Title: "Never leave your Wingman"
Post by: TheDude on November 18, 2014, 12:53:11 PM
I finally succumbed to peer pressure and got an LM Wave. Not my first leatherman. No sir... Not by a long shot. But I was presently surprised I many respects. Well... I know you all like pics. So I will show you some skin first. Then we'll talk. How does that sound?

P.S. I feel so dirty. :o

No the most flattering angle. But here you go.

Pro's
Light weight
Pocket clip
Price

Con's
Not a real Phillips head
Main blade very thin
Scissors require tweaking before use

After all the horror stories I thought I better just buy one and see what I get. Worse that could happen is I have a few useful parts for some future mod work. Yes there is some quality work and in other respects a lack of. But I guess you have to cut corners somewhere. Its greatest asset is in many ways why I think so many people hate it. Its very light weight. Of cause this means thinner tools. As you can see when comparing the thickness of the main blade of a juice. But I don't mind the feel of it at all. I hardly noticed it in my pocket today. I really like the flathead blade too. Big enough for light prying work even. Package opener is a nice touch. Sadly the small driver/ruler/file (whatever) is a bit of a waste of time. Can opener. Sure why not. I hardly use them any more, but I guess I sure did with my original Wave. And as for the spring loaded pliers. Not bad. But I think the only thing you could cut with these is the cheese. I think I know what Gerber was trying to achieve with the Strata now. But I don't think they pulled it off any better than LM IMHO.

One of my most hated LM tools is the Wingman. I don't know where to start, the fact that because the wire cutters do not completely close or that smurfing excuse they call a file, heck they even went as far as to call it a ruler .

In my personal view or for my personal needs a Rebar weighs the same as a Wingman and packs way more bang for the buck.

Sorry for the rant but I will ashamedly admit, yes I also own one.

I'm a fan of my Sidekick, though definitely not without it's faults. The file really aggravates me, just make it cross cut and it would work fine! That's the only real complaint I have with it besides the lowered fit and finish. It's still put together just as solidly, though its just more crude overall. Not a showpiece, but certainly a solid tool. The pretend phillips, as much as I dislike the idea of it, it has worked quite well for me.

I don't cut wire, and when I do it's in the shop where I have the real tools to do so. They do like to rust though :-\

Nice to see a new member of the club!

I'm a fan of the Wingman and Sidekick as the best entry-level tools on the market. I think saying anything else would be   :bdh:

Agreed :tu:, and they make great gifts too.
