistaed persimmon. You are talking about dióspiros!

My father has a couple of trees. We wait until the ants raid them (that's when they're ripe), wash them and scoop them up with a spoon.

What do you scoop up?? The ants? :sa:

No, the neon yellow cord doesn't seem to get dirty.  I have tossed the lanyards in the washer and that works.

My Compact shares a dangler with a Fenix e01 and a thumbdrive- does that count?

Depending on the SAK, tiny to single AAA lights, ferro rods, or lanyards have all shown up over the years.

On several of my SAK's I've filed off the lanyard/keyring feature.

Yeah I've been seeing all sorts of possibilities. I'm thinking I might try some simple paracord lanyards.
Again, seems a nice and simple way to customize a SAK.

I've got one Climber with a lanyard, one without the key ring attachment. Go figure.

I have a Pioneer that I filed the key ring attachment point off of, even though I have an alox Soldier. I have an alox Farmer that I keep on a small carabinier so I can wear it on a neck chain for when I don't have pockets.

I think some models just feel better in the hand without that little metal bump sticking out. Others I want to have a lanyard for added security or convenience.

Thanks for sharing Aleph, I might try to do something similar except with a paracord bead. Maybe a little tiki guy, or veles God of luck or some such.

Does your lanyard ever work it's way loose from the knife? Curious if the loop through is most common or going directly through the keyring....

I use the loop through on many of my paracord lanyards and I've never had one work loose. The  advantage of the loop through is that it's easier to change onto a different knife or to change lanyard colors/braid design when so desired.

I think that way maybe looks a little better too? I bought 3 lanyards from Vic, 2 stay on nicely but one keeps wanting to work it's way loose. I really yanked on it in attempt to tighten or help it permanently form. Maybe a thicker paracord might help out there - the Victorinox lanyard isn't excessively thick.
Regardless, I'm thinking the paracord weaving might be a fun sidetrack. Now if I can only choose a color .... who knew so many, wow.

maybe not lanyards per se, but I use different attachments and grabbing methods on them

Here's a few of mine, I mostly put the glow in the dark ones with what ever color paracord will match the item, those others are just plain, but that other one is a whistle tip! Needless to say one of those go on whatever, so like out of all the zippers on a backpack, one gets a whistle, a jacket, somewhere there's a whistle! Not that I can't whistle but just the thought..

Oh yeah, that little setup on the red sak on the left, I punched a hole thingy through the leather, mounted a small clip so when the sak is in the sheath "snap"! One day I got home and found the flap open and was like ohhhh no, I ain't losing a custom sak! So this way if the flap opens and the sak falls out, it ain't going anywhere!

Nice idea MadP! I think I read about other people using long lanyards when working at height or over water to keep from loosing them as well.
Also like the belt lanyard pictured, just below the caribeaner it almost looks like one of those smaller fire steels but I think it's just a cord lock?

Looks like one can get pretty creative with lanyards for sure! I saw a few of those, lanyards with whistles, or one was even a combination fire starter and whistle. Definitely can add to the SAK's tool set.

Ok ok, chill guys..
First off here's how there made, you just fish the cord through the one piece then slip it into the little nooks, then pull the other piece over and lock it into place, same goes for the whistle tip. The amazing thing on those are the price, if you order them from the manufacturer you have to buy them each piece individually there like 30cents so only 60cents for a complete unit, yeah tax and shipping so maybe close to a whole buck for one and that's the whistle, the others like under 30cents all together! So if you order a few it's a good price, unlike buying them from other places for well over!

That other is a side release clip,it doesn't have the strike or handcuff key in the middle, but has the whistle on the sides..

Guess it would help if I put the pic in

I haven't seen an actual Victorinox landyard so I'm not sure how they compare with what I ordered. That's why I'm excited to install these and post pics for your feedback  :)

The product you linked to looks attractive! But the strings seem too thin?

As to the beads, personally I don't find them appealing as they may scratch my SAK's scales and add another hindrance to a smooth draw :)

Honestly an0nemus they don't look all that different from the zipper pulls you are looking at. I bet you have seen them in pics of other SAK's on this forum - I've seen quite a few.
Yeah, the do look thinnner but I don't think it needs to be very strong and some of that para cord, even the thinner stuff can be pretty darned strong.
I thought about that with the beads as well, no doubt they'd scratch the heck out of my scales. Not that I'm very superstitious mind you but a little good luck charm to keep from slicing my finger open might offset the scale scratching? ha ha

And a bead or thick knot seems to help keep a knife from slipping out of one's pocket so easily. (I've had a couple slip out of a pocket unnoticed. Grrrrrrr....)

Not that I'm very superstitious mind you but a little good luck charm to keep from slicing my finger open might offset the scale scratching? ha ha

yes I saw pics of the Vic lanyards thats why I ordered the zipper pulls as they do look similar :)

my wife is the superstitious kind and she does make me wear amulets, bracelets and other stuff so I think I'm already covered in that department  :D

And a bead or thick knot seems to help keep a knife from slipping out of one's pocket so easily. (I've had a couple slip out of a pocket unnoticed. Grrrrrrr....)

Nice to know Nix. That would be horrible just loosing a SAK like that.

I know some of the beads can be pretty pricey, heck you could spend more on that than the SAK itself, I saw some in the $30+ range, wow. However, a SAK can be a pretty personal thing, carrying it day after day, hopefully keeping it for years so I don't mind and in fact rather enjoy personalizing it a bit, bling I guess one could say  :D

JR

Guess it would help if I put the pic in

Yep, the price is super cheap on those. I mean for the size it's almost a why not have a whislte? (If you're going with a lanyard that is)
I'd say, i mean come on, what's better then a backpack loaded with about 6glow tips and of course 1whistle tip, especially come night time as it's sit next to your bed near a light so when you turn in for the night all you see is your bag knowing where every zipper is? Well except the whistle.. but yeah, a cool little tip for under a buck with a custom match piece of paracord to make it look even better, what's better the that? That is if you use a lanyard, lol.

MadPlumbarian, you make camping sound like Christmas, ha ha I do see where that could come in handy though.

Here are a couple hastily taken pics of my 3 Victorinox lanyards, again on the web site they show with red cordage.
Evowood 14, Compact, and Climber. The cord doesn't appear terribly thick but I imagine it's rather stout. I'd think I could almost pull the split ring apart before the cord would break. Also not sure if you can tell, but the lanyard on the evowood is the one inclined to come apart or separate from the split ring.

I put a couple of knots and a bead on my Hiker.

The lanyard cord is reflective (hard to tell in this feeble photo of mine.), and stands out really well at night:

G10 scales also keep it from slipping out of a pocket unnoticed. A 'go to' SAK for me for camping and hiking.

Nice, see each tip is the same but the cords also the same, so just need a tip and diff pieces of diff color paracord to match what it's going on..

Persimmon's build houses around where I live.....there not orange though

Amici,
Although I have been a purveyor of the 550 lanyard on a SAK in the past and still do on occasion, the majority are carried on a suspension rig I made consisting of a McGizmo # 2 and a titanium pocket clip..When utilizing this style of carry, I can EDC a Champ or Craftsman with no issues..

I like that idea sergemaster for the larger SAKs. Really I've found anything 4 layers or more is a bit awkward just lying flat in pocket.

Amici,
Here is a closer look at the suspension clip that I utilize for EDC. Some folks just go ahead and attach a P-7 clip directly onto the split ring, and that's okay. But personally, I find this style to be limited, especially during hard use situations, and when attempting to get into tight areas. .

With my example, you simply clip it to the split ring of whatever SAK you plan to EDC, and use the suspension clip on your pocket where your SAK will drop down and ride friendly with no boat anchor issues.

Then when you need it, you simply disengage the clip form the SAK's split ring, and now you can go ahead and do that voodoo you do so well..

Cheers,
Serge

That's a nice set up Serge. I like the fact how you can remove the clip from your knife so it doesn't get in the way. As long as you don't loose the clip in the midterm that is!
I've ordered one of the P7 (or similar) clips and I think I will set it up like yours for any time I wish to carry my explorer. I still like a lanyard idea for my thinner saks though.

Thanks for sharing Aleph, I might try to do something similar except with a paracord bead. Maybe a little tiki guy, or veles God of luck or some such.

Does your lanyard ever work it's way loose from the knife? Curious if the loop through is most common or going directly through the keyring....

Just like others already said, I've had not problems with the lanyard getting loose, and the fact that I can remove the lanyard and put it on another SAK
whenever I like is just a bonus

Edit: The knot is Chinese Double Button Knot if anyone is interested

My zipper pulls finally arrived yesterday. Here they are. I find them thin, though. I guess because I got used to how thick 550 paracords are.

I might try out Sarge's suggestion also.

I think with a few more practice runs I might actually have something acceptable. I will say though, boy it's a pain to try and move the bigger knots. On the end I think it's called a Turks head - hard to get it cinched up next to the other knots.

That's an awesome work for a first timer... :like:

I think that's a diamond knot at the end... Paracords also come in thinner sizes I think... If you find 550 paracord is to thick, you can also gut it (remove the 7 inner strands)... although may not look good for certain knots... I also like those snake knots, diamond knots and ranger beads...

On my EDC 111mm OH Trekker I have a short gutted paracord lanyard with a fire starter toggle on it similar to how some others on here have theirs set up.

Someday when I get the chance I'm going to come up with a easier yet compact way to have the lanyard/fire starter removable from the split ring.

The way I use it now the lanyard is used with the stopper knot to hold the fire starter to a stick for easier sparking, I've used it several times and really do like how handy those toggles are, esp for the price.

I think I'll buy a few of those toggles to play around with when I get a bit more experienced. I mean what the heck, adding some cordage and a fire starter to the edc seems like a great idea.

For most of my EDC' I just use small Zipper pulls from REI or off jackets I don't use any more. This one is off an old Mammut shell.  For bigger carries or when backpacking I will make a lanyard out of accessory cord or Paracord with some Snake, Diamond, or other decorative knots.  I used to hate the lanyard thing but I keep them short but with a big enough loop just to get a finger through. Not only that, you get that warm feeling of using something you did yourself. Lots of tutorials on youtube on how to tie different knots and make different types of lanyards.

My knives and tools used to have lanyards I did myself using paracords. I just might go back to doing them. The Vic lanyard source I contacted said it's selling for $1 a piece  :-\

Go for it!
 :pok: :pok:

Just bought 2mts for €3. It will serve to make about half a dozen lanyards/fobs, with different sizes and styles.

I also found a tool from Tandy, to make leather strings out of leather squares. It's €17, don't know if I can/will use it enough to make it worth my while to buy it.

Just saw the prices at Tandy:
Elite Club Price: $8.45
Gold Club Price: $10.40
Your Price: $12.99

Wow, what a difference!

Yup. You can get an enormous length of leather thread from a fairly small piece of scrap leather. Must really think about getting one of these.

Just to other day I removed the lanyard from 2 SAKs.  I got to thinking, I have lanyards on my Swisschamp, Explorer and Manager as far as SAKs go.  The other SAKs are to me best suited without.  I do have lanyards on a few AAA lights.  They seem to be a nice addition.  I looked back on what I originally wrote and am more comfortable without a lanyard on most SAKs.

Had a 1/4 little sockett dangle on a lanyard, remove it, insert screwdriver and you have a 1/4 driver- may scratch the knife though...
Just using SAK ones on the little ones and a P7 clip on the heavier Huntsman.

In my Really limited experience,  I found if you wet the cord  (water ) it should tighten up a bit...

I got some mini Bic lighters  :D I used to EDC a little blue one in my pocket all the time, useful for daily life and the occasional smoker who needs a light. Plus if it runs out of butane you can still take the metal flame guard off and use it to throw sparks for survivaly stuff. Plus MacGyver always carried strike anywhere matches and it was pretry cool.

Recently I've added Paratinder lanyard to my Soldier.  This stuff is great even when I soaked it in water I was able to light it with a ferro toggle after patting it dry on my shirt. This stuff with a ferro toggle adds the extra ability of a emergency fire starter to my SAK.

You probably could light regular paracord with with a good ferro rod but this stuff catches a spark like dry grass on a 100 degree day but burned slow like a candle. Even wet with it well catch a spark its just harder.

I love the idea of lanyards and pocket clips and such and threads like this always get me keened up to make or buy them. :salute: I once had one on a Swisschamp that attached to a belt loop.

Then I remember how much they can get in the way when I'm using tools at the keyring end, i.e. they're something that needs to be held flat along the length of the knife, if not removed entirely. I got tired of the one on my SC and the knife became bag carry only.

I even have half a mind to remove the keyrings on my most used SAKs. I have a couple without keyrings (in 91mm and 93mm) and the improvement in comfort is remarkable compared to those with them. But you can't put them back on, just in case - and much of a SAK is about "just in case"! :-\ I actually tried folding the one on my SC into the body and was disappointed that it didn't.

One of my SAK’s has a Ti Dangler clip , the rest just have a pinky lanyard to prevent dropping , it gets you negative points , when working at heights .

One of my SAK’s has a Ti Dangler clip , the rest just have a pinky lanyard to prevent dropping , it gets you negative points , when working at heights .

Besides the collection I install on draw queen kinves and oldies, my favorite of all is a smalk red para, loop through the keyring, overhand knot and burn the ends... from a friend no longer in this relm.....

As far as fire, I managed to put a small sliver of twine under the saw on the Huntsman to use with the dumb Firefly......

I know! Bought this chain at a hardware store. It's actually 1 meter long or so. Just cut it to size…
I can make a lot of chains now.

Aren't you worried about the chain damaging the scales? You can see it on the Wenger Skier, where the chain rubbed on the print.

I have it clipped to my pocket, SAK hangs down. It actually shouldn't touch the scales while in my pocket.

Wenger does have the wonderful split ring/chain which I do like.  It does scuff the scales tho I mostly dont mind.  On my Vic SAKs I use paracord or soft material so I don't unnecessarily scuff the scales.

@ Serena, look like a great set up.   :tu:

Since I discovered the pocket suspension clip I don't carry a Swiss army knife without one now. I prefer the cheap light ones because the metal is soft and is easier on your pocket. Also you can get them for dirt cheap so I went ahead and bought a bunch of them and put them on awl the SAKs in my rotation. I'm not really worried about scuffing because I don't carry the same knife enough days in a row for it to make a big difference, LOL. Also I don't mind a little bit of pocket wear from the knives that I use regularly.

Also prefer the P7. But try to buy that thing in The Netherlands…
Nearly impossible or it is ridiculously expensive.
That's why I ordered some cheap ones on Ali Express.

testing...testing...
got some Nitecore twist thingies!
Make great pinky lanyards too.
Double over a split ring and 3" turns into 1" - so get the next size, like 6 and its a bit better,
 interesting colors available...

I too have bought a bunch of those cheap pocket hangers. I really needed something for my SC and for a way to stop my keys from wearing holes in my pockets. I gave some away and the recipients seem to appreciate them. I've filed the sharp edges and opened the gap a little to prevent or at least slow down wear on pocket hems.

I have a large safety pin on my SC's split ring as well. Handy if you need to attach something to something, and wardrobe malfunctions like a cuff that's lost a button or a busted fly zipper.  :P

I have knife issues!

I have knife issues!

I have the same problem!

I try and then end up removing all sorts of things on my bigger SAKs.  The 2-3 layer SAKs dont get anything on them.

chain with clip tried and removed- check
S-biner tried and removed - check
paracord lanyard tried and removed - check

I currently have a paracord lanyard on one of them.  I'd thought about a ferro rod on another but haven't tried that out yet.

 :ahhh
