Title: The (Unofficial) 30 Day Clutch/Mechanical Pencil Rotation Challenge
Post by: Rapidray on October 29, 2018, 01:08:35 AM
I will be doing a 30 Day Clutch - Mechanical Pencil Rotation Challenge. Just for personal satisfaction right now.

The rules -
1. Must use one SAK thru out the 30 days. Hint - If you are doing another SAK challenge, this is the perfect time to do this one. Which brings us to rule 2...
2. Must start a thread on this challenge.
3. Must use a different clutch, lead holder, or mechanical pencil everyday.
4. Any size lead may be used from .02mm to 5.6mm...you get the ideal.
5. Photo’s of the SAK and pencil together.
6. Sorry, no wood pencils.
7. Now if pens are needed for work, that is understandable.

I will be starting my Challenge on November 1st and will be using my SAK on the 30 Day Huntsman Challenge, and using this thread to start it off.
Moderators please feel free to advise me with any help and thanks!
See you on the 1st.

Day 0
The Huntsman and one of my favorite Caran d’Ache - a 2mm Mario Botta. 2mm graphite is my favorite size as it is what I used in school and then into mechanical drafting. It has always been with me. Now, Frank Lloyd Wright was my favorite architect for many decades untill I saw the buildings Mario Botta has designed and built. One element of his design process is to see where the building is going to be and then he designs so that it will blend in with the surrounding area.
When this one became available from CdA and was designed by Mario Botta himself, I had to have it!

Not a problem...I have heard his newest building is going to be in China! That should be interesting.

Day 1
The Huntsman and the Caran d’Ache Ivanhoe. It is a 0.7mm mechanical pencil. This is the one that got me started into CdA writing stuff. Fell in love with the chain mall design of it. It is a heavy weight compared to others but I also like the weight in my hand while writing. This will drag a shirt pocket down, so it is better suited to desk writing.

Day 2
The Huntsman and the Caran d’Ache Venetian mechanical pencil, which takes a 0.5mm graphite. This is the thinnest I can go down to and even then I sometimes will break the graphite. I don’t have the breaking problem with 0.7mm and larger. This also comes in a .925 sterling silver edition which I never seem to have the money when they pop up for sale. What caught my attention on this one was the design. It looks like sculpted wood to me. And I found it at a excellent price. I still get a little nervous when I hear sirens...

Day 3
The Huntsman and the Caran d’Ache Leman black lacquered gold trimmed mechanical pencil. This is what you would call a fake out...it looks like the regular plastic pencils you can pick up at a lot of places. The second you pick it up, you know something is wrong. With it’s brass body its a heavy weight. The black lacquered finish is really deep. You are holding a quality made instrument. It is what you can expect to get from CdA. When you get done holding and looking it over, you will never look at the regular bodied ones again.

Day 4
The Huntsman and the SKILCRAFT U.S. Goverment mechanical pencil. This company has a very interesting history. SKILCRAFT is the registered name for the National Industries for the Blind - also known as NIB. President Roosevelt signed into law a bill that allowed the goverment to buy stuff made by blind people. Think this was in the late 30’s. They made janitorial supplies in the beginning. It wasn’t untill 1967 when another manufacturer of the pens made 13 million defective ballpoint pens and SKILCRAFT stepped in and have been making them since. Raised in a military family, these pens and pencils were always in the house. These pencils were my first introduction to a mechanical pencil, untill becoming aquatinted with the clutch pencils. This one a Smokey grey translucent pencil. It is in the 1.15mm graphite size.

Oh I know I have forgotten a lot...I think it had to write for a mile or X-amount of pages, which Caran d’Ache says theirs will go thousands of pages. They had temperature requirements also...think it had to work in extremely cold weather and very hot weather. You know the military!
Thanks!

You made me google...
The ISS orbits the Earth every 90 min.
It also spins 4 degrees per min, or 360 degrees per 90 min, so the same side always faces the earth, like the moon does.

I imagine they do that so the solar panels always face away from earth, in the direction the sun tends to be visible from.

Sorry! Yes, there used to be a program that NASA has to track the ISS and you type in your location and it will tell you when you can see it in the night sky...sometimes you can get a 3 minute window and its like a shooting star at night but way slower.

Day 5
The Huntsman and the Caran d’Ache Ecridor in 1.15mm graphite. Now the Ecridor line, IIFC, is their flagship line. This model I believe is from the 60’s. What I liked on this was the graphite size is the same as the U.S. Military from yesterdays carry. The other thing that caught my attention on this one was it is 0.800 sterling silver. It is my first silver pencil. I do have another...but that one is planned for Thanksgiving day, you will see/understand why then. Carry’s very well in the shirt pocket and fun to use.

Day 6
The Huntsman and the Caran d’Ache Fixpencil 3. The Fixpencil 3 is a metal bodied 3mm graphite pencil. This one is a clutch pencil and a writer and great artist pencil. Because it will take a great point I can still use it for writing and makes a great drawing pencil. While it is one of my newer buys, I wish I had bought one sooner. It is a little bit longer and that makes it balance out nice in my hand. Because this pulls double duty, it is a winner!

Day 7
The Huntsman and the Rotring Rapid Pro 2.0mm. Rotring is a German company, originally, that is made in Japan, and is now owned by Newell Brands here in the United States. Some of the older German made Rotring bring some big money on the used market. This one is a fix pencil design where you depress the cap and only a small amount of graphite come out. All the Rotring will have the red ring some where on the writing instruments. Rotring means red ring. These are well made pencils.

Day 8
The Huntsman and the Rotring 800+. Now this is a 0.5mm graphite, twist action top which will extend and retract the graphite. The plus, which is the +, is the styles on the pencil. I used the 800+ for over 2 years every day at work. It would get used daily and is the one that I handed to the customers to sign the work completed order on the IPad. Talk about a conversation starter, this is one that will do it. I even had one take it to the computer, asked where I got it, went there and ordered one.
I wished it was in a 2mm and if they ever do, I will get one. Since I have retired, so has this one.

Day 9
The Huntsman and the L. & C. Hardtmuth model 48. Now this is a very old company. 1790’s when it first started. This one is both wood and metal. This model is even earlier than the common mechanical and clutch pencils. To adjust the graphite on these, you have to unscrew the front and adjust the graphite to the length you want and then screw it down. With the 5.6mm graphite this is more for the artist. I believe this model, because it is from the USA places it later in the 1950’s.
I actually bought this one from a seller in Russia. I would love to know how it on earth did it wind up over there! The box it came in definitely took all the beating and protected this model from damage.

What I like about them the most is they never change...a wooden pencil you sharpen and it gets shorter. Then you have to add a pencil holder to bring it back to a longer length to use. With the mechanical and clutch pencils it will always stay the same untill you use up all the graphite. They will last you a life time and then get handled down to family.

You also can change the to different degrees of graphite. There is like 10 or so different hardness available for the artist and then different colors! But the coolest is the watercolor ones....do your drawing and then take your brush with water and it changes to watercolor.

Day 11
The Huntsman and the L. & C. Hardtmuth Koh-I-Noor model 1504. This is a 2mm clutch pencil that is double ended. You can have different harness graphite and they are marked so that you know to some degree what you have. I like to keep the same at both ends and always have a sharp graphite ready. When you are on a roll and drafting something, you don’t want to have to stop and sharpen graphite. Due to space, you have shorter graphite and not the full length you would normally have. This is the only double ended type I have.

Day 12
The Huntsman and the Spoke Design model 4. This is a custom made mechanical pencil. The owner of the company is Brain Conti. He takes the Sharp 200/205 guts and puts them into his bodies that he turns himself. He can make them from aluminum, titanium, stainless steel, or brass. You can choose the color you want on some of the models, red, blue or black. He is currently doing model 5 which is on my list next. These can be had in the 0.5mm, 0.7mm or in the 0.9mm graphite. It comes in a plastic tube and the white styrofoam??package that has the stand, refills and extra erasers. This one is a tad light so next one will be on the heavier side. I wish he would make these in the 2mm but I’m not going to hold my breath. These are well made and with the proven longevity on the Sharp guts, these will last a life time.
There are other custom mechanical pencil makers out there making some good stuff, but Brain’s stuff is very affordable. With the options he offers for you, you may wind up buying 2 of the same model just in different materials.
The only negative I can give this is no clip...so it rolls sometimes when you lay it down. So you do need to be careful there.

Day 13
The Huntsman and the E+M Workman Long Clutch pencil. This is another 5.6mm graphite pencil. Made in Germany since 1899, they were the largest nib pen holders manufacturer. The E+M is from the owners last names, Konrad Ehmann and Wolfram Mummler, who is the 4th generation of the family. Made of wood and metal, these are very affordable at under $15.00. And fat...this is like “your first pencil” fat. It is still a very nice artist clutch pencil. It is my favorite wooden 5.6mm that I have.
The last photo is a size comparison of the 2mm and the 5.6mm.

Day 14
The Huntsman and the Caran d’Ache No. 77. This is a 2mm graphite clutch pencil. The reason for buying this one, which was in 2mm and that would have been reason enough, is the 3 fish. CdA used the 3 fish as a way of saying this is the best of the best. You could buy it and know you were getting the best product they could make. They do not do it know because it is the best and they no longer have to show it. It does make a great piece of their history. So it is a bonus to get one of these.

Day 15
The Huntsman and the Uni Kuru Toga. This is in the 0.5mm graphite and very unique. Unique in that under the hood, ie the body, is an engine! A rotary engine. How it works is in the photo. It is a new design that some of the manufacturing companies are doing to make them better. This rotary mechanizing engine is Uni’s. Another company is doing a design to where the inside will bend a little so you don’t break the graphite. Always building a better mouse trap.

Day 16
The Huntsman and the Pilot G-2 graphite mechanical pencil in 0.7mm. These are very affordable pencils. So affordable if you lose it you will not be beating your self up over it. It is also one where other people may like it more than you do. When I see that look, I ask them and if they say yes, I just give it to them. Did I mention they were affordable? They come in a pack of two for around 4 dollars or so depending where you get them. I like the transparency of them. Something about the smokey gray look is nice. The cushion where you grip makes for positive hold when you are outside and it’s humid.

Day 17
The Huntsman and the Cross. Another old company that makes some great writing instruments. This one is a 0.9mm graphite. It has been retired for years. It is an office type writer as outside in the open it is just to slippery. Maybe a different finish would have gotten more use out of it. It just doesn’t yell at me like my other ones do.

Not a problem...I would recommend the 5.6mm especially if you like to draw or into art. I have also noticed that kids still in school like these way better than the 2mm. I think it’s because of the size. I will be doing a 5.6mm tomorrow that is very unique!

Day 18
The Huntsman and the KOH-I-NOOR HARDTMUTH 5340. This is a 5.6mm graphite clutch pencil. This pencil body has a special color selection on it of different colors. It’s a good thing photos are worth a thousand words because I would be using them all. It also makes this clutch pencil stand out so when you see it you know what graphite you are going to be inside it. With this color graphite the more you move it the more colors it will lay down. They have named this graphite “Magic”, probably because in the beginning you never know what color you will get. It does make for some very interesting art work. At the end of the day, if you don’t like the “Magic” you can dump it out and put you favorite in and still have a cool looking art pencil.

Day 19
The Huntsman and the Caran d’Ache Museum Fixpencil 44. This is a 3.8mm graphite pencil. This is one of my top 5 pencils and for art work the king, bar none. I love this one alot. I just couldn’t have one, or a second as a backup, I have 5 of them. This one does it all. It will take a excellent point and the size falls in between the 2mm and the 5.6mm. You can still put done a lot of shading or make a thin line.
If you are into watercolor...this is it hands down. Draw it and then you can paint it. The graphite will turn into watercolor when you put a wet brush to it. The less water the darker the color, and the more water the lighter the color. Now you only need three primary lead colors to get you the secondary colors and from them different shades of color. For this reason, CdA will give you the three primary colors and a graphite for a total of four with the pencil. With the Museum series, you get 18 different colors.
Another reason it is so high on my list is it’s length. It is 6 inches long in body. My CdA Mario Botta is right at 5 inches body length. That extra length means I can open my hand and move paper around and the pencil will not move. Anything smaller will fall, so I have to lay it down on the desk.
Well enough talk...

Day 20
The Huntsman and the Caran d’Ache Ecridor Chevron artist set. This is a 2mm clutch pencil that CdA put out for the artist. The tube of colored graphite’s is also watercolors when a wet brush is applied. Like the CdA Museum 44 from yesterday, it’s the same thing, just about 1/2 the size in graphite diameter. The difference in the bodies is where you need to decide which one you are taking. Because of the metal body of the Chevron, it is better used indoors. It gets a tad slippery outside in the heat. The Museum 44 has a better suited finish on it and is better outdoors.
The artist set comes with a glass top, wooden case with the clutch pencil, tube of colored graphite’s and the eraser. And yes, I have two sets. This one was going to be a Christmas gift to my son, but he doesn’t like metal bodies. He loves wood. So I got him a different set of wooden pencils.
The thing about the Ecridor series is it’s the same body style, just a different design on the outside. Just like the SAK!  The Chevron has the arrows on it. The Ecridor design hasn’t changed in over 50 years or more.  :tu:

No, it is for laying out wall lines to lay either block, brick, rock or cut stone on  Sometimes chalk lines will get washed away or worn off before we have time to get to a wall but if you lay a straight edge down and score the mark then it isn't going anywhere :tu: I use the pencils for marking our corner poles with brick spacing marks and for several other tasks in my job and the 2mm lead holds up very well for this :tu:

Oh ok, I see now.
Yes it does, when I would get my readings for the RTU’s, (roof top units), I would write them down on the units and 3 months later when I would recheck the units, I could compare the reading and see what the differences were and know if something is up...graphite will last up to a year on the units thru rain, heat, whatever Mother Nature wants to throw at it.  :tu:

It holds up very well, if another tech does the maintenance, they also see the reading and I have gotten calls on that subject! Now ink from pens, will not last at all against Mother Nature.

Day 21
The Huntsman and the Caran d’Ache 80th Anniversary set. Today is Thanksgiving Day, it is also my favorite day of the year. I thought it would be nice to share with you my favorite 2mm clutch pencil...which came in set with a matching pen. This is .925 stealing silver so it has some weight which I also like. The bonus was it came in 2mm. Unique design was another. CdA knows how to take a flagship item and make it interesting again. Just like SAK.  :tu:
Comes in a special outer box which holds, a believe, a walnut box??? Which you see here. They didn’t hold back on this set. Workmanship is excellent on everything, as you would expect from CdA. They are also serial numbered and only 800 of the 80th Anniversary sets were made.

I would definitely only use that set
at home especially being real silver  :tu:
Excellent collection Rapidray

Day 22
The Huntsman and the Caran d’Ache Type 55 mechanical pencil. This is a 0.7mm graphite pencil. It is an Ecridor series with a different design on the body. These type of body design changes is what keeps the Ecridor series fresh. Another exciting thing is if the pencils are not your thing, they make the bodies available in pen, rollerball, and fountain pen. They went the extra mile on the Type 55 and made a 4th model...a 2mm clutch pencil. Even though this is a newer model, I have not been able to find, see, or even hear of one for sale. The Type 55 2mm has become my Holy Grail clutch pencil. Photos of it are ok, but I sure would like to have one!
The design of the Type 55 is from the Mustang gills on the car. They even had a die cast model of the Mustang as part of there store advertising for the line. The car is a must have to complete the “cool” factor. It is a nice looking die cast model, which isn’t surprising if CdA has a any part of it.

That is true! I used to be really comfortable with the 0.5mm but in the last 4 years or so, I have started to break the graphite a little to often. I now use the 0.7mm and have had no problems at all. No breaks, just a lot of fun. What I have found, for me, is ...
0.5mm - 1.1mm is great for writing
2mm - 4mm is borderline writing and art work
5.6mm and up is great for art work

Day 23
The Huntsman and the Caran d’Ache Retro mechanical pencil. This is a 0.7mm graphite pencil. The design on this one is unique as the look depends on how the light is hitting it. It can look like regular checkering or triangles running down the body. It is one of those things hard to capture on a photo but way easier to see in person. The top of the cap is in red and only the second red top cap that I have. Another thing that is different is they put the information on the clip and not the cap where is usually is. It is another of their Ecridor models.

I understand that. Pens are ok and I like them, but a rollerball pen will end up quicker in my collection. Used to love fountain pens but clutch and mechanical pencils are always first with me. I might have 5 fountain pens and only one is a CdA. The other two are Lamy and two Pilot.

Mechanical drafting is where I fell in love with clutch pencils. You could take all the other stuff away - even mechanical pencils, but the line gets drawn at my clutch pencils.
I would have to do a John Wick with one of my Blackwing pencils.

Day 24
The Huntsman and the Koh-I-Noor model 48. This is my first 5.6mm graphite clutch pencil. It is a plastic orange color triangle shaped pencil. Because of its shape it is nice in the hand and the tapered body has the weight in the front. Because of the shape, when you lay this one down, it will not roll anywhere, which is the main reason I used it to write my readings on the top of the units when I did my maintenances. When I retired, a co-worker had asked about the pencil, so I gifted it to him. It makes for a great first time purchase or gift for the artist. I have had this one for over 25 years. I picked up 2 of them at the same time because they were on sale from a store going out of business. It is still made today.

The one I mentioned above is a Staedtler but the writing has worn off now but I remember it was the only brand I could find at the time anywhere in store :salute: now with internet shopping the sky is the limit :ahhh

Day 25
The Huntsman and the Koch-I-Noor Versatil-soft 5353 5.6mm graphite clutch pencil. Now this one is short. A little to short for my taste. It makes up in that it is easy to carry in the pocket. The body is a soft, rubber like material in a matt black finish. You can also get this in a kit with 5 colored graphite’s. It also has a built in sharpener in the cap that unscrews. A lot of them have that feature. Something I have forgotten to mention before, sorry!
A lot of the features make up for it being on the short side, making it still useful and more so outside! Especially during the summertime, really nice!

Yes Staedtler is one you can find at Office Max and Staples with no problem. They are very nice 2mm pencils. This style is what I used in high school for basic mechanical drafting.

It is always handy to have a sharpener built in but I always carry a separate one with an eraser  They sharpener faster and keep the shavings in there so no mess and when I make a mistake I can erase it :D :like:

I am the same way as I would rather have a sharpener and not have to take the pencil cap off. Some caps pull off and some unscrew. Then you do have them with no built in sharpeners. Just way easier to having a separate one.

Day 26
The Huntsman and the Koh-I-Noor 5311. Since small and pocket is favored here is one for today and another for tomorrow. It is heavy clutch pencil in 5.6mm. The clip is what drew it to me. Totally different, interesting and very strong. The pencil will sit very low in your shirt pocket because of how high the clip sits. Yesterdays model 5353 is 109mm in length and is the shortest clutch pencil they make. This one comes in at 120mm, still short enough. It does have a built in sharpener in the cap. The long flutes in the body also make for an interesting look.

Day 27
The Huntsman and the Koh-I-Noor 5321. Another short 5.6mm clutch pencil. The black and gold is what caught my attention to this one. The clip design, like the 5311, was a nice touch on it. This has a very unique body design on it, with a different type shape I hadn’t seen before. Kinda reminds me of a short, fat cigar. Topedo style, I think is what they call it? In real life, I don’t use this one at all. Once or twice, and hasn’t see any more use. The main reason is the clip. It sits way to low. To much sits above the shirt pocket and moves to much from the weight that is above the shirt pocket. Pick something up off the floor or ground and other items in your pocket will fall out. It is a heavy pencil. And I like heavy as I have said in other posts, but this one is 1.83 ozs or 52.1 grams. My Ivanhoe comes in at 1.42 ozs or 40.2 grams.

Day 28
The Huntsman and the Cretacolor Ecologic 430 12. This is another 5.6mm clutch pencil with a wooden body and made in Austria. They are very nice clutch pencils. The design of this body allows you to grip very close to the front making a familiar grip all the time. With the middle finger resting on the inside of the grove it is even comfortable. With a wooden body it is popular with those who prefer wooden to metal bodies. My son is in the wood camp. He says it feels warm and metal is cold. I can see his point, and he is right. With me if it holds graphite, I will pretty much like it.
Thought you might enjoy seeing what I do carry my stuff in. I finally settled in with a case I found at our supply house in Atlanta before I retired. It is a Klein Tools case for meters or whatever you want. Needless to say, its not work tools! It is just big enough to carry everything you need except large paper. I like my Moleskine notebooks. So everything fits inside.

Yes they are very comfortable and a size that fits all hands - young and adult.
Yes, definitely for art. Any 5.6mm graphite will do...even the Magic graphite. That’s what is so great about clutch pencils. You find one you really like, you can use any graphite hardness or color you want in it.
I have a piece of spalted maple that I will be turning into a clutch pencil in the near future. And if it turn out really good, giving it to my son.  :tu:

Day 29 + 0 = 30
Yes I planned that...
The Huntsman and the Staedtler Mars 780. This is your basic mechanical drafting pencil. This is the type that I used in school and the clutch pencil has been with me since. It is a 2mm graphite pencil. It is kinda sad that CAD has taken over. We are always improving the tools we use and many times it is a good thing. The calculator replaced the slide rule. GPS has replaced the compass. It may not be the new but there is never any thing wrong with the old.
Staedtler is another very old company. 1850’s till now and still going strong today. The pencil sharpener for the drafting pencils has always been cool. The metal desk top ones are the best but these small compact plastic ones are just as good. The lettering guide is a tool that is nice in that you can set it for the size of the lettering. From one position you can have one to several lines.

Last day...
The Huntsman and 2 different clutch holders for pastels! These are the Koh-I-Noor model 5343 and the Caran d’Ache Fixpencil 0012. These clutch holders will take bigger diameter size art supply material. Mainly pastels. This material is very messy to handle because it is so soft. These holders will help keep your hands clean but the biggest plus is the size will always be the same as you work. You can use the very last part of the color and not have to pinch that last little bit with your fingers! Messy! Another art material you can use is charcoal, another very soft messy medium.
The Koh-I-Noor is completely round while the CdA has some flats in the body and will not roll when you lay it down. The are so close in length it isn’t worth mentioning. The Koh-I-Noor has a tad bit bigger diameter over the CdA. The smaller diameter and flats on the CdA body feel better in my hand.
Poncho65 has given me a link to a section on mechanical pencils, thank you  :tu: so I will be posting there in the future.
Wspeed...thank you for suggesting this Challenge. It was a great ideal and a nice way to share with everyone my other passion in life!  :hatsoff:

This set has 25 different colors...the great thing is this set was right at $6.00 but they do go way higher, better material in the pastels and quantity will go up!

Well, here is another one for you to think about...another option...and nice one.
The Rotring 1305. It is a 2mm clutch pencil. This one is interesting in that you can change the amount of graphite that come out. It is adjustable. You also get a set of graphite indicators that you can set to the hardness you are using. The front silver design is cut with flats so it will lay flat and not roll around. The body is tapered and gets thinner towards the end.

Hardtmuth Koh-I-Noor 1511 2mm graphite pencil. If you remember my double ended pencil, here is the more common normal looking one. This one also a 2mm graphite that unscrews to loosen the grip on the graphite and then you adjust it and screw it back to tighten. It does have a wooden body on it. The end caps came in different colors so you could set up your own system of knowing what hardness graphite is in the pencil. I have it set up for tan color cap is for hard graphite because it write light and green has the softer graphite because it writes darker.
While I love clutch pencils first and foremost, these being the “grandfather” and slower to use, have the neat factor going for them!
