Title: Leatherman PST II – 0198 Date BRANDED W/ Sheath
Post by: MichaelJoseph01 on August 01, 2019, 11:04:40 PM
A nice piece for someone wanting to add to their collection.

Early 1998 model made right before they switched to tapered screw drivers. Has both L-shaped screwdrivers.
Later in 1998 they also started stamping “PST II” on the handle. This model precedes that change.

Both the sheath and the tool are branded United Electrical Controls.

Very good condition.

$60

Looks good, but forum policy is to list a price.

$150? Seems pretty dang steep to me.

This site was selling the same model for $73 - $133 depending on condition . https://smartknives.com/cart/1990s-knives/16004-75-leatherman-pst-ii-1998-ll.html (https://smartknives.com/cart/1990s-knives/16004-75-leatherman-pst-ii-1998-ll.html)
However, looks like they may have run out of stock. Item not available anymore.

Also, this is a promo Branded piece that comes with the original branded leather sheath in overall excellent shape. The branded pieces have seen greater interest from collectors and thus worth a bit more.

With that said... i'm not firm on that price... will change to best offer.

Thanks for the tip.

:iagree:

I have two early IIs. Both like-new condition with sheaths. Paid $29 for one and $39 for the other.
Only new-in-box examples usually fetch $100+(though there are exceptions like special editions). The branding doesn't help as much as much as one would think.

And the really good ones are first year 1996 versions and latest versions NIB.

Look around eBay if you don't believe me. But, make sure to check the box for "sold" listings. What people have them listed for unsold is irrelevant.

And there is a huge margin between "very good condition" and "brand new in box".

Edit:
Mint condition early 1996 PST II in my collection:

Its not about believing you, good for you if you got one that cheap. I'm sure you are a bargain shopper and find great deals. I have also seen them sell at the higher end, and I've seen many posts on the enthusiast forums from people commenting about the fact that the branded models in good condition are priced at the very top of the market.

For anyone actually interested, I'll take $85.

Smartknives is well known for takin the píss and selling pieces at inflated prices. Just take a look at his ebay listings.

It seems that branding text is bit worn out in that price id expect tool to be mint condition.

Let's try and keep comments about pricing out of the B&S as it tends to get ugly.

If it's priced too high it just won't sell    ;)

If you don't have any interest in purchasing..... move along.

Welcome to Mto !

Apologies, Steve. In my mind, it felt like I was helping to determine a more approachable sale price. The new $85 asking price seems about where it should be for some buyers.  :)

As a long term collector of PSTs I'll add my (hopefully helpful) comment about branded tools.

I find that unless a potential purchaser has a strong connection with the particular brand (eg crazy Apple enthusiasts) then in my experience branding tends to reduce the value of a PST, not increase it.

Of course there are exceptions eg The Zippo line of "advertising" (branded, often in striking colours) Fixxit tools usually fetch more than the plain Fixxits.

Good luck with your sale - this is a hard audience to please, and many MTo members have their own views on what a particular tool should sell for.  In the final analysis any object is worth whatever a buyer is prepared to pay.

Just seeing these replies.

After I listed it here I also listed it locally on CL and have since lowered the price to $65 and still haven't gotten a bite so I'm fully prepared to say that I overestimated the market for this.. That or I haven't gotten it in front of the right person.

Price corrected in original post as per request  good luck with the sale and welcome to  :MTO:

Also as said before, take the time to introduce yourself to the community and post a bit and people might be a little less apprehensive of dealing with someone they know a little bit about
