Title: Damn you Mike!
Post by: Benner on April 26, 2008, 07:43:01 PM
Yesterday was my day off and one thing I really like to do on my days off (Ok and every other day as well) is check out what Tim has for sale in his shop http://felinevet.sosakonline.com.  This is often a very dangerous move and to be honest I am lucky if I get out without spending any money.  Yesterday, I stumbled across this fine beauty;

Picture taken from Tim's site (hope you don't mind Tim!)

I have had a thing about these ever since I saw Terry's (NutSAK's) one here http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,3026.0.html as together with the great tool selection, I loved the stag scales (they aren't real stag) and thought that the gutting blade would act quite well as a belt cutter.  Although I was very interested in it, I kinda ruled it out as it was a little out of my price range.  Knowing Mike (micky d) was a huge SAK fan, I PM'd him with the picture of it saying how nice it was.  He then FORCED me into buying it and now I have one on the way even though I really can't afford it  >:(.  He has a real habit of doing that!

Damn you Mike!!  >:( :twak:

Ok so the ending may not be exactly true, but the rest is, honest!  :D

It's a cover for the saw.

Spending other peoples money is what i do best :D , I really should have been born a girl :D

On a serious not, 108mm are truly great Sak's and there about as big as you'd want to go for pocket carry (111/120mm are just too big in my opinion)

Welcome to the 108 appreciation society

Awesome SAK there, Benner - congrats on a really fine looking aquisition.

I'd be tempted to get one myself, but it has that cursed corkscrew instead of a useful Phillips driver!

So, I guess I'm safe from its allure even though it's still a beautiful SAK.

I used to feel the same about the phillips, but as I have never really got on with the back spring phillips and I am planning on EDCing it with a MT (very likely to be the swisstool X) I am not really fussed about it anymore.  Also, I find I don't use a phillips as much as I used to really.

That's a great SAK Ben. I wish I bought one when I had the chance.. The Safari Hunter and the ST X would make a great EDC. Mainly because its like having a Swisstool RS with a file..

I thought of you before I bought it as I knew you wanted one, but then I remembered that you went off it in favour of the Lumberjack and the OH Fireman, so then I bought it.  :D

Yup, I think the OH Fireman is my new favorite SAK. I also REALLY like my Victorinox WorkChamp.. It is another great SAK..

Well as long as you remember that I did do the decent thing first and consider the fact that you wanted one (even if it was for a very short time  :D).

I'm not that fond of mine, as it really is just a bit too wide, for my tastes :-\

I carry it in a belt sheath.. If I pocket carried it I would probably say the same thing as you..

Didn't you PE yours and shorten the blade slightly?

Yep I purged the serrations, as I do with all my knives >:D, and shortend the blade to 76mm :)

You didn't get two? I mean, why would you want to risk messing up such a fine, fine specimen by actually using it? Or worse losing it, or loaning it out to Mike (mickyd) who probably had this all planned to start with. Now if you had two of them you could use one without a care in the world. Muwahahahaha!

You're right, I am a tightwad.  :D  Besides, even if I did want to get 2 of them, finding a second one would not be such an easy task.

Ben, you're gonna love that Safari Hunter!  I have one with the serrated edge on the gutting blade, and one with a plain edge.  I like the serrated one much better--it just makes more sense for that blade, and the knife more versatile as a whole.  I hope you like those faux stag scales better than I did.  ::)

Will this be your first 108mm SAK?

It will be yes.   :)  The serrated blade was the deal breaker for me, I don't think I would have been as interested if it was a PE.

My wallet hopes not.  :D  This will actually be the most I have ever spent on a SAK.

I plan on carrying it with my Swisstool as I think it will make a great combo.

That SAK looks in mighty fine nick, is it new?  You're not gonna have it as a show item then, its going straight into EDC is it.

I totally agree.  Mine was just a collector's piece until I started carrying a multi.  Now I pair it with my spirit when I'm camping.

If it's any consolation, the Safari Hunter is typically the second most expensive 108mm, below the Mauser.  I prefer it to the Mauser, actually.  The Hunter may not be as collectible, but I think it's the most capable of the two three-layer 108mm SAKs.

Everyone needs a GAK or Trooper, and the Solo is an excellent, lightweight knife for food prep. :pok:

It will be carried yes.  :)  Although it would be nice to keep it as it is, it's never going to be worth a fortune and it would be a real shame to make it a drawer queen when the tool selection is as great as it is.  :)

I bought my Safari Hunter so I could retire my Mauser, and I agree it is a better allround knife, the clip point on the Mauser is just a bit too fragile for my tastes :-\

Well the Stag Hunter has arrived!  :)  It only took a week to reach me here in the UK and is yet another example of Tim's fantastic service.  Many thanks Tim!  :)

It is gorgeous!   I am glad I went for the Stag effect scales as I think they really set the knife off.

I will be sure to take some pictures later for you all to see.  ;)

Ok, here are the pics as promised of the Safari Stag Hunter.  I am so impressed with this SAK.  It is my first 108mm and I can understand why so many rave about them.  The overall feel is extremely solid and the snap on the blades is incredibly strong, much stronger than that of a regular 91mm SAK.  I am very pleased with it.  :)

It looks a nice size and has a decent set of tools in it :) but meh those scales really don't do it for me. Do they have them in normal scales?

You can get them in red nylon scales as well as the Stag.

There is a hole for a lanyard yes.  It's not a hollow rivet though, more just a hole drilled through the backsprings and the scales.

You need to get a nice rawhide leather lanyard for it then. 8)

Although a leather lanyard of some sort would look real nice, I still can't get on with lanyards on anything. :-\  They just dangle in the way for me.

Well that Stag Hunter is just begging for one man. You may have to consider giving lanyards another go.  :pok: :)

What, just because that SAK deserves one.  :D

I have tried them many times and I just can't get on with them.  I know for reasons such as visability they are a great help, but for actual use I just find them a pain in the butt.

I hear you man. For me a lanyard is okay on a knife, but I can't stand using a multitool with a lanyard on it.  :-\
